Ragnarok Studium

Post by Strawberry »

Years ago, a cataclysm shook Twilight Isle to its core. The rise of Ragnarok tested the limits of the Wizard Klytus’s realm and nearly broke it in the days that followed. But as all things are wont to do in Rhydin, the Isle withstood the storm and came out all the better for it. Now, the only remnant of the cataclysmic fight is Ragnarok Island, far off the northwest coast of Twilight Isle proper. Until recently, the island was nothing more than the ruined remnants of Ragnarok Station and the Landing, the initial arrival points used during the Ragnarok Tournament over half a decade ago. The sole exception was the Eternity Spire at DeAngelo Point, a tower built at the highest point of the island to commemorate the lessons learned through Ragnarok. But even the spire fell into disuse, leaving the island bereft of life and purpose.

So what happens now?

After a conference with the headmistress of the Umbra School in southwestern Twilight Isle, it was decided and the past year has been spent building the perfect home for…

The Ragnarok Studium, a school of higher learning, offers collegiate level classes for students seventeen and older. A perfect transition for graduates of Umbra School of Magical Arts, another school in Rhydin, or any adult seeking to continue their learning, the Studium offers classes in a number of magic-related majors from aetherial studies to astromancy and everything in between.

Opening in the Spring of 2022 for introductory classes and orientations, Ragnarok Studium is now accepting applications from potential faculty and students alike. Class offerings will be limited at first but will expand with the Fall 2022 semester.

((Magic University? Why not! If you would like to say your 17+ character will attend Ragnarok Studium, feel free, no application necessary. More information coming soon! If you would like to have a character teach at the Studium, read on for more info on how to express interest.))

The Studium

The Studium campus is open and consists of several notably large buildings, several dozen smaller buildings, and a welcoming landing that is home to an open-air cafe that overlooks the station and portaling point that ferries students and visitors to and from the main island. All buildings have a vague Greek Renaissance architectural theme, mostly thanks to the existing ruins found on the island as far back as the original Ragnarok rising.

Propylaion Landing & Asphodel Cafe

The landing point of portalers and trainriders alike, the gateway to the Island is built on the remnants of what was once the Ragnarok black market and Ragnarok Station. Floating platforms extend out from the island into the sea, protected by barrier rocks that keep the worst waves from upsetting the tranquil lagoon. A single rail line connects the landing to the main isle, the train operating in just such the way it did in Ragnarok days; as needed. It keeps no schedule but takes only ten minutes each direction, and serves as a convenient way to access the Studium if portaling is not your cup of tea. Portal circles give braver souls an easy anchor place and connect to a corresponding set of portal circles in the Twilight Market.

To pass through Propylaion is to pass through the Asphodel Cafe, an open air cafe serving coffee, snacks, and light meals from 6am until 10pm each day. The cafe is manned by independent automatons of various builds, each marked by their sky blue aprons embroidered with their name or preferred designation.

Learner’s Meet

Easily the largest building on Ragnarok Island, Learner’s Meet is where the literal magic happens. Home to classrooms and administration, almost all classes are conducted within the Meet. It is divided by college in the interest of keeping professors close to their students but by and large, the layout allows easy movement between them. Each college is split into four departments. More may be added as the Studium evolves.

Pandora’s Box Library

The crowning jewel of campus is easily Pandora’s Box Library. What looks to be a large angular building with a vaulted interior ceiling, filled to the brim with floor to ceiling bookshelves, is actually five times that. Rather than build upward, the library goes down, a whole five massive stories into the belly of the realm itself. Some floors even sport windows that peer out into the endless sea that surrounds both Twilight Isle and Ragnarok Island. At the lowest levels, the sea is dark but even that deep, there are mysteries to be solved. The library, much like Asphodel Cafe, is manned by clockwork automatons that find sought-after tomes and reshelve those that have been returned. The library is open to the public, with the exception of two restricted sections that require aetherkeys to access. Aetherkeys are available to all professors and on a case-by-case basis to advanced students.

The Noumena

A collection of much smaller circular buildings fills the wooded area between Learner’s Meet and Pandora’s Box and serves as student housing for those wishing to live on campus. Each building can house twelve to sixteen students in single or double capacity dorm style rooms. Two buildings are designated for student-parents with small families and can host two families in each building. Each pod of 2-4 students has its own kitchen, living room, and bathroom space, while a larger communal common area in each building offers room for studying or socializing.

Zephyros

Zephyros serves as the Studium’s auditorium. Here anything from debates to assemblies to special speakers to live performances can be hosted. A ticket booth and coat check greets patrons just inside the doors before leading to a grand foyer with stairs leading to the second floor balcony seats as well as grandiose double doors that lead to the auditorium proper. The auditorium can comfortably host 413 guests with standing room viewing areas that can accommodate an additional 50. The seats, all newly installed, sport plush upholstery in rich shades of sapphire blue.

The Lethe

Close enough to hear the beat of the sea against the shore but far enough to find silence in the tranquil garden, the Lethe, a meditation garden, serves as a place of reflection and peace for visitors. A tiny stream runs through it, its waters a glittering turquoise flanked by well-tended flora unique to Ragnarok Island. Exotic blooms in stunning colors spill over planters beside the water and in elevated pots. Fountains feed the stream and collect coins tossed by wishful patrons seeking the answers to life’s questions. Three stone benches offer the only seating in the garden, spaced at near perfect equilateral positions triangulated around the garden proper.

Name: James Adia

Department(s): Department of Temporal Studies and Department of Ethics in Magic.

Class or Specialty: Chronomancy, Pyromancy, Umbramancy, and dabbles in various other disciplines.

Part-time/Full-time: Full-time

Applicable Experience: 500+ years of study in both the practical use and theoretical study of magic, with a focus on chronomancy. Several informal positions as a magical tutor.

Why you are right for the job: I have extensive experience with the use of temporal magic and the responsible use thereof. While my specific form of chronomancy is unique, the theoretical and practical applications of such are applicable in nearly any situation where manipulation of space-time, temporal flow, and the effects of time-travel are a factor.
The peculiarities of time travel and temporal manipulation present a number of ethical questions that any time traveller must be ready to consider to promote the responsible use of such power. In addition, I spent some time as a mercenary, and have first-hand experience with all facets of the moral use of magic in war and peace. I feel my qualities have prepared me for instruction not only in ethical application of chronomancy, but also as an instructor of introductory and general classes in the study of ethics in magical context.

Why you are right for the job: After the fading of Olympus into myth, I remained in the mortal world and moved among men, encouraging the growth of science and technology, learning from them as much as teaching them, and incorporating the new ways into the old magic. Now I wish to share this knowledge with those who would learn.

Name: Ettyn de la Rose
Department(s): Department of Magical Creatures
Class or Specialty: Slayer
Part-time/Full-time: Part-time

Why you are right for the job: Being a slayer is knowing more than how to kill a beast. You learn them first. Most beasts don't need killing. They need knowing, people knowing where the beasts belong, and what to do if they run into them where they should or shouldn't be. I know these things well. Others should, too.

Why you are right for the job: Few fonts of knowledge are more ancient than the genetic memory of the aboleth, passed down across aeons preceding and witnessing the rise of the mortal races. Department: Alchemy & Potions

Class or Specialty: Theory and Creation of Alchemical Blends and Potions

Part-time/Full-time: Part-time

Applicable Experience: Mixing of potions, salves, and oils for use in hunting, healing, and easing of ailments

Why you are right for the job: The creation of salves, oils and potions for use in my primary profession as a monster hunter combined with my lifelong herbalist practice has led me to interesting new theories on the application of alchemical principles to an expanding inventory of reagents. As the Baron of Dragon's Gate, I ran the dueling school and enjoyed the time in the classrooms. An opportunity to introduce students to alchemy and encourage them to apply their own theories presents the potential for safe advancement of the science.
