The Triple Crown
Every sport has their ultimate title. In the Duel of Magic, casters strive to win the Archmage Tournament of challenge to be granted the right to challenge the Archmage. Only through a successful challenge can a magic user be bestowed the ultimate title of Archmage.
In the Duel of Fists, a brawler must survive against countless others in the ultimate tournament, the Diamond Quest. The winner of the DQ retains the highest ranking in the Duel of Fists, the Diamond, for one entire cycle.
In the Duel of Swords, a duelist may become the Overlord by directly challenging the current holder of the title. This challenge may only be done from a Warlord or a Baron rank.
Throughout the history of the dueling community, there have only been a select few who have defied all odds and achieved these paramount ranks in all three sports.
Condextint "Dexter" Montoya ♦ April 2nd, 1999
The first to accomplish this feat was Condextint "Dexter" Montoya. Dexter was the fifteenth Diamond of the Outback. He was also the 31st Overlord of the Duel of Swords. Dexter earned the Overlord title by defeating the same man who had defeated Eros (who would be the 2nd duelist to claim this honor). Dexter reigned from April 2nd, 1999 until May 10th, 1999. Dexter became DoM's Archmage on September 14, 1997. Tragically, Dexter lost his life on January 4th, 2000 by an assailant who to this day remains unknown.
Eros Hunrai Marzanhe DeBurgo ♦ May 3rd, 1999
Following Dex, Eros Hunrai Marzanhe DeBurgo was the second duelist to claim the Triple Crown. Eros was the tenth Diamond in the Duel of Fists. He was also the twenty-ninth Overlord of the Duel of Swords. It was a title he earned by defeating the greatest Overlord in Duel of Swords history, Dalamar Ar'Daumon. Eros retained the title of Overlord from January 29th, 1999 until March 19th, 1999. Eros also became the Duel of Magic's Archmage on May 3rd, 1999.
Avery Shivblade ♦ May 29th, 2000
Avery Shiv Blade earned his place among the Triple Crown winners shortly after. Avery was the Eighteenth and Twenty-first Diamond of the Outback. He was also the thirty-eighth Overlord of the Duel of Swords. He held that rank from October 13th, 1999 until May 29th, 2000. Avery was declared the Archmage of Twighlight Island on March 6th, 2000. When Avery was victorious in the eighteenth Diamond Quest, he became the first (and so far only) to hold the titles of Archmage, Overlord, and Diamond at the same time. In view of this accomplishment, Avery dubbed himself the "Diarchlord."
Cassius Gaius Maximius ♦ January 23rd, 2005
The Fourth member of the Triple Crown club was Cassius Gaius Maximius. Cass's first primary title was Archmage of Twilight Isle, defeating Syous of Mystara for the title on January 5, 2000. His reign only lasted a cycle, and ironically involved two other Triple Crown Winners: Shortly after acceding to the title, he was called upon as the reigning Archmage to give the eulogy for Dexter Montoya at his funeral on Twilight Isle, and he lost the titles at the end of the cycle to Avery Shiv Blade..topping off the irony, it was this win that secured the Triple Crown for Shiv Blade. He won the Overlordship by defeating Goon on May 16, 2003, first defeating a TDL duelist and Commoner of the Arena named "Bubbles" in a Test of Worthiness. He was the fourtieth Diamond of the Duel of Fists: While as of this writing he has not been Overlord or Archmage since his reigns ended, he was the fifty-fifth and fifty-sixth Diamond as well.
Bran Bale ♦ November 24th, 2008
The Fifth member of the Triple Crown club was The Lizardman, Bran Bale. Bran Bale was the fifty-fourth Diamond of the Duel of Fists, winning the Diamond Quest on July 20, 2008. He became Overlord of the Duel of Swords on November 12, 2008 by winning a special Tournament of Barons which also included former Overlord Xeric Mues, a Warlord at the time; he defeated Aya Hayashibara to win the tournament. He lost the mantle on November 23, 2008....24 hours later, he defeated Vincent Smith to become Archmage of the Duel of Magic and complete the Triple Crown.
Harris D'Artainian ♦ February 3rd, 2011
The sixth member to join the Triple Crown club was Harris D'Artainian. The first title Harris
earned on his way to joining was the Diamond, having won DQ XXXIII on April 12th, 2003.
Exactly four years later on April 12th, 2007 Harris became the 72nd Overlord of the Duel of
Swords by defeating Anjolie Quinn. He held the mantle until June 7th of that same year, when
he was defeated by Cletus Ganderfald in three matches. Unlike most that ascend to the title
of ArchMage through the ArchMage Tournament Harris managed to bypass the tournament entirely
and issue direct challenge to then ArchMage Xanth van Bokkelen, by virtue of his having fallen
below 20 wins over losses, which opened him to challenge by those ranked at Mage.
Harris defeated Xanth on February 3rd, 2011 in a best of three match, winning the first two
duels to cap off a lengthy dueling career with the Triple Crown.
Mur Ollavan became the seventh to achieve the triple crown. A journey that began on the Isle
when he became the 28th ArchMage on January 4th, 2005. Mur took the title from Xerzes and defended
it once against Marzan before giving it up in May of 2005 to Vincent Smith. His next top title
waited nearly six years until April 17th, 2011 when he became the 65th Diamond in the Outback.
The capping title didn't take nearly so long and, in fact, Mur became a rare dual title holder
when on May 23rd, 2011 he cashed in his challenge right from finishing first in the cycle
warlord tournament and used it to defeat Aya Hayashibara in single match format to become the
87th Overlord of the Duel of Swords.
Claire Farron ♦ January 15th, 2017
Number 8 on the Triple Crown list was claimed by Claire Farron. Claire claimed her first of the major
titles on October 18th, 2013 when she defeated Xanth in two duels to becom the 53rd Archmage, just
one day after having defended the Tower of Water. Next up was the Overlordship, not once but twice.
She defeated Kimone Kidd on March 27th, 2015 to claim the 101st crown 5-3. She would ascend to the
Overlord title once more a year and a half later, defeating Dimitrii Sixtus to become the 109th. Three
years and some change after that Archmage win, Claire went into Diamond Quest LXXXVIII amongst a field
of 10 fighters and went undefeated from start to end. A nice bit of synergy as the 88th Diamond title
earns her the 8th spot on this esteemed list.
Gren Blockman ♦ December 21st, 2018
Gren became the 9th to achieve the triple crown in December of 2018, after defeating Eden Parker
to become the Archmage. Roughly 3 weeks later, Gren would win Diamond Quest XCVI, giving him 2 of the
3 major titles (this was Gren's 4th stint as Diamond, the first having been in April of 2013). With
the two time gated titles in hand, Gren issued challenge to Matt Simon for the Overlord title in
hopes of becoming only the 2nd ever to be crowned Diarchlord. Unfortunately this was not to be, as
Matt forced Gren through the Test of Worthiness and he was found wanting by the blade of Baron
Mallory Maeda. Never-the-less, even without gaining all 3 concurrently, Gren had been the 97th
Overlord in August of 2014 so the Archmage titled locked in his triple crown status.
Lilith Anderson ♦ May 14th, 2020
Lilith became the 10th holder of the triple crown after an avalanche of success in the Arena. Having
joined that year's madness tournament as a Master-at-Arms and seeded #15 in her division, she
went on to trounce her competitors and emerge as Champion! With the prize of a test free shot at
the Overlord's crown, Lilith challenge Jewell Ravenlock and won 2 of 3 to earn the mantel and seal
her position in this list! In 2017/18 Lilith had an incredible Diamond win streak in the Outback when
she won 4 consecutive DQ's (XCI - XCIV) to become the first fighter to hold that title for a full
year! Her first title success had come on the Isle back in July of 2016 when she defeated Rachael
(in the same cycle she had earned the rank of Mage, mind you) to become Archmage.
