This friday, May 13th Kabuki Street with help from the Zama Shrine will celebrate the conclusion of Golden Week with the fourth annual tradition of the Koinobori Matsuri. Halyards strung across the stretch of canal that marks Kabuki Street's northern boundary will be decorated with festive
koinobori, kite-like banners in colorful fabrics printed to resemble carp. During this festival of flying fish, Visitors are welcome to turn in their own banner to be displayed for the duration of the weekend, and prefabricated koinobori as well as DIY kits to fashion them are available at the JUSCO department store and many pop up street vendor stalls all around Kabuki Street. The local superstition is that to add embroidery of one's own family crest to the pattern of the banner to be flown brings good luck for the rest of the year.

The party begins in the afternoon, and will continue into the night with music, fire works and food stalls serving up festival favorites like yakisoba, ikayaki and shaved ice. Delinquents will all be on their best behavior (relatively speaking), and Kabuki's renowned security team, the Shinsengumi will be seen on horseback patrolling the vicinity to ensure no redcap invasions spoil the fun.
