Nova Liberdade: Setting Descriptions

Post by Bailey Raptis »

Nova Liberdade

Description

Nova Liberdade, formally incorporated as the Nova Liberdade Autonomous District, is a neighborhood located in west Old Temple, within close proximity of the wall that divides Old Temple from Dockside. It is .75 kilometers squared (or a little under a third of a mile squared) in area, and roughly rectangularly shaped. The main road through the neighborhood, recently rechristened Avenida do Liberdade (or Liberty Avenue), is where the main businesses and nicer apartments of Nova Liberdade are located, and takes roughly 15 minutes to walk from the northern torii gate that formally welcomes most visitors to the neighborhood to the less fancily demarcated south end of the district. The roads that run east and west into the avenue are less touristy and more working class, with businesses that cater more to residents, like groceries, hardware stores, repair shops, and the like. The houses and apartments here are more modest, too.

At the torii gate, as well as at the other entrances into Nova Liberdade, are signs that read, in Common, Japanese, and Portuguese, “Welcome to the Nova Liberdade Autonomous District”. In fact, nearly all signage in Nova Liberdade is written in those three languages. It reflects the fact that most of the neighborhoods residents come from São Amador, Brazil, or Japan originally, although there are some non-human residents and human residents with other racial and ethnic backgrounds present.

Those with faerie in their blood, however, can see an additional message on those signs: a glyph that roughly translates to read ”No True Fae Allowed.” How this edict – or any other law and order – might be enforced isn’t immediately clear. If there is a formal police force in Nova Liberdade, it does not wear traditional outfits, and any questions asked about involving the City Guard will receive a curt answer along the lines of “they have no authority here.”

Guidelines

Generally speaking, Nova Liberdade is open to the public for visiting and shopping. Becoming a resident is more difficult, and practically speaking, it is mostly limited to those who either lived there before the neighborhood became Nova Liberdade, or for those people originally from São Amador, Brazil, or Japan, or who speak Portuguese and Japanese. If you’re interested in moving a character into the neighborhood, please message me to ask.

Nova Liberdade has declared itself to be an autonomous zone, not subject to the rule of law of the traditional government strictures that RhyDin City follows – most notably, they do not acknowledge the authority of the City Guard to operate within their boundaries. The Nova Liberdade police force is more ad hoc and less visibly present in the district. The Nova Liberdade leadership will meet with City Guard folks and discuss any fugitives from justice who might flee into their neighborhood, but they will do everything in their power to keep the guard out and not just hand fugitives off to them willy-nilly.

Those with faerie blood in some way (except for Stolen Ones) will be able to read the additional message on most of the welcome signs leading into the district. Those that insist on remaining in the neighborhood will find themselves being shadowed and possibly kettled into heading out. Anyone stubborn enough to remain further will find themselves confronted by a group or groups of what appear to be giants, orcs, or ogres, who will make their best effort to get the invader to leave, by whatever means necessary. Please message me if you want your faerie-blooded character to come into the district and behave in this way.

More generally, please don’t fold, mutilate, spindle, or cause general mayhem and destruction within Nova Liberdade without checking with me.

Thanks!
