Perhaps I should be surprised you didn't let me know while we were in the ring this evening of your intent. I know you better than to think this feeling to challenge me, in particular, again, just came out of the blue. Ironically, this comes once again while the Warlord Tourney is looming.
In my absence, I have become a better dueler. Not because I know I will win more, but because I know myself more. Come at your own risk, and come after what I have been fighting with and for, for nearly six years now. Becoming this has not been easy, and I plan to have the six years of struggle and blood meet you in one night at the ring.
I truly hope you have some cause or ideology behind your challenge; I truly hope you have a respect for the 10th ring, and I truly hope you know what you are fighting for when you seek to take this ring of rich history from me... because win or lose, that's the only thing that truly leaves with you when you step out of the ring.
That, and I don't want you wasting my time fighting just because you want to make a name for yourself.
Format matters not to me. I've left that option to Arithon and Cletus in the past, and so I will offer the same to you once we gather at the challenge.
I've been challenged by "friend" and foe over the past six years. Bring your convictions with you, because it's the "why" and not the "who" that matters to me anymore.

Perhaps he did not let you know because he was so shocked to see you in a ring.
I am amused by your indignation and curious as to why you wouldn't expect to be challenged considering you have not even bothered to step inside the Arena this cycle. I would have hoped this challenge would come much sooner. You call on Max to show respect for the sport when you have showed little these last few months. Instead of an apology for your absence, the community is assaulted with your self-righteous whimpering. There is no rich history of the Tenth. All there is in the history of that ring is your obsession.
Max, please remove this ring from his hands once and for all.

Arane,
Like I said, I don't care who challenges me anymore, only that they better have a reason for it.
The reason that matters is because of this notion that people don't find the barony valuable. The reason behind this lack of value is because nobody has a reason to challenge anymore. When was the last time someone challenged for the 2nd because AJ had 12 defenses? When was the last time someone challenged for the 6th because Avery acquired the ring 6 weeks after he started?
Sheesh, who was the last baron who actually cared that they were challenged, besides when your husband challenged me? People are so bored with the rings that they beg to be challenged. That, Arane, is a terrible disservice to the ring. They have turned the ring into a chore, instead of loving it for its history, and recognizing the warriors who have fought for the rings.
Regarding my absence... I'm sorry, but that's just not your business. People step away from the Arena all the time for countless reasons, some need a break. They don't owe an apology to the community when they have done no disservice to it.
As for the ring being my "obsession," I will give you a brief history.
Back in 1998, the Warlord Tourney held in May had six prizes: the 4th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and the Overlord challenge. I lost to Leto and Darkness in that tourney to be eliminated. Leto took the 10th and Darkness took the 11th. I wanted to challenge someone, in my young, stupid stage, and I chose to challenge someone who defeated me, because that would be the greatest challenge; to defeat someone who defeated me. I chose Leto. I won.
Agrenish challenged me first and won. Agrenish was the first to defend the 10th, that against Unagi. I didn't see Agrenish as honorable, so I challenged him, but I also liked the idea of defeating he who defeated me before. I won, and I further defended the ring against Agrenish again, then Lupton challenged me, then I lost to Drakewyn. I challenged her in return and defeated her... once again, I defeated the one who defeated me, what I consider to be a challenge in overcoming the past.
The same happened with Mornlythe. He beat me, I beat him. But then I lost to Damien Mortis, although I never had the chance to issue challenge again since he retired the ring two days after he beat me. However, I defeated him in the Warlord tourney to reacquire the 10th Ring.
Things got even more difficult against Cas, because he had defeated me several times in a row before he defeated me again in the challenge he issued to me. He became the third person to defend the 10th ring, this time against Lorance. I came back almost ten months later to reacquire the 10th ring.
Arithon was even tougher, because I had beaten him maybe thrice out of the 12-15 times we've dueled. Again, he beat me. I came back a couple months later to beat him.
Then came your husband, and I successfully defended the 10th ring for the first time in nearly five years, the one before him being Lupton.
Now if you wish not to like me, that's fine. I'm not here for you to like me. I am here because I care about the histories, and I feel lucky to be a part of such an awesome history that is six years in the making. It feels awesome not because I have won the 10th ring 7 times, now. It feels awesome because I have overcome my past failures in the most tense situations 7 times.
It's not my history. It is the 10th's history; I just happen to be a large part in it. To me, the 10th represents redemption. Like I said, I won't take kindly if Max simply seeks to make a name for himself; he better bring meaning to the 10th ring, because I have six years of meaning I'm bringing to him.

There were a time when I were holdin' a Ring an' took some time away from th' Arena. There were things thet needed tae be done thet were much more important tae me then duelin', so I did 'em.
When someone got around tae noticin' thet I weren't around, people came out o' th' woodwork tae take thet Ring from me. Eventually, I lost th' Ring... nae in a duel, but because someone whined.
Var... I's hopin' ye beat Max in a perfect shut-out. I've nothin' against Max; but when Arane cheers against ye fer reasons thet are dumb as usual, I'll stand by ye proudly.

On the evening of the first of June, Warlord Max Blue pressed challenge against Baron Var Medici-Giovanni for the right to wear the Tenth Ring. The Warlord was seconded by Baron of the First, Cletus Ganderfald, and his Lady of Honor was Altara d'Poison. He dueled under the legendary jade and black banner of Atrebla. The Baron was seconded in absentee by his son, Noble Medici-Giovanni, and his Lady of Honor was Noelle Medici-Giovanni.
Violence began shortly into the first duel in a best of three confrontation as Var landed a high attack to gain the first point. Max replied shortly after with a lunge to tie up the duel. The pair traded points for several rounds, keeping the match very close. In the tenth round, Max scored with a sudden lunge to gain himself a half point lead over Var's 3.5 points. Max quickly followed that up with a low attack, scoring himself the final point and giving the Warlord the win. The Warlord bested the baron, 5-3.5 in 11 rounds.
In the second duel, it was the Warlord to establish an early lead by putting a stop to the Baron's early offense. A quick volley of points followed -- an mutual exchange, a lunge that scored in Var's favor, followed by another mutual exchange. With the score tied at 3 a piece, Max avoided Var's lunge, gaining himself a full point and a point lead over Var. After wasting several rounds avoiding each other, Var managed to land another lunge to tie the score up again. Max rounded Var's defensive move but it wasn't enough to get the win and Var replied as Max had in the last duel. A full point defensive move and a low blow through this challenge into a third duel as Var brought down Max, 5-4.5 in 12 rounds.
The deciding match began on a different tone than the previous two; perhaps because the Warlord and Baron were beginning to tire from their two long previous duels. Max became the first to score by lunging in over Var's low attack. Over the next three rounds, Var managed to tie up the score by defending against Max's attacks. Then the Baron took the lead by taking a risk with a timely strike through Max's defense. Max answered with a return blow high in the eight round. However, it would be his last chance to respond to Var's offensive. With the score tied at two a piece, Var began to mount momentum in the next four rounds which ended in a low and then high blow to end the match. The Baron defeated the Warlord, 5.5-2 in 12 rounds.
Thus, Var Medici-Giovanni defended his right to hold the Tenth Baronial Ring.
