2022 Rhydin Pride Kickoff Party

Post by BardGallant »

After painting the town in multiple hues on the morning of June 12th, hop a portal from the Governor's Mansion, the Red Dragon Inn, or anywhere in between and come on out to #11 Twilight Lagoon in the Gloaming District on Twilight Isle to join the Double Dukes Drhys in celebrating the start of Rhydin's very own 2022 Pride Week!

Rhydin is a melting pot of cultures and peoples from various dimensions and worlds. Many immigrants come from places where they were persecuted for being true to themselves and their hearts. The Double Dukes themselves are among those who fled such horrific pasts and found a more welcoming community here in this world, and are happy to share in the joy and gratitude this week long event embraces. A rainbow podium has been set out on the front steps of the mansion where guests are encouraged to give speeches on why Pride is important to them.

Don't like giving speeches? Don't sweat it! A table has been set aside with colorful paper and plenty of writing utensils which guests can use to write down their reasons why celebrating Pride is important to them. Dris will be happy to read them to the gathering crowds throughout the day! Even those wishing to remaining anonymous by not signing their names. Participation is absolutely optional.

All visitors will be given their very own commemorative gold coin for stopping by the end of the rainbow to celebrate at the kickoff! There will be plenty of treats and beverages to refresh yourself with after a long night of labors, including a specially baked enormous rainbow cake! This cake is dedicated to the memory of one of the Rainbow Roads painting squad's founding members, Ed Smith, but it also serves to celebrate the liberation of everyone who has come to Rhydin and found the joy and freedom to be who they are without fear of discrimination.

Finally, before leaving, guests are encouraged to stop by and pick up or craft their very own personalized Pride flags to take with them on their adventures throughout the rest of the week! The Double Dukes Drhys have collected every individual flag conceivable. A helpful magical associate is standing by to help visitors mix and match and merge any combinations of their choosing as well.

This event kicks off at 9 AM and continues all day long and well into the night, just like every other Perpetual House Party the Double Dukes have ever thrown! Come one, come all, and kick off the week in style!

(( This is a board only event that is open to everyone! Please post your participation here! Have your character give a speech or write a letter as to why Pride is important to them, if you like. Just outfits are great as well! Don't forget to have your character pick up a flag to take with them to wave during the parades to follow! The above image shows only a few of the flags available. Here is at least one helpful guide containing many more: Sexuality Flags & LGBT+ Symbols: The Ultimate Pride Guide. Thank you and enjoy! Happy Pride Month, everyone! ))

In addition to the enormous rainbow birthday cake, the Dukes have provided a colorful menu of finger foods for their guests to enjoy:

fried pickle spears
jalapeño poppers (with pork or veggie bacon)
mac ’n’ cheese bites
veggie pinwheels
rainbow vegetable flatbreads

sliders in a variety of flavors, including:
classic cheeseburger (with beef or vegan patties)
pineapple-teriyaki chicken burger
blackened salmon burger
chipotle black bean burger

rainbow vegetable fries
sweet & spicy rainbow slaw
rainbow crudités
tortilla and root vegetable chips

a rainbow of dips, including:
blue miso-yogurt dip (colored with spirulina)
roasted purple carrot and sweet potato hummus
tropical guacamole
cheddar queso dip
roasted red pepper and feta dip
fresh homemade salsa

And of course, they’ve also provided more sweets, in addition to the enormous rainbow birthday cake, because one can never have enough sugar:

rainbow chip white chocolate blondies with rainbow ganache
rainbow swirl cheesecake bars
rainbow candy bark
rainbow-dipped chocolate strawberries
rainbow fruit skewers with sweet chocolate and cheesecake dips
rainbow popsicles

And finally, it’s not a Germain-Driscol party without some kind of alcohol involved. Keeping with the rainbow theme, guests can enjoy:

rainbow paradise cocktails
rainbow vodka lemonade slushies
color-changing margaritas
out and proud cocktails
rainbow sangria

But the Dukes have not forgotten their younger visitors and others who don’t want to drink alcohol. Guests who don’t wish to imbibe can enjoy:

rainbow sherbet floats
rainbow fruit spritzers
sparkly unicorn lemonade
fruity rainbow ice cubes to spruce up any drink

And if none of those are appealing, the Dukes have brought in a slushy machine so guests can make the sweet, fruity rainbow slushies of their dreams.

After getting their bellies full, personalizing their preferred pride flags, and listening to (and perhaps giving!) speeches, guests are encouraged to commemorate the start of Pride Week 2022 in a lasting way: with photos. The Dukes have brought in a vintage-style photo booth that combines old-school nostalgia with modern features, and dozens of colorful, pride-themed props. These kiosks print photo strips on the spot, but guests will also receive their photos and gifs by email, and receive a link to their online gallery after the party.

Dris emerged from a nap after a long night of painting the Rainbow Roads, wearing exactly the same clothes he had been wearing then and at his challenge the night before. They were a bit cleaner now. Not quite so ink-stained, but definitely splattered in other multiple colors. The bard was the first to step up on the rainbow colored podium Sunday morning to address the crowd.

Naturally, he was all smiles.

“Good morning, guys, gals, and non-binary pals. Welcome to the Gloaming and the first day of Rhydin Pride Week! Rhys and I are elated to have you all here at our home here on Twilight Isle. I see some of you are still paint splattered from last night’s sanctioned citywide graffiti. As am I.”

With a laugh, Dris gestures down at himself. There are still some ink stains on his shorts as well as colorful splotches on his white tank top. After taking a moment to pose and smile, he leans back into the podium.

“So we set up this podium here, and that’s as clear a sign as any to expect some speeches. This podium is for you, all of you. We’ll be leaving it up all day and night should any of you muster up the courage and fancy taking a turn at telling us what makes Pride special and important to you. That’s why I’m here. Someone has to be the first, am I right?”

Quiet laughter rolls through the crowd. Dris clears his throat, and smiles broadly as he leans casually on the podium, but after a moment his expression turns more serious.

“I hear a lot of talk about how ‘this is Rhydin,’ the world of acceptance. Gay, straight, crooked, or bent. Every person is warmly embraced for who they are here, no matter what. ‘Why do we even need a Pride?’ people ask.

“‘Let’s not forget,’ I tell them, as I am telling you now. Let’s not forget that Rhydin is a realm of immigrants, too, many of whom have come here from much less accepting worlds. Worlds where they were persecuted, threatened, abused, and yes even killed for daring to be who they are instead of who their worlds told them they should be.

“I am one of those people. I am a Rhydin immigrant. The world I came from many years ago was not at all as welcoming and supportive as this realm is to me. Where I came from I could not openly hold my partner’s hand or kiss him in public the way I do here.”

Dris reaches back and Rhys steps up to clasp his hand. The bard looks over his shoulder with a warm smile, his eyes shining with an abundance of love reflected from deep within his soul. To further demonstrate, he pulls Rhys forward to share a sweet, chaste kiss with him. There are awws from the crowd, and he looks back at them with a smile that starts to turn a little sad.

“I could not have done that in the world where I came from. Strange circumstances brought me here, to Rhydin, as I have heard is the case for many of our other citizens as well. It took me a while to realize that my life was not at risk here, and over time I blossomed and opened up. The man I am on the inside is now happily and proudly the man I reveal to you on the outside, and I am grateful every day that I live for fate bringing me here, to Rhydin. Where I am safe to be the man I am and free to love the man I love.

“And yet I never forget. I look out on the faces here today and I can see the same haunted eyes I once had mixed among you. Some of you, like me, have come from less accepting worlds. Look beside you to your neighbors, your friends and family, those both of blood and those we have found to make as our own. Look in those eyes, and remember.

“Life for us was harder once. Many of us lived lies every single day, pretended to be what we are not, just to survive, to get by, to last one day longer until eventually we found our way here. To Rhydin. A freer and more accepting world. A world full of love as much as its own share of different dangers. But at least here the dragons are only going to eat you because you are tasty, and pair well with ketchup, not because of the person you were born to be.

“Thank you all for coming, for embracing yourselves as you are and supporting your loved ones as they are. May you live long, loud, and proud as you, safe and free. Happy Pride Week, Rhydin! Never forget! You are loved!”

Dris brings his hands together, kisses his fingertips, and throws his love out into the crowd. Then he turns and steps down from the podium to make way for the next speaker.

The bard was of course seen throughout the rest of the day, mingling with the crowds and making merry, always in the company of his life partner Rhys Germain. Whenever an opportunity to indulge in a photo occurred, he was definitely there. Occasionally one might have spotted him nibbling on some of the fare, but he hardly stopped to take the time to eat, passing off have gnawed snacks to Rhys to finish for him. He drank many of the rainbow slushies, especially with alcohol. He shook hands, shared hugs, and happily gossiped with anyone who came his way. He also made certain to remind everyone about the upcoming Dragon's Gate Block Party scheduled for Friday evening, in addition to all the other magnificent Pride events scheduled for the week.

At some points here and there he had slipped off to go shopping in the Twilight Market, returning to show off his finds before stowing them away in the mansion. He made sure also to remind everyone that they were welcome to stay the night. #11 Twilight Lagoon had plenty of rooms! The last thing he made sure to remind people about before making himself scarce from the property was that the Duel of Magic Summer 2022 All Ranks Tournament was about to get started. Dris disappeared promptly at 7:30 to make his way over to the dueling rings so that he could participate, promising to drop back in afterward to continue partying and that he would of course see people throughout the week elsewhere at other events.

After a long and hilarious ride through town and into the Twilight markets and Gloaming... Candy and streamers and t-shirts were tossed from the carriage, along with strings of colorful beads and packets of flower seeds, Mist directed the two faux unicorns to the Gloaming District.

He spent a long moment regarding the cake commemorating Ed, his gaze wistful, his features pensive and sad. But he finally took a piece of the cake to eat, quiet and absorbed into memories.

He finally stepped to the podium and gave a smile, sweet and warm.

"I don't remember when we decided that we needed to do something fun. I didn't know it was Ed's birthday, or that it was Pride week. But the next thing I knew, Amaris was insisting on rainbow paint and ... well. Here we all are."

He paused and laughed softly, remembering that strange night.

"I don't remember my homeland. I remember where I was raised and created, and I know, I was never to be anyone. I was to be a tool, a construct, a living machine. When I got here, I'm not really sure how, I realized that I could be who I wanted to be. Slowly. It took a long time for me to know that."

Another pause, and he picked up a pretty fruity drink to wet his throat before speaking again.

"So. If you're not ready to be who you are, who you want to be, don't worry. There's always time. And there's always someone to talk to who understands. Always choose love."

With a flicker of smile, Mist stepped down. He headed for the food and made a pig of himself, of course, and gladly joined into talking, singing, dancing; often proudly showing off his daughter Amaris whenever she couldn't escape him.

Mist never really learned what the flags meant, and ended up taking the ones he thought were pretty, including the lesbian, genderqueer, and pansexual. Amaris would get him set straight... in a manner of speaking.

Vrrrooomm! Jackie rolled in with her pals and promptly hit the buffet! It'd been a long night of painting and carting, after all!

She had her best goth-a-billy dress on and she did actually go to the stage to talk, but it was just a few words...

"I was born here, and we all know, Rhydin is for everyone. So enjoy being you!"

Rare sightings of Salvador Delahada were seen at the the Double Dukes kickoff party. Draped over one arm was a gray, black, white, and green colored bit of fabric that he explained had come from a shop in Twilight Market, if asked. He was in the company of his gatito, of course, who had helped him discover some new words for his identity and a better appreciation for the week long festival than, as a native Rhydin resident, he had ever had before. The Keeper/Opal decided to make an appearance to support his unofficial step-dad and other out and proud friends and family members. He did not make a speech nor write his thoughts down on any note cards. As the evening trickled in, he found a comfortable, quiet room with a television to watch a live broadcast of the Summer 2022 All Ranks Tournament, but may have fallen asleep under the weight and warmth of his draped companion less than halfway through.

The gatito was out bright and early to help Dris and Rhys get everything (namely, the food) set up for the kickoff party. He had only spent a couple of hours painting roads the night before, but he made sure to show up dressed in something colorful and comfortable.

Like his companion, Salvador, he had made a trip to the Twilight Market to visit a certain shop. The fabric of the robe he’d bought there was yellow, white, purple, and black. Though he had been spotted showing off the item, after a short while, he retired it to the guest house to keep it spotless.

He was not usually the sort of person to make speeches, but he briefly took the podium to say a few words.

“I did not prepare a speech, but I just wanted to say that we have something special here in Rhydin. I am one of those immigrants that Dris mentioned, and the world I come from is a harsh place. At least, when it comes to people who are different. I will not go into detail, but it is sufficient to say that I was not welcome to be myself there and often suffered for it. I had the support of a few who loved me, thank goodness, but the world at large did not accept me. Not like Rhydin has.

“When I arrived here a couple of years ago, I had nothing and no one, and I was so afraid. I never expected to find friends like the ones I have found, and I certainly never expected to find family. Especially in this quantity.” He paused to laugh.

“I never thought I would have the love, support, and freedom that I now have. Here, I can express myself however I need or desire to feel comfortable and good about myself. I can love whomever I want to love, and love them how I need and want to love them.

“It says a lot to me that some of the people in my circles simply do not understand the need for a Pride celebration. It tells me that they have always felt welcome, both in this city and with its people. That is special. Cherish that and protect it with all you have in you. It’s more important than you know.”

He paused to chew at his lip, and then he simply said, “Merci,” before he left the stand.

Afterward, he stuck close to his companion. And he was all too happy to retire to a quiet room once evening set in. He most certainly fell asleep while snuggled against Salvador with the Summer 2022 All Ranks Tournament playing in the background.
