Colleen brought along boxty, Irish potato pancakes.

She wore a pair of black slacks and jacket along with festive Christmas red sweater. Her youngest children were spending the next couple of days with their sister and niece in Old Temple. Colleen was able to mingle and chatter with the others. She would likely make it somewhat early night, the previous day had been busy and was catching up with her.

Her gift to Rhys and Dris had been a smallish raid on her liquor storage and wine cellars.

Maggie brought several dozen chocolate oversized chocolate chip cookies and set the huge platter with the other food offerings. The excitement and activity of the last few days had caught up with her. By evening, she was found asleep on Gussie's settee. She snuggled against the dog's back with one arm draped over her. It was reminiscent of gatherings years ago when the now teenager was barely a toddler. In those days, Gussie would curl around the sleeping child much as she might have a pup of her own. Maggie was too tall for that now, but she would never be too tall for dog cuddles.

Benjamin showed up after noon, more or less, cheerfully bringing along a large crock of duck stew. Riding along with him was Pearl, the little white crow, which meant that Sass, his fennec fox, was under his sweatshirt. He let them off to play with Gussie, or maybe he was hopping Gussie would keep the two hooligans in line.

The Duck Stew:
Image
Dutch-Oven Duck
Ingredients
3 cups duck breast fillets cut into 1-inch cubes
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Olive or vegetable oil
1 large red onion roughly chopped
3 medium carrots roughly chopped
3 celery stalks roughly chopped
1 bell pepper any color, diced
3 to 5 cloves garlic minced
1 1/2 quarts beef or chicken broth
1 1/2 cups sweet potato peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
1 1/2 cups russet potato peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
3 cups sliced fresh mushrooms any variety
2 sprigs fresh rosemary

Instructions
Season the duck liberally with salt and pepper. Heat a thin layer of oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the duck and brown it evenly on all sides. Mix in the onions, carrots, celery, and bell pepper. Cook, stirring often, until onions are translucent.
Add the garlic and broth. Cover and simmer for 2 hours or until the meat is tender. Add the sweet potato, russet potato, mushrooms, and rosemary. Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes or until the potatoes are just cooked. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Serve with crusty bread.

The new Mrs. Shadowsoul arrived without her family, surprisingly, and was dressed simply in a red wrap dress that had a modest cut despite the way it accented her small waist. Her ever faithful guard was by her side, walking her through the party as her moral support.

When the Flameweaver made her way into the house, she would find Dris and Rhys giving them both a hug and apologizing for the absence of her family, citing a small emergency at home as an explanation. “Nothing to worry about, everything is fine! I just needed some air.”

At some point, maybe an hour or so after arriving, Sylista and Edward slipped away and headed home. Before she left, though, a gift would be placed near the others for the lovely couple who became fast friends with the vampire. Inside would be a sign to hang on a wall (if they wanted to!) that said “A house is not a home without love and music.” and a set of glasses for their drinks with their names etched into one each.

She might not have understood why this holiday was such a big deal, but the people looked happy and that made her smile.

Lena, Alin, and Brian joined their cousins on the upper levels of the Bistro in Old Temple with their Aunt Nicole. It was one of the rare times that she allowed the youngsters to work/play in her home kitchen. While the kids were all having their own Christmas fun and indulging their cousins' birthday party, Rhi and Eregor took some time to gather with the adults. Their gifts to Dris and Rhys were a pair of large patchwork quilts. One featured stitched images of musical instruments and the other, antique cars. They brought dessert, apple tarts.
