The 126th Overlord

Reign

As winner of the 2022 Fall All Ranks Tournament, Reign chose the Intercession Free Overlord Challenge as her prize. To become the next Overlord, all she would have to do is defeat only the second DiArchLord in history. Gatito opted for a single duel to decide the title. Reign began cautiously, defending high against Gatito's opening thrust. Though it was only a half point lead, she would never relinquish it. The next round saw a trade of blows before Reign opened up a wider lead with a sidestep against Gatito's thrust. Gatito later was able to bring the match closer with a direct defense of a thrust, and at 2.5-2 it was anyone's duel. But tonight was Reign's night, and after another trade, Reign went defensive in the next two rounds with a sidestep and then secured her victory with a low defense to dethrone Gatito and become the newest Overlord. This also ended the reign of the second DiArchLord.

Reign's first challenge came from Renegade Baron of Dockside Mira Burke, who has had her eye on the title for a while and decided it was a good time to take a shot at it. The two met, and instead of any sort of tests or intercessions, settled the matter in a best of three series. In a strange twist, Reign ended up winning both matches by the same score and in the same amount of rounds: 5 - 2 in 8 rounds. After the match, Mira petitioned for Loyalty and Reign accepted, thus taking a target off of her back.

Reign was offered her first opportunity to defend her title when Mairead Harker placed third in the Winter Cycle All Ranks' Tournament and walked away with the OL test-free challenge right. The Overlord opted for a best-of-three, but she only needed two fights to retain her title. Over the course of the challenge, she allowed young Harker only three points across the two matches. The matches' final scores were 5-2 in 10 and 5-1 in 7. An impressive first defense.

As the 2023 Madness Winner, Ettyn de la Rose earned herself a test-free challenge at the Overlord, and not only that, but was also able to choose the format of the duel, which was a single match. Reign opened up a 3-0 lead, and while Ettyn was able to score a couple of points to close the gap, but would never come any closer. The Overlord took control of the match again, and though it took 12 rounds, she secured her title with a 5-3 victory.

Reign waived her grace period for her next challenger, the veteran Warlord Lupton est Dracoern. Lupton had made a recent return to the rings and after climbing the standings to be the current active duelst with the most wins over losses, decided to see if he could prove himself the supreme duelist by winning Overlord. There was also more drama, as apparently this challenge also came due to a kidnapping by Lupton's son, who had deposed him of Emperor, and taken his current lover Jewell Ravenlock. Reign chose a best of three to allow Lupton the chance to prove himself, and the first match was closely contested as Lupton was at match point with a 4-3 lead, but Reign scored the final two points to win 5-3.

The second match was one for the ages, as Reign took a commanding 4-2 lead after 7 rounds... but this was only the beginning. Lupton battled back to take a 4.5-4 lead in the 10th round and from there the two began a long battle of wills and endurance. The lead was traded many, many times and the match went into the early morning until finally, Lupton came away with the victory after 24 grueling rounds, with a score of 9.5-8.5. It was decided after this match to pause the challenge match to allow the duelers (and audience) time to rest.

After a postponement of a day, the two met for a third and decisive duel. This match was in stark contrast to the second, as Reign was dominant and secured a victory by 5-0 after 7 rounds. Lupton's challenge was turned away, and it was rumored the Warlord died shortly afterwards. If so, his final match will be one that will be remembered and discussed for ages. (Details)

Recently returned duelist, Jay Capistrano, defeated five other fighters to win the All Ranks Tournament. This was a significant moment for Jay, having never won such a tournament before in the Duel of Swords. Jay claimed the Test-Free Overlord Challenge. OverReign decided to not risk another two-day challenge and chose to defend with a single duel. Jay dueled under the blue and gray banner of the Wrecking Crew. He was seconded by Myria Graziano, Maria Graziano, and Ria Graziano. His lady of honor was his wife, Samiyah Capistrano. Reign dueled under the colors of black and red with a golden crown. She was seconded by Terry King. Her persons of honor were Royal and Nako.

Throughout the duel Reign and Jay casually discussed everything from teams to merchandise to surfing. Jay opened with the first point, but lost his lead by round five. In the twelfth round, while discussing rapiers, maces, and bats, Reign whirled her gunblade to put herself within a half point of victory. Jay tenaciously fought to keep her there, but Reign's conditioning routine would outlast him. Reign notched her fifth defense 5.5-4 in 15 rounds. (Details)

After picking up the Overlord challenge grant at the ART, Ebon Ilnaren pressed this challenge to see if he could relieve Reign of her hold on the Overlord title now that she has been holding it for more than a year. Reign selected a single duel format, and the two fighters faced each other in the chosen ring. Reign defended with her trusty gunblade, while Ebon wielded a staff for the occasion.

Ebon opened the fight with intention, attempting a direct strike at Reign, but Reign was the first to score with a nifty avoidance. As Ebon fell into a defense stance, Reign doubled up her points with a high shoulder strike. After holding each other off for another round, Reign found another point when she somersaulted backwards, creating more space in the ring, and ducking Ebon's high-swinging staff. A bit of posturing finally allowed Ebon to find his opening, high-striking again while Reign could not escape. With one point on the board, Ebon tried to swing momentum in his favor, but a defensive round quickly gave way to Reign finding her matchpoint with yet another direct strike. And though Ebon heroically held her off, he could not find a way back into the fight, and Reign soon landed a direct strike and her defense with a 5-1 victory in 11 rounds.
