Halloween Event: A Tale of Witches and Vampires!

Post by Royal »

Twilight Isle Halloween
A Tale of Witches and Vampires

The twilight sky of the isle has begun to fade as a veil of darkness sweeps over much of the land.
The cries of bats, the laughter of ghouls and ghosts, and the howling of roaming beasts can be heard.
Keep close to the lit pumpkin lanterns along the many paths of the Isle..
for who knows what awaits those who venture into the darkness.

Oddly enough, there are two who seem to know exactly what is going on.

"It is those pests from Duskside!" exclaimed a woman wearing a rather large witches hat.

"As loathed as I am to admit that she is right.. indeed, the realm of Dread has invaded. The Ghostly Pranksters are at it again. We must act swift, or else this land will dwell in terror forever." spoke a caped fellow some feet away at the witches right. His cold demeanor interrupted by a goblin tugging at his cape, which caused the man to bare his fangs briefly before pulling the fabric away.

"I have developed," - "We have developed.." - "Yes, WE have developed a means to draw in the Dread Energy and transmute it into harmless Halloween Energy! But we are in need of your help!"

In the witching hour, Josie heard the news and donned a pair of jeans and a t-shirt that read:

“We are the granddaughters of the witches you couldn’t burn.” -Tish Thawyer

Then she promptly went on her way to the Willow Way Community Garden to see about a few Cinderella pumpkins!

Xanth was standing near the Duel of Magic board, reading about the Halloween Vampire/Witch competition. His silent (in name, not volume)
partner, Lord Adantierre was standing next to him. The vampiric lord turned his red-tinged eyes from the board to look at Xanth, his continuous smirk turning to a concerned frown. He managed to gesture to the board with one hand while keeping aloft his goblet of bloodwyne in the other.

"SURELY, Lord Xanth, I can count on your support for this most OBVIOUS cause, can I not?"

Alright, alright. Xanth replied grumpily, not really caring either way, but wanting to join any kind of magical competition regardless.
He signed up for the Vampires.

Salvador stood and stared up at the veil darkened sky, brow furrowed as he listened to the wayward whispers that passed on the wind. A rustling of dried leaves stirred just under the collar of his coat. It was almost as if his newly acquired familiar were translating for him. Or perhaps telling him an echo of the tale.

Witches. Vampires. Who do you side with?

A soft, secret smile broke the surface of his expression, and his fingers grazed a nostalgic touch over his hip.

"Vampires," he murmured to the wind. "Always vampires."

Turning his face away from the sky, he crossed the sands to add his name to the list of those supporting vampires.

Whispers came to the Archmage via the voices of the dead. As was her custom, Maggie tilted her head to listen as the spirits were generally of those had been smaller than herself. "Witches," was her single word answer.

The young spirit asked in excited tone, "Do you think the Spooky Staff will be lent out again?"

"Perhaps." Maggie smiled thoughtfully. "Let's visit the gardens, shall we?"

"And the cairn, too?"

"Not today."

"Then I'll stay with the others if that's all right."

Maggie first stopped at the Keepers' Garden to check on Clover the Second and Mayflower's language learning session. While the drake collected honey from the beehive, Mayflower had been helping her to understand simple phrases in Kittish. When Clover finished her tasks, she would return home as normal. The spirit child remained with them as Maggie moved on.

The next stop was the trolley station and community garden in the Canopy. The gnomish woman that often wandered through the Halflight Hallow had given her a miniature key and a quest. That tiny key, along with the ever growing collection of bracelet charms that commemorated various events of her life, was worn on her right wrist. At one of the corners of the garden, Maggie spotted a glowing light that reminded her of the lights inside her sister's dollhouse when the room lights were dimmed. She crouched and studied the key and tiny crack of light. What would she find if the key fit?

Dris stood at the notice board drumming his fingers against his mouth with indecision.

"Witches? Vampires? How the devil am I to choose!?" The bard threw his hands up in dismay, that instantly turned into an idea, and he snapped his fingers before slapping his hands back to his sides. "I've got it!"

The recently retired former Governor dug in his pockets until he found a coin. "Of course, there's only one way to decide!" He held the coin up, balanced between his two foremost fingers and turned his hand one way then the other. It was a perfectly minted gold coin with a face in profile on one side and some national mark stamped on the other. Heads, and tails.

"Hats go on heads, so it's heads for witches and tails for vampires," he declared. "Here we go." Then he gave the coin a flip off his thumb, sending it spinning high into the air. As it came back down, he snatched it into his hand and slapped it down flat over the back of his other.

He held it there. A few nearby goblins were curiously leaning forward with anticipation. Bending over his own hand, he lifted it just a little and peeked. The goblins shuffled closer.

"Heads it is!" he announced, suddenly tossing his hand up and revealing the coin resting on the back of his other hand. Giving the coin a little bounce, he lightly tossed it up off the back of his hand and caught it, then flipped it off his thumb to send it spiraling in an arc toward the nearest goblin. The whole lot of them dove for the coin and immediately started squabbling over it, kicking up a cloud of dust that Dris strode away from.

Humming a merry tune, Dris signed his name on the list in support of witches, and then turned about to be on his way.

Rachael pondered over the decision to align with one side or the other in the Halloween Event while she stood in the living room of Number Six Willow Way. A pair of kittens circled her black leather booted feet. The little black kitten wore a black and red pepper print do-rag along with his bling and a black and red cape, and the little yellow tabby kitten wore a green witch's hat atop of her usual clouded leopard fleece beanie.

A rare smile curved her usually stern lips while she observed her grandkittens at play. "Which side do you wish moi to be on?" she inquired of the pair.

"Gramma is the bestest witchie," Mayflower declared.

"Yeah!" Pepper nodnodnodded in agreement with his Big Sis.

"Oui, very well then." She gently picked up the pair and gave each a fond kiss to their noses before she deposited them on their paws and left Number Six with the intent to head to the corkboard to make her choice official.

A piece of thick white parchment was affixed to the corkboard with a black and gold pushpin. Her choice was written in black ink in a precise, left handed script. Her black and gold wax seal with the impression of a panther's head was at the bottom of the parchment.

I choose to align with the side of the Witches.

--Rachael Blackthorne.

"What?" Kruger looked over his shoulder, having heard the question but believing he'd misunderstood. "Witches, or Vampires? That hardly seems like a fair choice... I mean I'd likely have included some of the others. Where are the Demons and Necromancers?" He was talking just to hear himself talk, that or he was thinking about which he would fight for.

"Vampires, always Vampires."

Eregor considered the options and, feeling a touch of irony, made his choice.

"Vampires."
