[DoM4} Retool Style Points

Post by Scorched Druid »

I know we're still discussing my resubmission along with the Super Modifier thread. However I remembered something we used to do in DoM but stopped. I've all ready mentioned this to Neo and Harris as

This trend started with Random and Lem took up the flag for a while after him.

Style Points were something granted to duelists for specific round results. e.g. Wizard Blade over Reflect, Ghost Form over Elemental Fury, Foul Fog over Arcitc Blast. Simply put, you scored with Style or Flourish. An encouragement to be outlandish.

At the time, duelists accumulated so many Style Points and were given rewards at the end of a month/cycle based on who had the most SP.

By all rights these could be retooled into a FORM of modifier for DoM that's not listed on the standings but that builds up during DUELS like a Power Meter. Meaning Apprentices could use these since they are generated by Round Results, not Rank.

How would these work? Simple. 2 Style Points = 1 Empowered Spell. To keep scores simple, an SP Spell will add .5 to the normal value of the spell. SPMB vs WB would be a Full instead of a half. SPSH vs FT would be Full. SPGF vs EF would be 1pt, SPMS over SH 1.5pts. You accumulate Style Points for certain round results, but need a minimum of 2 to activate. No more than 4 generated at once. They work they work, they don't? you start all over. Strategy is rewarded, mistakes are punushed.

For an example on how it could be role played, think of the Style Points as that little bit held back from your characters casting. Like storing energy to add it to another spell later. Siphoning magic/mana/energy from your own spells and saving it.

Here is a mock duel example

Duelist 1(App)/ Duelist 2(Mage)

Round 1. MB/RF 1-0 D2 (0-1SP)
Round 2. DP/WB 1-.5 D2 (0-1SP)
Round 3. FF/AB 1.5-1 D1 (1-1 SP)
Round 4. FT/MS 2.5-1 D1 (2-1 SP)
Round 5. DP/FF 2.5-2 D1 (2-1 SP)
Round 6. MW/RF 3-2.5 D2 (2-2 SP)
Round 7. SPMB/SPNR 4.5-4 D2 (0-0 SP)
Round 8. SH/RF 5-4 D2 (0-0 SP)

Reflecting MageBolt/Mind Whip = 1 Style Point, Foul Fogged an Arctic Blast + 1 Style Point. Fear Touching a Meteor Shower = 1 Style Point.

These are earned through specific Matrix Interactions.

I really would like Lem, or even Random to come out and comment here. Might be on to something with this as it is more of a Fighting Game Mechanic than Neo's modifier position, it does level the playing feeled between Mage and App. And Style Points are something we all ready had implemented some time ago, no one has used them in a while is all.

Perhaps this idea COMBINED with my other may be something for truly deep analysis and testing.

Thoughts?

Just add a side thought.

This proposed system as a form of modifier continues the trend of keeping all 3 sports different. DoS has Fancies, DoF has Feints. This is a Modifier open to all ranks. Something the other two do not offer.

And by limiting it to only 4 Style Points at one time. Any Offensive Spell can only earn you 2 full points and any Defensive can only earn 1.5, since 2 SP adds .5 to the spell value.
