A Wake for All Saints IV (Board Event)

Post by Strawberry »

Come play with us…

Now that Fort Hope has become Fort Nope, and the ghosts of Cadentia have long since been laid to rest, it is time once more for the return of A Wake for All Saints (Edition IV). This year, in cooperation with the Warden of Overlook, the fourth year of A Wake for All Saints will be held at the majestic Overlook .

As with years prior, there are two options for your approach, it simply depends upon how much adrenaline you wish to stir up before your arrival. For those seeking a sedate but scenic ride to the Overlook, spectral carriages await riders at various locations throughout the city. Simply find the waystations that are marked with an etching of a skull surrounded by an Autumn leaf. For a more cardio-intensive approach, follow the walking trail along the Fickle Roads across the grounds of the Overlook instead.

Ultimately, no matter your choice, you will arrive at your final destination: The Overlook.

True to its name, the Overlook looms upon the mountainside and watches over the valley below. Once a wayfaring hotel, the stark white walls were a soothing comfort for travelers, seen far and wide by those emerging from tumultuous river valley roads and perilous peaktop passes alike. Capped with an unmistakable roof, the mahogany reads rust red in the light of the moon, a red-cap reminder that, comforting though it may be, not all is as it seems for this wild hearth. Now a hospitable-but-secluded estate, it has been refashioned to welcome the Warden of Overlook and whomever they deem their guest(s) for the evening.

Once you arrive at the Overlook, decide where the evening may take you, for the choice is yours. Catch a glimpse of a single candle’s flame in the window of the old Carriage House? Feel free to explore (at your own risk) or head inside for a visit to the Shining Speakeasy to have a drink with the Overlook’s original owner. Looking for a scare? Venture up the grand staircase and find Room 712 and face your fears, or sneak through the boiler room to head down into the tunnels and caves beneath the manor for a ghost hunt.

No matter your choice of thrills, be sure to drop in to the Overlook’s ballroom for a dance and a bite to eat. Enjoy live music, signature cocktails, and the ever thrilling annual costume contest with judging categories for best solo, couple, group, scary, and silly costumes.

The party begins when the clock strikes nine and doesn’t end until the night’s last specters disappear with the dawn of All Saint’s Day. Unlike the ghosts of the Overlook, you can leave at any time, but feel free to stay (or come back!) for a morning after breakfast before returning to the city. A limited number of private rooms have been appointed for guests along with temperature regulated glamping digs on the Overlook manor grounds.

Guests and parents, please be advised that this event is intended for adults or those of comparable maturity. Those under the age of eighteen will not be permitted without a guardian and a liability waiver signed prior to entrance.

((Just a board event to celebrate the evening. Feel free to play off of it however you wish. Post here, reference it in live play, play some of it in one of the rooms, ignore it completely, the possibilities are endless. Click the links above to jump to the associated post for that feature for more info!

Feel free to post your character’s outfit or costume to this thread. As you’ll find later in the thread, there will be a costume contest and a ghost hunt! Winners will be chosen by dice roll in the Green Room sometime on 11/3 just to give people plenty of time to post, so be sure to post your participation in each event if you want to be a part of the roll! Winners get an icon and an in character prize, for more information on all of that keep reading!

Thank you to Delahada for letting Karma borrow the Overlook for the night. I appreciate it!))

Spectral Carriages -- Ride the Fickle Way

For those seeking hot chocolate and a pleasant ride to the evening’s festivities, simply find the waystations throughout town that are marked with an Autumn leaf around an etching of a skull. Take the scenic route along the Fickle Roads by way of spectral carriages led by ghastly horses. Only available once the sun has set, the buggies will carry riders up the mountainside to drop them off right at the front door. Trust that this route is perfectly serene, so long as the steeds remain unspooked.

Hopefully there is nothing out there that can scare a ghost, right?

The Mystic’s Maze

Fancy a mosey on foot? Take the walking path from the bottom of the winding road up, up, up to the massive manor on the hill. Through the forest first, a lovely woman in traditional Vistani garb offers those passing by a chance to have their fortune told by the (in)famous Raven Lady. Follow her to their camp just off the path for a drink and a story by the fire or step into the Raven Lady’s tent for a reading. Take care not to rudely decline their hospitality or you may find your luck changing in the coming days, often for the worse.

As the treeline breaks, the only way to the manor from there is through the Mystic’s Maze, a massive towering hedge maze that requires no small amount of savvy and at least a little bit of self-preservation. Puzzles and riddles abound and clever souls must seek the green crystal at the center of the maze in order to break the vines at the end so that they can finally walk free. Wield the pink crystals found in treasure chests along the way to ward off the things that go bump in the night, including an oversized chainsaw-wielding psycho, a hoard of shambling zombies, and more than a few nasty beasties just waiting to take a bite out of everyone’s beautiful ensembles.

Can you break free from the maze or will you become one of its ghastly specters?

Carriage House Creepshow

Chase the candle in the window and explore the carriage house to see what waits within. At a glance, the rickety outbuilding appears to be nothing more than a ruinous remnant of days gone long since past. But a closer examination and a simple pull of a bookshelf in a dusty room filled with plastic covered furniture yields a passage to a space beneath the carriage house.

In this subterranean lounge you can find an assortment of dark carnival acts, the main show of which is a nefariously handsome magician by the name of Lloyd. Amidst a world of illusion and mystery in a place outside of time, where the rules of reality no longer apply, enjoy an unforgettable experience full of tricks and treats, sure to convince even the most stout of skeptics.

Will you be brave enough to volunteer to play the magician’s assistant? It is said that all who do disappear mysteriously in the middle of the act, never to be seen again. At least until later, thanks to the trap slide that carries his assistants down into the tunnels beneath the carriage house and manor for a stealth escape. All who volunteer also leave with an enchanted tarot card and a t-shirt that reads “I Survived Lloyd St. Clair’s Creepshow and All I Got Was This Stupid Card”. The tarot card, however, grants the wielder a single Wish, the mightiest spell a mortal creature can speak into existence.

Be careful what you Wish for because you just might get it.

The Shining Speakeasy

Seek out the Shining Speakeasy for a night of Prohibition era style drinking, music, showgirls, gang-wars, and… murder? The bar’s spectral keeper, Gideon Featherstone, can play you a tune at the piano while telling you the tale of Sanguine Ligurio, the gang of ruffians and thugs that met their end right there in the speakeasy. As he spins his oratory tale, the ghosts of the dead stir and relive their last days. One begs the gathered patrons to help them solve the murders and lay their spirits to rest for good.

On that night, anyone who was anyone was at the Shining Speakeasy, a beacon of debauchery in an era of teetotaling tightness. The house band belted out their jazziest tunes while Moria and her backup singers performed like their lives depended on it. Gideon was there too, he saw it all from behind the bar where he kept vigilant watch over stage and door alike to keep the brass out and the party in.

Last Chance Covington, head honcho of the Sanguine Ligurio sat in the midst of it all, eyes on the singer Moria while his throng of right hand men and other clingers-on milled about around him, laughing, joking, and carrying on.

His side boy, Kenny 'The Brain' Cresto wouldn’t be laughing too much longer. The speakeasy’s door bursts open and in comes a masked ruffian just between Moria’s musical numbers. Kenny, the poor sap, by the time the ruffian was finished, he looked like a block of swiss cheese. From there, all hell broke loose as the crowd tried to run or fight in equal parts. They fought the masked murderer, they fought each other, they fought the staff, and most of all, they fought to try and escape.

A dozen died that night, Gideon tells you, and a few more perished after the fact. The manor’s security descended upon the scene quickly in hopes of apprehending the culprit but all they found was a gaggle of hysterical jazz musicians, a handful of trampled servers, and a number of holey gangsters.

But the only way in or out is through the secret door from the manor’s billiards room and the doorkeeper swore up and down that nobody came in that way in the hour leading up to the murder and they sure as hell didn’t leave that way so soon after either. So just how did the masked madman get inside undetected? And better yet, how did he escape?

The only sane conclusion: He was still there!

Head of security, Thomas Blagg, was there so everyone waited for him to work out who dunnit. Only problem; the man doesn’t have two brain cells to rub together to put together a coherent sentence let alone unravel this mystery. All he managed to do was lock everyone inside and check the kitchen and green room for any masked marauders. Inevitably, he found nobody.

It’s up to you to figure out who murdered Last Chance Covington, Kenny Cresto, and the others so that they can finally rest their weary souls. Explore the speakeasy to search for clues and see if you can piece it all together in time to apprehend the culprit!

Room 712

Settle in for a history lesson before you head to room 712 to face your fears. In 1811, a severe storm caused the Overlook to lose all power. Back then, the primary method of lighting a building was gas lighting, this fact is important so don’t forget it. Hoping to keep working uninterrupted, a young maid by the name of Wisteria Ellison entered room 712 armed with but a candle to cut through the darkness. But since the gas lamps had been snuffed, they were left to leak noxious gas into the enclosed room, creating the perfect environment for an explosion of epic proportions. The fireball ripped through the room, destroying a portion of the manor for some time and sent the poor maid to the floor below, all the while aflame.

Her injuries were extensive, consisting of burns over three quarters of her body, but miraculously she escaped with her life. After her recovery, she even returned to the Overlook to continue working until a premature death ten years later, caused by unfortunate complications of her injuries long ago. Some say she passed in room 712 even (though take that rumor with a grain of salt), and since her passing, strange events have been reported in that very room. Many think it is Wisteria herself who haunts the room and some have even claimed to see her apparition silhouetted in the window.

For one night only, Wisteria has returned to grace room 712 once more, where she faced the worst moment of her life and walked through it alive. Otherwise known as the Burned Lady, the specter will welcome solo and duo visitors only, no groups larger than that will be allowed within. It is within room 712 that one will find their deepest, darkest fears and there they will be given the chance to confront and maybe even overcome said fear. Once the door closes behind you, there is no escape (save for a safe word written on a small metal plate affixed to the door) until you acknowledge what scares you.

It could be creepy crawlies or it could be the dread of loss, it could be abandonment and rejection or it could be unrestrained heights or enclosed spaces. Whatever your fear, the room seems to twist and shift around you until what ails you surrounds you on all sides. Muster the courage to face it or cower away in the corner, whatever your tactic, the choice is yours. The Burned Lady maintains an ever serene facade and offers quiet encouragement along the way but no guidance save that. If you are going to conquer your fear, you must do so yourself.

May you too walk away from your worst moment with your life and a renewed zest for living.

((Particularly astute or arcane inclined characters may glean that the room is a pocket dimension containing a particularly powerful Dreadweaver, an otherworldly creature somewhat akin to a psychic vampire, that feeds on the fear of those around it. The Burned Lady is no ghost at all, but rather the Dreadweaver’s counterbalance, a fey creature called an Aoibhneas (literally “Bliss”).))

The Tunnel Hunt

Sneak through the boiler room, cut through the steam, and emerge in the tunnels that crisscross the subterrane beneath the Overlook. A small cavern is manned by a brave young adventurer who tells you of the ghosts within the tunnels. Wretched things small and large that love nothing more than dragging unsuspecting spelunkers into the depths of the dark. The adventurer has been tasked with clearing the ghastly things out and would like your help!

Suit up with a proton pack connected to a handheld plasmoid gun so that you can zip and zap the ghosts you find in the halls beyond. A counter on the pack’s chestplate dings with each vanquished ghosty and the ghost hunter with the highest count is promised a 10,000 silver reward from the overwhelmed adventurer.

But beware the Tide Turner, a looming thrall that can appear from impossible spaces, cracks, crevices, and even through solid walls, for if it manages to touch you, you will find yourself transported to the end of the tunnels with your pack’s counter reset and your caught ghosts released back into the fray to haunt again.

((Want to try your hand at ghost hunting? Head to the #green-room and ?roll 3d6 to see how many ghosts you vanquish. If you roll a 1, the Tide Turner finds you and your count is 0 no matter the other dice. If your character would like to try one more time, detail in your post just how they escaped the tunnels to get back to the start and you can roll a new set of 3d6. Post your results with your post here! Highest verified result wins a prize! Like the costume contest, it will be open until 11/3))

Danse Macabre -- A Ghostly Gala

Hosted in the Overlook’s grand ballroom, the evening’s epicenter comes in the form of Danse Macabre, a gala for the dearly departed and those still alive. As with years past, the dance party will offer plenty of thrills, hot eats, cool treats, endless cocktails, and the ever popular costume contest. The center of the ballroom is an open dance floor, easy real estate for those seeking to dance til they die. Around the edge of the ballroom, tables in rounds of ten are draped with goth-couture linens and the finest china this side of the Rhydinian sea.

Waiters, both living and spectral, bring around menus and serve drinks to the hungry and the parched.

All food and drink is covered by generous sponsors, though be sure to tip your bartender!

On the ballroom stage overlooking the revelers below, a ghostly string quartet enchants diners until dinner ends, at which point the strings disappear in favor of pan²ic favorite tunesmiths, DJ Carnage, Ministre, and DJ ∞ (Pronounced DJ Infinity) who will trade off spinning beats until the early morning.

Be sure to break out the best of the best costume-wise, for the evening’s hostess, Karma Armstrong, will be judging you accordingly and handing out prizes for the best dressed! Now with more prizes and more judging categories, including Best Solo Costume, Best Couple/Duo Costume, Best Group (3+) Costume, Best Scary Costume, and Best Silly Costume.

((Please post your costumes to this thread. Winners will be chosen by RNG on 11/3))

The evening's hostess donned a Bride of Frankenstein costume (slightly modernized of course) for an electrifying ensemble to dance the night away.

Most of her evening was spent in the grand ballroom, entertaining guests and ultimately judging the costume contest, but periodically she popped up in the strangest places seemingly from nowhere. Each time, she reveled in the pop scare, shared a cheeky smile for the trouble, and then disappeared once more.

Was it a low effort costume? It always was for Reign. Mostly because of the guilt she felt about slipping out of her sister's birthday shindig to attend the haunting on the hill or whatever the fuck it was. The ghostly horses sort of freaked her out so she opted to travel on foot, figuring it was likely to be the lesser of two evils.

How wrong she was.

A reading with the Raven Lady didn't seem like the best idea but the others in the camp were so insistent that Reign felt obligated to duck into the tent to see what the cards held for her.

The Hunter. Oh boy. "Gains through long pursuit. The chase will yield its prizes if only you persist."

Whatever the fuck that meant.

The next card prompted a pause by both the Raven Lady and Reign alike.

The Obsidian King. "A warned event will come to pass. Success or failure will depend on how warnings were heeded. Beware practitioners of dark magic."

Easier said than done in a place like this, but alright.

The last card tied it all together most spectacularly.

The Fey. Mama always said don't fuck with the Fair Folk. "Mysteries and inconclusive or strange endings brought by a mysterious or unknown person."

Mysteries from a mysterious person, who would have thought. Reign left a handful of silver in a brass bowl for the Vistani woman and quickly departed whilst mumbling about needing to get to the party. She was certain she could hear laughter chasing her out of the camp.

The horrors of the mystic maze seemed a cakewalk compared to the conflicting thoughts left in her head after the reading. It took her longer than she would have hoped, if only because she found herself cornered more than once by the hoard of zombies in the maze, but she found on closer inspection that while they seemed apt to bite, they didn't quite get close enough to do more than spook her. So she dipped and ducked and danced around them as she collected pink crystals enough to light her way to the center of the maze where a touch of chilled fingers to a green glowing crystal allowed her escape on the opposite end of the labyrinth.

When she emerged at the front entrance of the Overlook, the disheveled camp counselor look was effortless. Reign spent the first hour after that nursing a stiff drink in the ballroom before taking a second one with her upstairs to see what the Burned Lady had in store for her. As the door of room 712 closed behind her, all light winked out within. Sound disappeared too, until all she could hear was the hammering of her own heart in her ears.

There was Nothing.

She woke up in one of the Overlook's other rooms the next morning, unsure of where the rest of the night had gone after that. Needless to say, she didn't stay for brunch.

Rumors circulated that the Warden of Overlook was in attendance this evening, and many guests spoke of their fleeting encounters with him. He was never in any one place for very long. The evidence of his being was left in lingering traces of shadowy red blight that the extremely cautious were wise not to touch. Seen in glimpses lurking in the shadowy turns of The Mystic's Maze or lounging in a back seat at the Carrige House Creepshow, Salvador never lingered long enough for conversation, if he was even actually there at all. He might have been mistaken for one of the mobsters haunting The Shining Speakeasy, though when it came time for the big reveal he was nowhere to be seen at all. Others claimed they caught him holding whispered conversations with Wisteria in Room 117. The one place where guests reported the most sightings of him was during The Tunnel Hunt, claiming he took part in the chase. There were even sightings of him in the grand ballroom during the Danse Macabre, keeping mostly to himself and watching the festivities from the shadows of the walls. By sunrise the following morning, he was gone, but the memory of his haunting presence was everlasting.

Look, sometimes costumes don't make sense to everyone. But they made sense to Andrea and Lil, and thus they wore them accordingly.

The pair spent most of the night in the speakeasy, drinking, before moseying over to the ballroom to see the costume contest judging and to heckle the evening's hostess. Lovingly of course.
Well, I looked my demons in the eyes
laid bare my chest, said "Do your best, destroy me.
You see, I've been to hell and back so many times,
I must admit you kind of bore me."
