Riverfront Summer Fair, courtesy of the Adia Estate

Coinciding with the midsummer parties popping up across the City, the Adia Estate is throwing a Riverfront Barbecue on the estate grounds.

Just east of the walls of the Adia Homestead, the Alflight River flows gently north until it merges with the Tiamori River many miles to the north-northeast. This stretch of river is calm and sedate. Far from its headwaters to the south, Alflight is spared the frequent floods and rapids of her more northern cousins, fed by the colder mountains and their seasonal melts.

Along the riverside, canopies, pavilions, and bounce houses of all kinds went up to provide shade and space for guests. A central pavilion is set up serving barbecue and cold drinks freely for anyone who visits, but plenty of space is available for anyone to bring their grills, smokers, ovens, instakitchens, and whatever else they wish to use for cooking. A tent is also set up for Adia Reserve Tea Farms to offer teas of all sorts, iced and hot, traditional and herbal, with a coffee bar also available courtesy of Endless Nights Café and Apothecary.

Two beaches stretch along a generous length of the river, north and south of the main event space. Visitors can play Ultimate Frisbee, dig holes, and swim to their heart’s content. Between the beaches, the shore line rises slightly, giving the perfect stretch for riverfront docks to service boats and watercraft. Space is limited and unavailable for large craft to dock, but is available for public use.

At twilight, visitors will be treated to a modest fireworks display over the water, and a very large screen will be set up for a viewing of Wall-E, Godzilla 1954, and Ghostbusters. Those who wish to stay nearby overnight can make use of one of several camp grounds set aside in the woods at the edge of the Estate, or book a room at the Village Center Inn in the village of New Thendozal, just west of the walled estate on the north-south road between the City and the lands to the south.

Rumor has it that local youths from the village are planning a bonfire somewhere nearby in a small clearing within the safe zone of the Wilds secured by the Estate. If any can find it, it is said that it will last through through the night and into first light, providing revelry and partying for those who desire a less sedate and more free-spirited end to their celebrations. There are no fliers for it and no word on official programs. Only whispers to be heard by the right people.

Having heard about a festival with barbecue in his neck of the woods, the primordial forest deity known as Farwolaeth (Wally to his friends) decided to make an appearance. Determined to make a good impression, he donned a collared shirt for the occasion; but knowing the hot weather and that there’d be water, he wore practical, comfortable new shoes and convertible zipper pants so that he’d be ready for any occasion.

Even seven-foot-tall skeletal deer-skull-headed gods worried about overheating and wet clothes sometimes, however irrationally.

Determined to provide support, he came prepared with a cooler of meat and non-meat alternatives to grill, as well as refreshing drinks!

With him was his constant companion, the labradoodle named Mr. Toodles, who had a very beautiful bandana.

Throughout his stay, Farwolaeth grilled for people, passed out drinks, made sure people were hydrating, supplied sunscreen and applied bug spray on request, and introduced people to Mr. Toodles.

Kira was on hand the entire day, helping coordinate vendors and guests who rented space, manning the tea stand, and mingling amongst visitors to ensure things ran smoothly. To that effect, she dressed comfortably. She had not anticipated a particularly large turnout, but when requests came in for space to set up booths, pavilions, counters, and cooking stands, she was more than happy to have listened to the advise of friends and assistants in planning for more space. At worst, they said, everyone would have plenty of shade.

Event staff was in hand to assist in jobs throughout the event, most of them younger people from the village looking for a few easy nobles. Kira worked them harder than they may have thought they’d get away with, but they were paid more than fairly and enough were on hand for regular breaks and ensured they were well fed and hydrated.
