Surfing Party on Saturday, June 3rd

Post by Droet the Bold »

The Surfing Party will happen on Seaside Beach on Saturday, June 3rd. It may very well last all day. There will be music, food, and most importantly surfing. The Surf Shop will provide boards to have on hand for those that don’t have their own and instructors, including Droet, will give lessons on how to surf to those that want to learn.

For food, the main course is a pig cooked in the earth for hours which has been shredded into easy-to-take pieces and available with various vegetables (some raw, some cooked), breads, sauces, sides, and drinks. Vegetarians should have plenty to choose from. Full Menu

Tables bear a multitude of tropical flowers in simple wooden vases. A horde of tiki torches will provide light as the party stretches into the evening. There are a number of leis stacked on pegs for anyone who turns up and wants to wear one. There is also a dance floor, surrounded by rugs, for those that want to bust a move to the music.

Speaking of the music, there’s a DJ (and a spotify list)! A number of classic beach tunes will be played throughout the event.

From start to finish, Reign spent the entirety of the day at the Surfing Party at Seaside beach. The water was her home, a sanctuary that so often stole the tribulations of life away at least for a short while. In much the same way that she had learned to hold a sword before she could ride a bike, so too had she been put on a board the first time when she was just barely walking. With all the insanity of the world of her youth, her moms always tried to ensure that their girls had moments of normalcy. At least as much normalcy as one can have being raised on a magical powerhouse of an island that stood as the last bastion against the encroaching darkness of the Nothing. The cut and carve of a well waxed board weaving trails through curling waves was zen-like, a love she willingly shared with others, offering to teach any brave enough to paddle out with her with all the patience of a well versed instructor.

New, old, she exuded excitement for anyone taking the plunge with her and she gladly sat upon her board out near the line up spot, pointing out how to pick the best wave of the bunch. One of her favorite parts of surfing Seaside was how consistently good the surf was.

The sand between her toes, the salt air on her skin, the sun on her back, and the cold water washing over her body was the closest thing to Heaven that she had ever known. And she had no regrets about spending every moment she could there.

The waves were calling and she could not ignore them.

Later in the afternoon, once much of the surfing had wound down in favor of migrating to the beach for food and friends, Reign swapped from her suit to puka shell adorned beach attire; a halter crop, shorts, and a lightweight cover-up. No shoes, though. Nobody actually wants to put the 'sand' in sandals.

Sapphire showed up early and stayed as late as people were there (Jewell had possibly kicked her out of the house for the day).

She didn't hesitate to take off her shirt and shorts upon arrival, revealing the intricate web of scars on her body that had been turned into art with iridescent scale tattoos. She surfed, danced on the beach, lay in the sun, and ate her weight in food.

Dax Kincaid was up early and out with the dawn patrol at Seaside Beach looking to catch the first waves at sunup. There were few things better than a new board and fresh wax and Dax had both as he’d pulled the recently added Pyzel shortboard from his quiver and beaded it up with some fresh palo santo wax courtesy of Kassia Surf. There was a difference in being from Hawaii and being Hawaiian and it was a distinction that Dax knew well and respected. As part of the former and having been born on Kauai he’d adopted the culture of surfing as much as the culture had baptized him into his very own wave tribe. However it was spun, Kincaid had been born again in the impact zone at Kalapaki Beach. And that was the truth of it…it was as close to a religious experience as Dax had experienced. The sound of crashing water, the tidal pull of forces so much more powerful than he was, the serenity of dawns and dusks and the in betweens spent out on the water in nature’s church…it’d been a part of himself he’d locked away for a long time and was only just now beginning to rediscover. Keen to share in the rediscovered passion, he’d made sure to text Josette an invitation to continue her surfing lessons and see if he could pull her down from the stars and set her atop the waves for just a little bit.

He was quick with a welcoming smile and a shaka as he bobbed on his board in the line up as more people showed up for the party and the music and food began to take shape back on the beach. He’d big wave surfed all over the world, learned from shred heads from Bali to Voodoo to Mavericks and Ghost Tree, even Bells Beach, Australia for that 50 year storm, and of course Waimea, but wasn’t too bold to think he knew it all. Mother Nature had a way of grinding those types across some unforgiving coral. Consequently, he’d offer some tips, even some lessons to those who were interested, be they groms or kooks or barneys or quimbys. Turtle rolls and pop ups, leanbacks, cutbacks and pull ins to ride the pocket…he’d pass on what he’d learned, hard lessons and all, to any with interest. He’d learned patience a long time ago and eschewed a lot of the localism and tribalism that gave too many surfers a bad name so drop ins and snakes, when and if they happened, were tolerated with a shrug and smile. The ballerina would no doubt find her balance atop the board with the style and grace she was known for on stage and might even take a few all the way in. He’d also find time to drift into other’s lessons and listen to their style and key points before carving out some time for himself to carve through the break of several sets with the style and flair he was known for. He’d even try a few of those things he’d picked up from the other instructors!

As per usual, Kincaid would be one of the last to call it quits as he chased the adrenaline high till sunset and even a bit after. He’d always liked the stealth runs of dark water and a beacon of light on a black beach to target before finally giving in and giving over to that last wave syndrome and calling it a night. Fortunately, when he hit the beach there was good food and drink and a specific ballerina waiting for the Marine rather than a host of hostiles. The enticing (and traditional) Kalua pig had him trading his wetsuit for board shorts in no time to better enjoy the offerings, music and dance floor. Sleeved up with tattoos that also inked their way across his back and chest and spoke to both his past and his own unique art and tattoo style, Kincaid would find a warm spot of sand along Josie to enjoy the food, company, and Aloha spirit throughout the night.

Salvador arrived on the beach not long after sunrise, as it was one of his favorite paths for his morning runs. There he met up with the Hanks from the Matadero Carnicería, who were busy tending the pit for the Kalua style pork, under the helpful supervision of his chief of security Gallo Grande. After checking in with them and then Droet, he moved along to help set up the beach for the expected festivities.

As the sun rose higher in the sky, he traded out his running shoes for sandals and disposed of his shirt. He spent practically the entire day in the ocean, both on a surfboard and not, often seen barefoot while walking through the sand and nearly always in the company of his jewel Rekah and his kitten, the man named Gatito. His companion’s sunny disposition kept a smile on his face and his feline antics caused much wheezy laughter. Salvador also welcomed the engagement of other friendly faces, but it wasn’t until after sunset that he finally emerged from the shoreline to relax on the beach with his friends, family, and teammates.

Gatito arrived shortly after sunrise, accompanying Salvador. Like his companion, he was dressed for a run, but before he ventured off to enjoy that, he met up with Droet to discuss when Zariyah and some of the staff from Kitten’s Confections would be arriving with baked goods and other items that would be served with the Kalua pork later. He also pitched in to help get seating, surfboards, and other beach items set up and ready for the day’s festivities.

Later in the morning, he swapped his running gear for a swimsuit and a rash guard and took to the waves. He spent most of the day in the ocean, swimming and surfing. When he wasn’t out there in the water with Salvador and Rekah, he could be found checking on the status of the food, checking on the implements keeping everything at safe temperatures, and filling in where he was needed.

After sunset, he finally gave in to his more primal urges and changed so he could hunt for crabs. For at least an hour, a rare and beautiful clouded leopard could be seen storming the waves in search of prey (and sometimes chasing a Wildling). He could also be heard singing about his catches, yowling triumphantly as he presented angry crabs to his companion, friends, and family. Eventually, he slipped back into his manskin, and into some cut-offs and a tee, so he could relax with the people he loved while telling stories from the day.

Governor Driscol arrived in the afternoon to spend time with family and friends, and to support one of Rhy’Din’s local businesses! He was well rested and fashionably dressed in flip flops, white shorts, and an unbuttoned crane-patterned shirt. Though he was a little terrified of surfing, he was eager to give it a try with the help of some extraordinary teachers. The fact that his loving, supportive life partner, Rhys Germain, was in his company the entire time also did wonders to make him braver than usual.

After much delighted screaming in the ocean waves, he spent some time with Rhys milling around the beach and socializing with the populace. By then he was never seen without a drink in his hand, and he made certain to have at least one of everything while nibbling mostly on sweets. Once his hair was dry, he was happy to pose for photos and signed many autographs.

Later, his favorite dogsitter came by with the even more famous Gussie and Tommy. The wolfhound and setter were unleashed upon the sands, sent chasing after tennis balls and frisbees. For the low, low price of a treat they were even willing to pause for their adoring fans, happily accepting pets and also posing for pictures. Fortunately they were both well trained and well behaved, keeping away from food not meant for them.

As the sun began to set, Dris’ romantic heart could no longer keep him tethered to the festivities. He took Rhys by the hand and bid the party a fond farewell before embarking on a long walk along the shore with the love of his life. Their dogs trailed tiredly after them.

Rhys arrived at the seaside surfing party in the afternoon with Dris. Like his partner, he arrived wearing shorts and an unbuttoned shirt, but he traded that ensemble out for board shorts and a rash guard when it came time to surf. It had been many years since he had tried riding the waves and he wiped out several times, but after a while, he got the hang of it again.

When he and Dris were tuckered out from the waves, they came back to the beach to change clothes, sample the different tiki cocktails, and spend some time with family and friends, both old and new alike. Rhys made a point to try all of the vegetarian dishes on offer and was once heard asking if he could get the recipe for the tofu katsu—and the piña colada bars.

Once Gussie and Tommy joined him and Dris, Rhys spent a while playing frisbee with them. He even taught a few of the more daring kids in the crowd how to properly throw the frisbees, so they could get in on the action, too. He kept this up until just after dark when Dris came to retrieve him and lead him away on a long walk up the shore.

The Anvil would find himself drawn to sun, sand, and well less so surf. He rarely went to a depth he couldn't keep his feet on the ground. Still, it was a beautiful day, and his tan did require some freshening up.
