Probably because it's his first challenge.
Probably because it's his first Barony.
Probably because he hadn't made a big deal about saying the Barony was his way to the Overlord.
Probably because he's not as big an ass as some others.
Probably because he hasn't shown a pattern of using Baronies for that purpose. (See first two reasons)
Should it become a case of regular using the Baronies only as a reason to challenge for the Overlordship, something I note you've taken a break from it seems, then he would start being accused of using it as a stepping stone.
What I miss, however, is reasons for challenge. Saying "I've challenged Damien" without saying why cries out to me as simply being "I challenge cause I can." which is a reason I never could abide by. You'll note that by the complete lack of "Good Luck" responses appearing on the challenge.

First we had Max who, during the past Overlord challenge, retired his Barony because he was afraid of losing it to Cas. Now we have Gork who doesn't seem at all excited about his challenge to Damien because it's "not like he's going to win anyway." (And contrary to what you've made it appear, Gork, you don't have to challenge for Overlord if you won't want to. Some go their entire dueling career without challenging for it.)
Since when did unconfidence become so rampant an epidemic among title holders? And since when is challenging for Overlord not a big deal?
