Challenge for Old Temple
To: The Honorable Baron Kalamere Ar'Din
From: Aristotle Kruger Allen, aka The Anvil
Excellency Kalamere;
In the course of human events, there comes a moment where some are raised above their peers. This of course has always been something that bothered me. I do acknowledge that you have earned your place, that the subsequent raising was done by the might of your sword arm. However, it has come to my attention that you have needed to defend your barony upon several occasions. To me this speaks of dissent among those who reside beneath your banner.
I am joining those who have come before me, and throwing down the gauntlet. Know that this challenge is not personal, but it is something I feel compelled to do. Let this serve as the notice a man of your station so properly deserves. While I am filled with a meager amount of trepidation, the eagerness to clash my weapons with yours outweighs any amount of common sense that would stay my hand.
Pick up that gauntlet valiant one, if you dare!
Cordially yours,
Aristotle Kruger Allen

Mr. Allen,
Congratulations on the challenge grant. Jake and I had discussed things over a pint the other night and given your enthusiasm for both the Arena and the Outback, I thought you made an excellent choice for him to bestow the gift to. I admit that I hadn't considered you might use the grant to come after my holdings, but I don't suppose that changes anything other than who I hope to see win the match.
I am given to understand you to be a more than competent smith. What would you say to adding your finest blade to the victor's takings in this contest. You win, you become the new baron of Old Temple and I'll pay you price and a half for the weapon. Lose, and the blade is mine free of charge.
Consider it. I'll send someone to visit the forge to discuss our schedules and inspect your wares.

Most Lofty Kalamere,
It is true that I am a smith. That you have heard of my talents as more than competent flatters me. I will not boast, and raise myself above those who share this trade. At best I will call my method different. That said, your wager intrigues me.
I will say that I have no finest blade, rather everything I create receives the same effort. I do carry stock items, these serve as replacement blades for those who need them now. I would counter with something customized to fit you. I'm certain that you of all people understand the difference in balance that can occur with even the smallest of increase or decrease in length. Is it not better to have a blade created to fit the fighter?
My offer then is this, I will put up not one but two weapons. One for you, crafted in whatever metal you choose. Forged in the style you most prefer, and enhanced in any way you need. The other is for your noble squire, made to fit her design specifications.
I am not seeking monetary compensation though. If you win, the weapons will be relinquished and I will go my own way. If I win, I will require a trip beyond the veil. I will be given access to the forges of the Fae realm, and be guided by your squire. My interest is purely educational, I am always wanting to learn more about my craft.
I do realize that you will need to confer with your squire. If she refuses, then perhaps we can find some other stakes to raise.
Humbly yours,
Aristotle Kruger Allen

The walk away from the baronial residence was quiet for Kruger. He’d been ready to ask to deliver his message to Jewell in person, but the tone of her missive had him handing the sealed letter to a servant. Would she know he’d been there? He supposed it didn’t matter now. When delivered she would break the seal and find the words he’d written, but there was no guarantee she would bother reading once she learned where it came from.
Sweetest Empress, Jewell of the night sky,
Your message left me hollow, though perhaps you should understand what it is that pulls the very essence out of me. My challenge may free that scepter from your hand. For that I am sorry. Not because it will, but because you cannot see as I do. I have looked upon you, carrying that scepter to battle. It does shine, yet I could barely see it for the perfection of the hand that held it. Its tarnished glow sat like a malignancy upon you. Can anything truly measure up to you?
You have become subject to Baron Kalamere, but is not your name Empress? Should not the entire world be kneeling before you and the scepter you bear be created for a goddess? I do not know what has brought your greatness so low as to need to be sheltered, but I loathe it for touching you. Such things were never meant to stand in your presence, let alone gain power over you. I am The Anvil, yet for all of that I am still just a simple smith. Whatever dirt this existence holds will eventually become trapped beneath my nails and embedded in hands that never seem to come clean. I accept what I am, and will shine as brightly as one of my station can.
You are the Jewell of the night sky, the North Star set in a place of power and meant to guide us all. Do not fall from your place, do not look to me and see anything more than a pebble beneath the heel of your shoe. That is as it should be, and if it has become less than that I will do my best to be the pebble that raises you once more to your rightful throne.
Faithfully,
The Anvil

Mr. Allen,
I am afraid that your terms are unacceptable. As with any smith worth their salt, I fully expected a custom made weapon to be superior to anything pre-crafted, whether it is a show piece or a replacement blade for those who need them. My intent was to make it a bit more interesting for your own side, without sinking either of us into a financial hole.
That said, I cannot, or perhaps simply will not, wager the talents and time of Miss Ravenlock. Naturally you are welcome to speak with her yourself and form some other wager if she is open to it. I would caution you to tread carefully in your desires to visit the Sidhe, however. I don't doubt that there is great knowledge to be obtained, but the cost and risk of obtaining it may be steep. That's no business of mine of course, travel where you will. As I cannot personally provide this service, however, it is an unacceptable form of wager.
In regard to our other conversation as to dates and times, I believe we are now settled on Thursday the 1st of May, beginning at 8:30. I have retained the services of the infamous piRATe to officiate the match. With or without some other wager, I look forward to meeting you in the ring.

Baron Ar'Din,
Knowledge will always come with a price, the greater the knowledge the higher the cost. This has been known to me since I was first apprenticed. I wish sometimes that I could be satisfied with what I have already gained. To say that for me the knowing holds greater value than my own life's blood would be accurate. There is no danger I wouldn't face to know more. This was the place from which my offer came.
I understand your position, and fear not there is still a trip to Sidhe in my future. Do not worry over my financial well being. It is true that some materials cost more than others, the true value to my weapons though has always been my time. There is of course a certain amount of prestige that comes from having a blade in the hands of reputable fighters. Knowing that in most cases the weapon will live on, passed down as heirloom or taken as spoils, is the desire of every weapon maker.
Service for knowledge is still my preference, though I can tailor what I desire. I am seeking a specific set of treasures, I will not put those here. Paranoia makes me believe that missives of this sort are always subject to reading by unintended eyes. There is little need to worry over what they might be if I have not won my challenge. Understand that I am not asking you to quest after them, I simply need to know where they lie. I suppose it goes without saying that I am not worried over the price of a pair of weapons because the gain of these treasures will negate the cost over time.
I look forward to our contest on Thursday.

So many challenges tonight! It was a triple header with one challenge in each sport, and all of them involved someone from the Badside Brawlers!
I got lucky and called the one between Kalamere and Kruger! BOY was this an exciting close match! Jake sure knows who's a rising star and who isn't, and Kruger did great against one of the best in the Arena!
But in the end, Kalamere had the edge and successfully defends his barony! And Grace and I, FINALLY, got some taquitos. Thanks Lindy!
