The lies we tell ourselves

Post by Red urThorne »

The room was filled with people she didn't know all cycling through to meet and greet the artist of the week. She hadn't had an exhibition at this museum in a decade but it seemed that some of these patrons had remembered and were here with high expectations.

Another man approached her with his hand extended while speaking, "Miss ur' Thorne, a pleasure to see you again. You new work is breathtaking." He was around six feet tall, which meant he needed to look up slightly to make eye contact, his dark hair was grey around the temples. He had stunning blue eyes and Red thought she should probably remember him; she didn't just like the dozen or so others that omitted their names as though she should just *know* them.

"You are too kind, and I am lucky that some enjoy my work enough to support me," Red said honestly. Before she started making money as an artist she had been a mercenary; that line of work had done bad things to her spirit, she was much happier now. She was happier now? The decision to come back to Rhydin was not one that she had taken lightly; this town held some of the happiest moments of her life, side-by-side with the worst. "I am a coward."

"Excuse me, Miss ur' Thorne?" The blue-eyed gentleman was still there, he had been talking while her mind wandered.

"I am afraid I can't recall your name. I'm better with faces," she shrugged apologetically to the man.

He looked a little hurt but he recovered quickly enough and told her his name and continued speaking of what he appreciated in regards to her artwork. She thought later that she probably should have tried to stay focused long enough to have caught the name but her mind was miles away.

If she had been honest with herself from the beginning she would have known that she stayed away so long because of Rix. A ball of emotions rolled around in the pit of her stomach like a bad glass of milk. At some point she had convinced herself that she stayed away because she didn't want to see him; that just the thought of laying eyes on the man again would be distasteful. That lie was so bold and so far from the truth, so far. He wouldn't want to see her, that was the fear that kept her from returning. Rix would be here and he would... he would shun her and in his eyes would be nothing. That would have broken her, to see him and for there to be no trace of emotion in his eyes.

She nodded, there had been a pause and the blue-eyed man was looking at her expectantly. In response he took her by the arm and lead her toward one of her paintings. He was speaking about the painting as they approached and making some observations that were fairly acute, still her attention would not be contained.

Her agent had contacted her with the proposal to do an exhibition in Rhydin, it seemed that a few collectors were actively looking for her work. Red agreed quickly, and at the time she told herself that it would be alright she would stay out of her old haunts and there would be no need to fear a chance meeting.

That resolution had lasted about two hours after she arrived back in town. She had taken up residence in the same apartment over the museum she had when she lived here previously and that was a mistake. The murals she had painted on the walls and ceiling were still there, if a bit faded. It looked like someone had taken time to preserve the work though they hadn't done the best of jobs. When she entered the bedroom and saw his eyes looking at her... those blue eyes tinted with hints of green, she had nearly turned back around to leave again. Instead she found herself in the arena telling herself that she definitely wasn't looking for him.

A few days later she had herself convinced he wasn't here anymore, oh she wouldn't ask anyone to confirm that and she had carefully avoided being in speaking range of Nova or Sartan. When she saw the notice that Maria wanted a challenger it certainly wasn't that she wanted notice to get around that she had returned, right? She had asked Kalamere about the woman and it seemed like she'd be a fun opponent. Red had never challenged before and it would be a good experience, right? The thought that Rix would see the notice and ... and what?

"So you'll do the commission for me?" The blue-eyed man was staring at her intently. There was something in his gaze that made Red feel that he knew her thoughts were elsewhere and he was taking advantage of it.

"Of course," handing him a business card with contact information, "I'll be free most of next week to discuss the details. You'll have to speak with my agent regarding price."

And nothing. Nothing. She would finish the exhibition and then maybe hang around if the dueling was fun or she actually won the challenge.

"I look forward to meeting up with you again, Miss ur'Thorne," and the way he smiled with the words made her pause and wish she had paid more attention to the conversation. If it was something obscene she would blow him off later, her agent would handle it for her if she asked.

Yeah, she drew in a deep breath, Rix was long gone, no need to borrow trouble.

The days leading up the challenge match were fun. Maria was a woman of sharp wit, and a razor tongue; sadly Red enjoyed this and kept poking the bear. The worst that could happen was that she would lose, and Red wasn't so invested in the Barony itself for that to worry her in the least. That was the worst? There was a lot of foaming around the challenge now, surely everyone who was anyone had heard it was going to take place; hell, there were even betting lines on it.

The commission turned out to be innocuous, some well-to-do folks in New Haven wanted signs of the cross and holy images painted on their outer walls. She had heard rumors that one of the Baronies had gone to an undead lord so she assumed that was the reason. She had no idea what holy images, if any, actually kept undead lords at bay but they were paying so she would paint.

The night of the challenge came quick but thankfully the messengers she hired had found Raven and Slothy and both gentlemen showed up to stand with her. Standing by the ring with the place full of familiar faces it almost felt like coming home. Almost, there was a part of her mind that knew something, no someone, was missing.

The first match was brutal and quick, she made a good showing but loss in the end. Red still felt good about the evening, she could catch bits and pieces of casual conversation and laughter. As she prepared for the second match she glanced around the room. During the match she had thought she heard... yes, standing against a wall a smile forming on his lips was Rix.

"I think I'll stick with the sword Slothy, Ravens favor is bound to give it luck this time." Besides there was a feeling in her gut that was beginning to drive her to distraction. She looked away from Rix telling herself it was the baseball bats to the stomach making her want to curl up in a ball.

The second match was much the same as the first, given the score was so close she figured she at least gave people a good show. Red managed to remember to thank Raven and Slothy for being there for her, she truly appreciated it. Her resolve not to look toward where she saw Rix lasted a full thirty seconds. He was still there, looking at her as she looked at him.

Part of her brain screamed for her to look away, to retreat, to... and then he was there. "So. Uh, hey. Heard you were back. Tough loss. You look good," the words seemed to tumble out of Rix, quick as a river trying to make it's way to the ocean. Her breath caught, but that was only because of all the hits she took to the stomach, right? He looked better than her memories of him, broader in the shoulder maybe, his eyes a little bluer? "Thanks, and yeah, back," was the eloquent and brilliant reply her brain supplied. She supposed it was better than the litany that had started the moment he got in range which was something along the lines of -- throw arms around those big, broad, yummy shoulders, do it, do it now, now, NOW!

One of his hands rose to rub the back of his neck, he looked almost vulnerable, "You gonna be around long?" Her brain helpfully tried to provide Long enough to throw my arms around you and hug you and...and... and anything else I can manage to get away with. She went with,"I'm planning on being here for awhile at least." That was true! Who knew how long it would take to paint those houses in New Haven, it had nothing to do with the fact that Rix was here, and now she knew it.

Her filter apparently was expired because she heard herself saying,"Heard a few things about well, you," oh GODS! she totally didn't want to talk about what she had seen in that trash rag (admittedly an addictive and humourous trash rag) about him,"Doing well?" Her feet were shuffling and she could feel the blush creeping up from her shoulders to overtake her face as he asked, "What'd you hear about me?"

Say nothing, say nothing! "I um, almost embarrassed to say," almost, yeah, almost her on FIRE face was screaming,"I was reading this gossip column... and it kind of mentioned you." "Oh right right. That thing. I think they have it in for me." He chuckled and began fidgeting with his hands. "That's a long story. And now you're here. Like, right here. In front of me."

Red was so happy that he seemed to dismiss what had been written there her arms nearly flew up to wrap around him without her permission. She tucked her hands in her pockets, that would show them who's boss! "Yeah I noticed that," along with the fact he still smelled like how she remembered, still had that same warm smile, still... "Right.here."

The thoughts that were warring in her mind were not helping her in the least. See-sawing between wanting to flee before he realized how much she wanted to wrap her arms around him and wrapping her arms around him. He was so close, she had given up hope that she'd ever see him again. She didn't want to scare him away, he was here and she would give anything...

"I, uh. I haven't made the best decisions, and I've made mistakes, you know? But I never thought I'd see you again and," Rix stopped speaking, chewing on his lower lip. In the time it took him to finish his sentence Red was pretty sure her heart had stopped beating. He was explaining that he had made mistakes? Cripes that was just wrong, it was the mistakes that she had made that kept her from coming back, she had been a coward and now she would surely pay for those mistakes. The words he spoke next jump started her heart, "I, uh, I really missed you."

She could feel a ghost of a smile forming, not knowing what to do now that he hadn't just dismissed her out of hand. He had missed her! Her chin tilted up to look him in the eyes, one of the few men in her life that was significantly taller than she, and she could see no deceit there, no lies. "I missed you too," the words coming out in a hushed whisper. "I'm," she began but the words wouldn't come, so she fell back on humor,"I've made some mistakes too. Shocking, I know." Her smile tugged just a bit wider as she tried for casual.

The smile that lit his face was almost enough to force her forward, she wanted nothing more than to feel his arms around her, "Yeah, yeah. But, if you're gonna be around, I was wonderin' if maybe you'd like to go grab a bite to eat sometime or somethin'? Or maybe a ride?"

The way he looked at her brought back memories of when they had first met. Oh, she had read that paper and it's claims that Rix was a playboy now, but the Rix she had met so long ago had a streak of shy in him that was just wide enough to be endearing. Red felt out of her depth, treading waters that could drown her if she didn't find a life line soon. BREATHE! The thought broke through her muddled state, she had forgotten for long moments as she formed her answer, "Yeah, I think we can work that out." No prizes for witty repartee would be given out tonight! "I have a new Harley, and I do need to eat," she ventured as she tried to recover from her surprise at the way the conversation was heading.

He laughed. "Most people do! If you listen to Nova and Sartan, they say I eat too much. But they're jealous or something," he nodded his head a few times, "And yeah, if you got a new bike... I gotta try it out with you."

SCORE! Just the thought of having him on the back of her bike, holding on to her waist. She had learned a few new tricks and her new bike could hug corners like the devil, if she went a little too fast and hit a corner he'd have no choice but to hold on tighter, right? Oh the thought of it was causing her smile to widen to a painful point, her cheeks were going to crack. "So... have your people call my people?" "You have people now? You've moved up in the world!" Rix exclaimed with a laugh.

At the last moment she realized her hands were out of her pocket and her arms were twitching forward. Treacherous creatures! Taking a deep breath she said, "Well, no... and I figured your people were Nova and Sartan and my people are, well, me." She smiled up at him, watching his expression with a quiet intensity.

"Well, how can I get a hold of you?" The words left Rix's lips and her brain immediately jumped on it, sending the signal to her arms that now would be the time to toss themselves around his shoulders at last. He was continuing but the signal had been sent, "Not in the physical sense! I mean...er.. I'd like to but that seems creepy so soon and," and that was about how far he got before Red arms flung themselves around him and her face was buried against his chest. "I'm gonna stop talking now," he finished.

The rest of his words finally registered, she decided she would just pretend like this was normal and she spoke into his chest, the words muffled, "I have a place above the art museum. You can send a message there." She was getting ready to release him when his arms wrapped around her, holding her tightly.

The sigh that escaped was close to a sob from the relief she felt,"Wasn't sure you'd want to see me." Was pretty sure you wouldn't, her internal monologue corrected. "I wasn't sure you'd wanna see me. I was scared, but wanted to show up here..." Rix said as he held her closer.

"So, a ride and a meal?" Her internal monologue providing a completely different itinerary causing a blush to creep up her pale flesh again. Rix had lowered his head and his face was so close; she leaned back, one hand sliding down to rest on his chest. "Sounds good to me," he whispered and she could feel her fingers clutch at him.

Abruptly she dropped her arms before they did something else she wasn't expecting them to do, she almost cried out as Rix dropped his arms away. They had felt so nice where they were, they had felt ... right and she was messing it up. Maybe he saw the desperation in her eyes because he leaned in and his lips brushed across her cheek, "Suppose I should be lettin' you go now. It was good to see you, Red..."

It was about eight years after she had last seen the back of Rhydin, she was standing under a sky full of brilliant stars and a moon so full that it looked close enough to touch. High on a cliff of a place that had been a home to her more years ago than she would admit to anyone, and she sang:

And everything I want I take
And everything I love I break
And every night I lie awake
I can't do that thing anymore
I can't be the thing I was before
Maybe I am better off alone
Because I crush everything
And I crush everything *

As the last notes drifted off and out into the night a voice called from behind her. "One might think that the writer of that song knew you well lass." Red didn't jump, she had heard him approaching or rather he had allowed her to hear his approach. "You're not nearly so funny as you think you are Samael," was her reply as she moved away from the cliffs edge.

"You're thinking of him again," it wasn't a question and so it got no reply. A moment later "You are, are you not?" Red sighed as he persisted when it was obvious she did not want to answer. "It doesn't matter now, nor ever, so leave it. After all, I did," her voice sounded cold to her ears, that was good because she didn't want Samael to think that the one she was thinking of was important to her still.

It was ten years ago she had walked away from the man in front of her now. Making small talk with him was ... was a reminder that she could feel true happiness and not just put on a facade. He was blushing a bit and clearing his throat, it was so endearing she began to laugh. "It really is good to see you Rix. Even if you make me feel like an awkward teen that has never been kissed," even as she said the words she was shocked at the honesty of them. He did make her feel young, naive and curious. Her hand rose, her fingertips gently traced the curve of his cheek.

"Don't go back," the mans voice was harsh, full of daggers and command. "You don't hold sway over where I go or what I do," a pause before she amended the statement, "Not anymore."

Even so it would be another two years before she found herself wandering the streets of Rhydin, Samael might not hold sway over her now but there was history.

His hand had flattened over her hip, his palm firm against her body as he turned his cheek into the touch. "Yeah? Never been kissed?" Rix spoke the words as her fingers continued down along the strong line of his jaw, her chin tilting up so that her gaze met his for a long moment. The she heard words whispered so quietly she didn't have a chance to process them, "Ah, screw it," uttered from Rix just before the distance between them disappeared and his lips were pressed to hers. She felt her back stiffen, this was what she wanted right?
And everything I want I take

Rix must want it too, he initiated.
And everything I love I break

Her heart pounded so loudly in her ears, it was pushing out all thoughts but the warm sensation that was filling her body.
Because I crush everything

She surrendered to the kiss and pain filled her as the passion that had been shut away for a decade flooded in; her hands wrapped around his shoulders, pulling him tight. He must have sense the shift because she could feel his hands begin to explore, and she could feel a quiet intensity radiating from his body.

Beneath the kiss she moaned, her fingers grasped at his back and she could feel some point of no return quickly approaching. Leaning back and away from him was difficult,"Rix, I... if we don't stop now I'm not sure I'll let you stop."
And I crush everything

"I don't want to stop," spoken breathlessly before he nuzzled against her neck and kissed the flesh there.

It was her intent to get back to his house or her house, they made it to the inn upstairs. She flagged down one of the employees and threw gold at him to get a room, there and now. Once the door closed on the rented room they gave the neighbors something to complain about the next day... and she didn't care in the least.

((* Lyrics by Jonathan Coulton - I crush everything.))

Dozens of flickering torches lit the path up to the large wooden doors of the mansion. It was expansive, lovely, and a bit over the top for Red. As these people were giving her unreasonable amounts of gold to paint for them she felt she could overcome her aversion to the flagrant flaunting of wealth for this one night.

The fact that she had Rix on her arm might have contributed to her mood, and the fact that he looked good enough to eat probably didn’t hurt. Red had donned black jeans and a form fitting black shirt that dipped down in the front to pretend to show off some of her womanly traits. It was a compromise from her beat up blue jeans and t-shirt as the invitation had mentioned dressing “appropriately.”

A doorman greeted them coldly when they approached, and a look of shock and horror passed over the mans features as he realized they were actually invitees. “Please come this way, Lady,” he stammered a bit as he noticed that despite being a step up he still had to look up at the both of them, “And you M’lord.”

She heard Rix snicker into his hand, covering it with a cough. Keeping a pleasant smile on her lips she followed the man into the house. It was built to allow breezes to pass through pleasantly in the summer, and was a bit cooler indoors than it had been out.

The servant lead them through the passageways and out onto the terrace behind the house. Rix whistled softly, “Wow, this would be a great place to have a real party.” Indeed the land stretched out across well manicured lands, complete with a few decorative ponds. There were torches to light the way, but there were also balls of magic glowing with a multitude of colors that danced across the lay of the land giving the place a truly spectacular feel.

The gentleman that had invited her saw them approaching the gathering of people and headed over to welcome them warmly, “Miss Ur’ Thorne, I am so very pleased that you could make it tonight!” One hand extended toward Red and she offered him a hand to raise to his lips and he brushed a polite kiss across the back of her knuckles. If he noted that her hands were rough from work he didn’t show it. “This must be the Mr. Farve you spoke of earlier. Well met, I am Lord Maximilian Renwick.” His lips formed into a smile that was surely practiced, “Max for short.”

There was a bit of an uncomfortable pause as all three realized at the same time that Max was short. Oh not midget short to be sure but against Red’s six foot four and Rix’s six foot ten his height of barely six foot tall was noticeably shorter.

“Just call me Rix,” offered into the silence of utter awkwardness. Max nodded and proceeded to lead them into the crowd and introduce the both of them to the upper crust of New Haven.

After about an hour Red found herself leading Rix toward a secluded corner of the garden, her arms comfortably linked in his. “Is it just me or have we walked into a scene of Gulliver’s Travel,” she whispered up to him, glancing back over her shoulder at the gathering of people all of whom didn’t seem to break the six foot mark. Rix laughed in response, “I nearly always feel like that.” He wrapped an arm over her shoulder and pulled her close to kiss her cheek, “Though you help, at least I’m not the only one way up here.”

She turned so she could slip her arms around his waist and lifted her chin. He was getting better at noticing this was her “Gimme a smooch” move and he leaned down to kiss her gently. “That’s the real reason you invited me, isn’t it? So you wouldn’t be the tallest one in the place,” Rix asked with a teasing tone and that lopsided grin that made her heart skip a beat.

“Yep, you have figured out my plan. To drag you around with me so I look petite,” she laughed at that thought, as though anyone could look at her lanky form and think “petite.” He bobbed his head in agreement, “Knew it.”

She noticed that Max was trying to get her attention and she sighed, rocking her weight to her toes and kissing Rix before moving away from the embrace. Grabbing his hand she tugged him toward the waiting Lord, “Well that and its nice to have someone around to kiss, you know since Rell was busy.” “Ah HA! I knew it!” Rix exclaimed. He narrowed his eyes and whispered, “You’re just trying to make me jealous,” he paused then added, “Right?”

Her laughter lasted the rest of the way to Max, yes bringing Rix along made this type of event much more palatable.

The work on the painting was coming along nicely, the color composition was blending in a manner that surpassed what she had envisioned. The door to her flat swung open, which meant that Jaq would be shuffling his way to the back in a minute. It didn't concern her, she knew the old man lacked the social skills to realize he should knock rather than using the key he had. If he ever had those skills in his youth they had worn away or rusted through disuse over the years. He had explained, several times, that he preferred the company of art to that of humans, he understood the art better.

"It's going to be one of your best, lass." His voice was cracked and creaked like an old door swinging on hinges in need of oil. Jaq moved up to stand just behind her as he examined the piece with a critical eye. "The ocean-eyed boy again huh? Seen him leaving the other day, he your beau?"

Ocean-eyed boy. That won a soft laugh from her, she supposed at his age Jaq could call Rix a boy but still she found it a hard image to wrap her thoughts around. He was waiting patiently for an answer, it was nice that there could be silence between them and it never felt awkward. Ocean-eyed was an apt description of his eyes though, she had always painted them like a calm ocean view but never put that together. She loved his eyes and what she saw when she looked within their depths, always laughter and delight which never failed to wash over and consume any melancholy she felt.

"Have I ever told you that I was married, old man?" He rode the seeming change of topic with grace,"Married? You? Not to the ocean-eyed one? Can't picture it. I can remember the first exhibition you had here you know," that stated as if she would accuse him of having a poor memory because of age, "The ocean-eyed one appeared in one of those pictures too. Across a field with flowers I'd never seen the like of excepting my home in the highlands and a woman of exceptional green eyes looking at him with a hunger that I'd never seen excepting in my youth." He chuckled at that and shuffled his way over to the chair she kept in this room for his visits.

"It's complicated, Jaq." Her hand rose and another stroke of color was added to the canvas, "It was the ocean-eyed boy. In theory I suppose we could still be considered married. I never sought a dissolution." The brush arced and life bloomed in the center of the scene.

"You've never checked? Lass that sounds like you're scared. Haven't asked the boy? Brought it up even?" The questions were to the point, she had learned on her first meeting with the old curator that tack was not in his vocabulary nor his skill set.

There was another pause as she considered the questions. It would be easy to dismiss them, brush them away with a laugh and a lie that she didn't care. When had life been easy? When she was in his arms, that was it and the thought of losing that to find out if he still felt something more wasn't something she was willing to risk now. "I need his company, Jaq." The brush bringing more life to the stretched canvas, the scene nearly completed.

The old man made a sound that was something like empathy. "Had one of those myself in my youth. Does he know it?"

She glanced over her shoulder, a ghost of a smile touching her lips, "I'm not leaving you old man, no need to try and create ties to prevent such an event." He didn't seem inclined to allow her to squirm her way out of that with humor, "Lass, does he know it?"

With a sigh she turned back to the painting, a step back to examine the work. "One of my best huh?"

Jaq sighed but relented, "Definitely lass, let me know when you consider it done and we'll find a place for it in the gallery."

He left her alone then to work and to think, both things she wasn't sure she was up for the doing. The man that walked through the scene was ghostly, a pale imitation of the man except the face; the eyes held warmth. The scene was set on the bluffs of the highlands of her home. The waves crashing against the might of the rising earth, in the distance ships fought with the ocean a dance of death and love; for all sailors loved and respected the waters that provided their livelihood. In the hills were the impression of another presence, watching the ghost as it walked lightly over the land. It was a subtle thing, it wouldn't surprise her if Jaq noticed, that was what he did. Another moment and she decided she would take a break, maybe a ride on her Harley to clear her thoughts before finishing the painting up, and if her path took her near Rixs place, maybe she'd stop in.

The woman was standing back and making some comment about the dress. There were a mixture of how it complimented Reds complexion, her eye color and her hair color. Red just felt awkward in it.

The dress was well made, and it had been tailored to fit – nothing off the rack was a good fit for the six foot four inch woman. It was what was called a sundress and the colors consisted of a pale grey with forest green leaves decorating the length of it. There was something to be said for the way it emphasized her slight curves, turning them into something more womanly than her jeans and t-shirts ever accomplished. The hem came to a few inches above her knees and that meant that miles of leg were showing.

“You look lovely,” the saleswoman spoke with tones of honesty and something of surprise, or so it seemed to Red. When she had entered the shop a week ago and asked about a dress the woman had given her a hard squinty stare that stated that she didn’t believe Red would look good in anything feminine. “Let me get the shoes.” Saying so the woman scurried to the back to get the hand made sandals, they were of a grey leather that matched the dress and had silk straps that were there to wrap around the leg up to mid-calf of a deep green color.

Reluctantly Red tried the shoes on and stood looking at herself in the mirror. “He’s not going to recognize me.”

“He will. You look stunning. Did you want a wrap to go with it? Or perhaps a hat?” The woman apparently forgot who she was dealing with in the heat of the moment.

“I think not.” The finality in her tone warned the woman off.

“Then if you’d like to remove it, I’ll box it up for you.”

Red took one more look in the mirror, a frown creasing her brow.
“You really do look lovely.”

“I’m taking it, no need to do the sales thing.”

“It’s not a sales thing. You look stunning. With your height and curves you really should buy more to show off what God gave you!”

“That’ll be the day.” But still she felt a slight blush creep onto her cheeks as she stepped behind the curtain to remove the dress. All she could think was she hoped Rix wouldn’t laugh at her looking all “girlie” but she wanted to look… pretty for him tonight. She bit back the sigh, Gods just don’t let him laugh.

The night was cool and comforting, better yet she was resting against Rix, one leg draped over his thigh. The kilt she had tricked him into was in a pile on the floor and the thought of him in it made her consider waking him. She traced a soft line across his chest and sighed contentedly.

Marcus had done a wonderful job on the kilts, she would have try and pay more than what he quoted. The chances of doing that successfully were slim, she thought. Originally he had tried to insist that they would be free, she had given him such a stern look that he relented on that point.

It had been more than thirty years since they first met on a small, winding road that lead from the middle of nowhere to the heart of it. He had been with his wife and son, she had been alone and they insisted that she travel the rest of the distance with them. They thought that she was the one at risk, wandering the roads alone. When the five bandits had attacked them the second night of their travels they lost that illusion. Red had made short work of them, those men that would have raped his wife and sold his son to slavery. Telling a man that it had been nothing would have been insulting, it was his wife and his son and therefore it was everything. Red had never intended on collecting on the debt Marcus believed he owed; but when she found him here, in this shop and he looked at her so desperate to repay her for that deed so long ago... well she had hatched this plan to get Rix into a kilt.

They had barely made it to the estate before she jumped him, the surprise in his eyes was enough to make her laugh. It wasn't just the kilt, though to be fair that would have been enough. She had mustered the courage to ask if they were couple. He had replied by kissing her with a passion that left her knees weak. "Do we have to declare it or somethin'? Should I issue challenge to be your boyfriend?"

Thinking on that she should have said yes, it would have been another excuse to get him into a kilt. Jaq would give her a gloating look when she told him about the conversation. The thought of not telling him hadn't occurred to her, she told the old man nearly everything about her present. He was easy to talk to and nonjudgmental; he also understood the depth of her art and that was rare.

Rix stirred as if he were aware of someone watching him. There was a part of her that wanted to mark him as her own, a primal urge that sometimes threatened to overwhelm her senses. Thus far she had managed to keep that instinct at bay, though she supposed the conversation she had with him showed a slippage in her resolve. She had longed to hear him say that he was hers and hers alone.

There had been no time that Rix saw the potential of true violence in her and she hoped he never would. It was a concern that some line would be crossed and she would find herself in a position of asserting claim over him. She didn't want to do that, she loved him. Loved him more than anyone she had ever met and it was both bitter and sweet.

He stirred again and this time she shifted so that she could place a tender kiss on his lips, slowly gaining strength as he began to respond. When his hands moved, they gripped her by the hips and he rolled so that he had her pinned beneath his weight. "I'm thinkin' I still owe you a bit of revenge for sneaking me into that kilt shop."

The expression on his face and the husky quality of the words sent a shiver through her body, one he must of felt as his smile widened slightly. "If'n you think tha' Ah suppose there is nae but to accept such things." If she heard the accent back in her words she ignored it; her thoughts, her senses, her world was filled with Rix and that was good... and oh the revenge was so very sweet.

The weeks passed and she found herself growing content. There was a part of her mind that screamed this was not a good thing and that she shouldn't let herself be lulled into a false sense of security or belonging. She decided to ignore that part of her brain, focusing instead on the fine weather, her developing projects and her time with Rix.

On a particularly nice day she decided to head over to see Rix and if she could lure him into taking a ride on her bike. She didn't have to announce her arrival, the deep roar of the Harley did that. It didn't take Rix long to emerge from his home, wearing jeans and a T-shirt he strolled over. "Looking for a good time?" He said this with one of the smiles that melted her heart and she couldn't help but laugh.

Red tossed the spare helmet at his gut and replied,"I pay in milk and cookies, that good enough?"

"Is it ever!" This was said as he swung one leg over the back of the bike, slid close to her, and strapped on the helmet. His hands moved to her hips and his strong fingers gripped her firmly. "But you should be warned that I eat a lot of cookies."

"I think I can provide you with enough to satisfy." She flashed a Cheshire-cat grin over her shoulder before putting the bike in gear and taking off.

She drove them around the town, ignoring the annoyed glances of people as the beast of a bike passed through the neighborhoods. The weather was perfect for the ride, cool and crisp. After awhile she pulled up in front of a modest home, it was about a block from her current apartment and Rix gave her a puzzled look as they climbed off the bike. "Decided that collecting on the debt I owe in an empty home was the way to go?" His brows waggled and she laughed.

As an answer she grabbed his hand and started tugging him forward, he followed without protest. They wandered around the outside of the home first, it's brick facade simple but unique. There was a garden that wrapped around two sides of the home ending off on the front for the porch and the back for a balcony. Red wasn't saying anything, just pulling him along and looking. Next she retrieved a key from under the mat and opened the door.

"Not big on security, huh?" The tone in his voice saying that he believed he was about to get molested and was really looking forward to the prospect.

Instead of turning to him as she felt him lean in for a kiss, she tugged him along and through the home. There was a fireplace on the first floor in what would be a sitting room. Off to the side was a moderate living room, a dining room and a small kitchen. The second floor had a bath and a half and a large master bedroom, all wood floors and white walls. There was a basement, it was finished and had a high ceiling so that neither of them had to duck or feel trapped. When she finished the full circle in the basement was when she finally turned to him.

Red stood there silently, looking up at him. Rix took this as his signal to kiss her -- to be fair it was close to her kiss me posture-- his arms slid around her waist. He was bowing down to kiss her when she began to speak, stopping him mid-bow. "Rix, I um..."

His blue-green eyes looked down at her, a small frown crinkled his brows in a manner that she knew meant he was confused. "That is..." Red began again, stopped again.

"You're not still thinking that I'm going to leave, are you?" He sounded hurt and that forced the words from Red.

"No! No, I wanted to know if you'd move in with me. Here." Red waved a hand around at the basement, "Well you know the whole house, I wouldn't make you stay in the basement or anything. In fact I was thinking I'd use the basement as a studio. Not that we couldn't change that if you wanted, I'm sure we could." The words spilling forth like water from a broken dam, unable to stop herself or perhaps unwilling to give him a chance to tell her no.

"Well, just so long as you don't end up chainin' me up down here. Against my will, that is." He chuckled, the joke an attempt to stop her nervous rambling. "Red, I'd love to. Not only is it roomy and I don't have to duck anywhere, but it's with you. And that's the important part." Beaming a smile her way, the genuine excitement of accepting her proposal shining through his humor.

"And then if you want we could," Red finally stopped talking and rewound the past few seconds to review what Rix said. Then words failed her completely so she opted to throw her arms around his shoulders and pulled him down to kiss him with all the passion she felt for him.

When she pulled back she had a predatory grin on her lips, a hand moved to his chest and she pushed him against a wall "You know, we should check to make sure we have room to do everything while we're here."

"Oh? Did you bring Yahtzee or a twister board with you?" The smile on his lips was replaced by an exhalation of surprise as she tripped him to the ground.

"Yes, actually I did bring MY twister board with me." She proceeded to show him precisely what she meant by that... to be fair he didn't complain.
