The scratching of the exacto blade tip against the desk beneath a photo as it was incised and the slow wheeze of breathing were the only sounds in the small room where the man lived. Hunched low over the desk as he worked the exacto cut through a turn, freeing the subject from the rest of the photo.

A fingertip, smattered with dry glue, lifted the subject up as he straightened in the chair. One of those smattered fingertips brushed gently across the face of the cut-out. The stoic line of lips spasmed into a smile as he whispered to it. “Perfect.”

He placed the cut-out face down on a small square of silk and carefully painted the back with glue. His gaze turned from the single picture to the mosaic a wall in his room had become. Carefully he placed the newest addition into its place and pressed. The last clean spot of fingertip ran slowly around the edges, catching any excess glue that might smear into the other pictures.

He backed away to take in the sight of his work. His eyes roamed from picture into picture into articles and into pictures again. “Almost there.”

The man returned to the desk. The remains of the last team photo swept into the trash with the others before he pulled a new one from a desk drawer. He hunched down over the photo.
