Heart of the Dragon: Essence Trading & Imbuement!

A thick white sheet of parchment was tacked to the corkboard with a black and gold pushpin. The message that it contained was written in an exceptionally precise left-handed script in black ink. A seal in black and gold wax with the impression in the wax of a panther head was at the bottom of the parchment. Attached were two gift coupons, each good to redeem for two double-decker cheeseburgers at the burger milkshake shack, made out to Eden Parker.


I wish to redeem these coupons for one essence of FireStar and one essence of ShadoWeaver.

Eventually, Eden found the note from Rachael, and she hopped in place excitedly. She quickly collected the coupons and then wrote a note back in decidedly less neat handwriting:

Yay! Thank you, Rachael! Maybe you and the grandkits want to come with me? We'll make plans!

On Monday, the young man called gatito accompanied his companion Salvador to the Old Pub in Dragon’s Gate to spend an evening with Dris and Rhys. Over the course of dinner, the conversation turned to the activities that had recently taken place upon Twilight Isle.

Rhys and Dris filled Salvador and gatito in on some of the details of the massive battle against Ashene, taking the story from the initial challenge to the heart-stopping moment when certain members of the crowd had managed to paralyze the Dragoon, to the final moments before she plummeted to the sands. Then they talked about the incredible cache of treasures that had been opened to everyone present and how the items had rained down from the heavens.

In turn, Salvador and gatito told Dris and Rhys about how they had been drawn to the Isle the following morning by their dreams and a sense of impetus. They told the two men about their search through the trove, about Bicho’s initial attack against Salvador, and about gatito accidentally cutting Salvador with Mistral. They talked, too, about the things the Wizards had told them, about how the formerly-shattered Opals were spawning magical essence that was being used to imbue the items that everyone had taken.

Imbuement wasn’t something that Rhys had considered yet for the ring he called Shooting Star. He was unprepared and unlikely to take part in the tournament that was coming up, but he was intrigued by the idea of empowering Shooting Star even more. Before he could come around to asking, gatito offered to supply Rhys from his and Salvador’s surplus. The Spaniard agreed to this with a nod.

After a bit more discussion about the Opals and what gatito and Salvador knew of them, it was decided that they would gift one (1) FireStar essence and nine (9) wild essences to Rhys Germain.

After finishing a match in the Pit, Ebon decided it was time to redeem the essences he had collected. Blade in hand, he went in search of one who might help him in completing the process and imbuing Talon with elemental strength.

Upon finding one, Ebon held out a selection of the essences he had collected. "Good sir, would you assist me in binding these?"

"I might, at that." The wizard looked barely awake, but his half-lidded eyes were bright. "With what would you see them bound?" At that, Ebon drew the scimitar from its sheath, and the mage opened his eyes fully to gaze at it. "A fine blade, that. Sir, it would be my pleasure." Taking the essences, he examined them. "Plenty of FireStar in here... does it," indicating the blade, "have a name?"

"Talon."

That brought the hint of a smile to the wizard's face. "Very well. Let Talon's flame be lit!" With his magic, he imbued the scimitar with the Red Opal's essence. "Take it, my friend."

As Ebon held up his weapon, he could hear it in his mind, jubilant. I am Talon. I am reborn!

After Ebon raised Talon aloft and he knew his work was done, the Wizard wished him well in his journeys with his new, fiery companion.

"Merci." She permitted the newly-gained ShadoWeaver essence to coalesce in her gloved hand and offered it to Karma in trade for the FireStar essences. The fire Opal in the center of her right gold gemstone adorned cuff bracelet flashed, this time appearing to be in happiness.

As she took the ShadoWeaver essence, it was reverently tucked away for safe keeping for Caleb's weapon. "I can spare... three... of these wild ones for a black one if you want." She told Ebon.

You are most welcome, Eden. Perhaps once certain upcoming events have, as it is said, settled out, we could indeed indulge in such a feast. I will, of course, be paying for the feast for everyone, as both the grandkittens and I can consume quite a bit at a meal.

After Rachael finished dueling for the night at the Outback, she took her ten earned and traded for FireStar motes, along with her weapon from the hoard, to be imbued with the Opal essence.

The young Wizard watched Rachael leave with Flamestrike in hand, and couldn't help but smile. "You two shall do great things, I'm sure! Best of luck!"

Early Wednesday morning, Rhys tracked down one of the Wizards he had seen in town and asked about imbuing his ring, Shooting Star. Then he slipped the ring from his finger and handed it over, along with the essences that had been given to him by Salvador and Gatito.

While the Wizard worked, Rhys lingered off to the side and watched. He was fidgety and shifted his weight often. He bit his thumbnail, hoping this was the right move and that FireStar’s essence would not change Shooting Star too much.

When it was finished, he thanked the Wizard and accepted the ring back. As he slipped it back onto his finger, he thought he could feel its sigh course through his mind.

Are you all right?

I am fine.

The largest of Shooting Star’s stones swirled violet and seemed to be filled with even more stars. Bright and twinkling—and falling.

The Wizard gave Rhys a wry smile as he turned away, wondering just what the man had in store for the Shooting Star. Or, perhaps, what it had in store for him!
