The camera turned on to a view of a fluorescent washed ceiling, artificially paled by the single blinding light bulb behind a frosted glass fixture. Off screen, a faucet is turned on, water spilling into a porcelain basin for a few moments amidst soft splashes. A moment later, there’s a soft sniffle and then Clara’s voice.

“It didn’t work.”

A few more moments pass in silence broken only by a quiet sigh.

“I think we’re stuck here.” The camera was tugged over and tipped downward from its view of the ceiling to settle on her red, splotchy face. It was clear she had been crying, her eyes swollen and her lashes wet as they were. She stares into the lens for a few moments, a pronounced frown on her normally upturned lips.

“I’m so sorry…”

A backdrop of lush landscaping plays host to the camera’s framing when it clicks on. Clara is in the middle of it, sitting on a bench in the thick of it all. The hour is late judging by the deep black of the sky. Only one moon was visible, a silver crescent that cast its filtered light through the clouds and gave her an almost ethereal appearance. It was a facade quickly ruined by the tittering giggle and the tip of the camera.

“Oops. Hi. I made a new friend today. Well, not completely new. I knew his name already. I’ve been in a pretty craptastic mood this week… well, half the week. So I went to the inn by myself. I think I’m bringing E and Yunni down. Anyways. The inn was pretty desolate which I suppose isn’t a surprise considering it’s a Sunday night. Sain was there when I got there but he left soon after with this fae girl. It worries me but whatever. His problem, not mine.” Her lilt was slightly slurred and her cheeks were rosy. Clara rubbed a little at her mouth and shrugged.

“I don’t **** with the fair folk. S’a good way to get yourself in trouble. But anyways. My new friend. His name’s Droet. He has horns. It’s pretty cool. We drank pineapple something or other. It burns on the way down but after you drink a bit of it, it wasn’t so bad. It didn’t actually taste like fruit juice but whatever. Maybe it was essence of pineapple or something. Kind of like grape flavor usually ends up tasting like cough syrup and watermelon flavor doesn’t taste like watermelons.” The girl paused, suddenly realizing she had veered off track in her ramblings.

“That weird butcher guy was there. Not the Matadero Carniceria guy but the weird one that Sain works for. He kind of scares me, if I’m being honest. While we were there at the bar, he like… spazzed out and broke a beer bottle and was threatening his drinking partner with it. Then a moment later he was fine, like he hadn’t just attempted to shank someone bar fight style. Like, who does that, you know? I dunno. It was weird and I think I’m better off staying away from him and probably anyone associated with him.” The camera began to tip again only for Clara to snag it and set it straight again.

“Oopsies. Um. Except maybe Sain. He works as security for the guy’s business so it’s not like I can really hold someone’s job against them. I told him he was cute. I don’t think he really believed me but whatever. I can regret it in the morning once I sober up. Mostly I’m just sitting out here for a little bit before I head back inside so Yunni’s mom doesn’t give me that look. You know the one I mean. The judgy Nayun look. For such a quiet thing, she’s sort of terrifying. But don’t tell Yunni I said that.” Pausing, she rubbed at her eyes with a balled up fist.

“But I think I’m tired so I’m gonna go pass out. Preferably inside, judgy looks be damned.” With a weak smile and a glassy eyed wink, she reached over and turned the camera off.

In a black tank top, no makeup, and her hair a tangled mess, she came into view as the camera clicked on. Her eyes were still a little red but it was hard to say if she was just tired or if it had anything to do with the night prior. Clara rubbed at her cheek, propping it up against her hand as she peered into the camera.

“I am so hungover. I’m never drinking ever again, I swear to the gods.” Her gaze ticked up toward the ceiling then back down to the recorder. “I ran into Sain at the inn too. That was… awkward as hell. When I texted him last night, I told him he was cute amidst my worrying about him hanging out with that fae girl.”

“He doesn’t understand. Sorta made fun of me for it… something about how she was so terrible because they got ice cream together and talked about things.” Rolling her eyes, she continued. “Then he told me that he found out he was a mage. The dude that claimed all mages are monsters and that he was meant to hunt them down and kill them all. Is a mage. The freaking irony right? I thought it was cool at first, because why not, but then he reiterated again that mages are monsters and why would he want to be one.”

She was quiet for a few long moments. “Does that make me a monster too?”

Reaching for the camera, the microphone picks up a soft sigh and an even quieter mumble. “I guess we’ll see, huh.”

“So… it’s been a really weird night.” Clara began as the camera clicked on. Sitting in her room at the dojo, she had her back to the wall her bed was against. A seemingly permanent smile seemed etched across her mouth, lingering even as she spoke. Her hair was slightly wet, errant wisps stuck to her forehead and ears.

“Yunni and I went out to grab a bite to eat and maybe shop a little… she’s kinda low on clothes. Everyone packed light when they came, thinking it would just be a short jaunt, ya know? We see how well that worked out. Anyways. Her moms gave her some money so I was going to show her a few places to get stuff on the cheap. There’s this super cute consignment shop called Turtle Junction. Cute clothes, gently used. Socks, scarves, cute underthings, new, not used. Ed told me about it. He always has such adorable outfits.” She sighed, envious.

“Ed and Trick aren’t a thing anymore. It makes me sad because they were tres cute together. But you know, sometimes things fall apart. It happens. Hoping I can still be friends with them, you know. I like ‘em both.” Sucking at her teeth thoughtfully, she reeled her thoughts back in and got them back on track. “But tonight! Right!”

“These… things. I don’t know what they were really. But there were creepy shadows and whispers and this, like, overwhelming feeling of dread. A portal thingie seemed to open and these monster blobs with legs and pincers and stuff came out and tried to get us. Yunni wanted to fight them but I just wanted to run. The last thing we need to do is go and get ourselves killed here, you know.” Clara took a deep breath and held it for a few moments before exhaling.

“But there was this, like… car horn. Then all of the sudden, a truck comes barrelling out of the portal and runs a bunch of the gross things over. I’m freaking out, Liyun’s freaking out, we’re all freaking out until the truck door opens. Out spills Jake, literal guns blazing. Not E’s dad but Jakeycakes, Jake. Jakey’s here!” There was that endless smile, flaring bright like a solar storm.

“So… uh… Aunt Claire, Uncle Coop...er, please don’t be mad at him. I’m really glad he’s here. Please don’t ground him forever when we get home.” She gave the camera an apologetic smile, her brows lifting hopefully. Maybe if she was cute enough it would make her wishes so. “But, um, I think we sorta broke his brain when we told him where we were. He was really confused and then he was… I dunno. He’s a hard read. But he’s here now and we’re safe. We all made it back in one piece and now we’ve got four brains that can work on getting us home.”

“We’ll be home soon. I promise we’ll be okay. Cross my heart.” With a single nod, she blew a kiss to the camera and reached to turn it off.

“Sometimes… sometimes I wish I was strong enough that people didn’t think I needed to be protected or rescued or anything.” She started off, laying on her stomach on the floor with the camera propped up in front of her. Elbows to the floor, hands to her cheeks, her frown ended up a little squished by the heels of her hands.

“Liyun’s younger than me… not by much, but still. And she’s still a better fighter and her parents have already trained her to be this like… way badass warrior, ya know. E’s, well, E. Captain Fate Defier, ya know. Even Jake’s way tough. He likes to pretend that he’s nothing special… because in a family like that, it’s hard to stand out. But he’s big, strong… smart. He could go walking through Dockside and nobody would ask him if he’s too young to be there alone.” Clara fixed the camera with a petulant pout.

“I ran into Sain down by the docks while running a delivery. Liyun was following me too. Neither seemed to think I should be there even if I made a butt ton of silver off of it. The sooner I get the money I need, the sooner I can get us home. Yunni asked him if he’d taken me out on a date yet.” A flush of red suffused her cheeks, prompting her to sigh again. “Which made it really freaking awkward when she left and he had to tell me that he and that faerie girl were a thing.”

For a few moments she quieted, fidgeting with a loose loop in the carpet. Setting her jaw, she folded her arms beneath her, setting her chin atop them. “I told him I was happy for him. Because I am. He’s a… really nice guy, he deserves it.”

“And then,” she continued. “I told him to look into faerie glamour. Because this seems really quick and honestly I don’t trust the Fair Folk as far as I can throw them. Which isn’t very far, for the record. Anyways… I guess he’s also sort of involved with her because she’s got someone bad after her. How do you argue with that?”

Her smile twisted wistfully and she shrugged a bit, the motion tight and pinched with how she was laying. “I can’t. So I’ll set my dumb crush aside and be happy for my friend. That’s what a good friend would do, right? Right.”

It started with a sigh before the camera ever blinked into focus. When it finally did, it centered on a pale faced Clara against a backdrop of lush foliage and washed by silvery moonlight. Even after the red light indicated the camera was recording, she was still quiet, at a loss for words or how to explain her day.

“Sooooooooooooooooooo…”

Eloquent. It was also all she had at first. She took another deep breath, finally speaking with the exhale. “I ran into Sain today… down at the docks. Had another delivery to make and just so happened to stumble upon him all banged up, sitting on a bench. He was hurt… really hurt. I tried to find out why and I guess… I guess his mage side manifested fully. Like… you know how I said he found out he’s a mage, well evidently that side is suppressed by this stupid Order that he belongs to. I hate Orders.

“Typically when this happens it’s a full manifestation that takes over completely, leaving no trace of what was there before. But he managed to rein it in and in the process it took a toll on his body. I healed him as best as I could. I’m not… very good at that whole thing but I tried. I think Mom would be proud because he could at least walk again. It took care of a lot of his bruising and soreness. I know I didn’t do a full assessment beforehand which was stupid and reckless… but he seemed okay afterwards.” Clara sucked in another breath without missing a beat.

“I’ll never be a Weaver… I don’t have the control or the delicacy for it. Not like Mama and Addie. But… but I still did something good tonight. Granted I forgot how much it takes it out of me to heal more than a bump or bruise… but it’s okay. I’ll sleep like a rock tonight. Once he was feeling a little better we went and got smoothies. You know me, I’m a sucker for pineapple.” Glancing over her shoulder, she looked back to the camera and made a face.

“I oughta go soon, but I wanted to get all of these thoughts out of my head so I can maybe stop thinking about them. Back to the whole… mage manifestation. It gets stranger. Allegedly it’s like he becomes a completely different person. Different personality, mannerisms, even calls himself a different name. Eolai. That’s what he said. Sain doesn’t remember these episodes but from what people have told him, they’re not pretty. It seems to happen if he’s incredibly stressed out or overwhelmed by neutral or hostile magic. He said that the lead ring I made for him seems to help some but we aren’t for sure.

“He said… he said that he should do the honorable thing and end things before he can hurt anyone. I’m not dumb… I know what that means. And I tried to make him promise he wouldn’t do anything rash like that. He wouldn't promise... But surely we can find a way to fix things. This is Rhydin, there’s always a way. Right?” She looked into the camera for a few moments before sighing once more and reaching over to turn it off.

“When I was little, my mom used to tell us stories about faeries and other fantastic creatures. Over them all was the Erlking. While Mama always said to avoid faeries like the plague, she still spoke of the elf-king like he could have been an exception. We talked about kings today… beautiful kings, ugly kings, kings that had ways about them that left no question that they were of noble blood. Royalty is overrated, you know.” Sitting in a dark room, the flicker of an LCD screen was all that lit up Clara’s face for the camera’s benefit.

“My sisters were princesses once. I’m just their half sister, we have different biological dads even though they call my father ‘Dad’. There’s a kingdom connected to Rhydin though not on Rhydin proper that their father was from. Mom lived there for a time but this was long before I was ever born. She was never a princess but Addie was by virtue of her paternal line. She gave it up though. The older first before I was born. The younger when I was still just a kid. I think I was maybe ten.” Rambling, she bit off a hunk of an apple slice and chewed thoughtfully.

“When we were little, younger Addie told me she wished the Erlking could have been her father instead. I told her she was stupid. Who would want a faerie for a father, you know. But not just any faerie, like, the faerie-est of faeries. He was a King though, Addie protested. I still say she was dumb for wanting that. Her real dad was lame but still her dad. Me, I’ve got a pretty great daddy. Henry Wyatt is one of the greatest men I’ve ever known. Daddy if you’re listening, I love you.” The flicker of her smile was a brief one but bright for all of its there and gone flare.

“I saw someone get their arm cut off today… right in the middle of the inn, this psychopath just cleaved Nick’s arm right off. Thankfully Nick’s already dead so it didn’t really hurt him. Just sort of inconvenienced him while Sain sewed it back on. I nearly passed out. I think I would have had Trick not distracted me. He’s getting his cast off this week. Then on Monday we’re going to go to Stars End. Sorta celebrate. He’s gonna show me the podracers, maybe his swoop bike depending on a few things.” Even in the dark, the renewed smile was undeniable.

“He’ll probably have to do physical therapy before he can get back to flying but maybe we can have some fun anyways. I know the cast has been a bit of a drag. I’d probably feel the same if I couldn’t fly. Well… I mean I can’t right now anyways. No ship, ya know. But like, it’d be way worse if I had a ship but couldn’t fly it because I was hurt. Either way… Monday gives me something to look forward to. Really it can’t get here soon enough. But yeah… that’s really all I’ve got. Hung out at the diner with friends tonight, it was nice being normal for a bit. I think it’s a sign this weekend’ll be chill and then Monday can be some fun.” Clara gave the camera a confident nod then reached to turn it off. “G’night!”

“This...weekend is not off to a good start.” For all of her confidence in her previous entry, she looked positively drained of her light. Her cheeks were red, not from embarrassment but rather too much sun, the shade matched over the bridge of her nose and across her forehead. Even her shoulders were pink, striped only by the inch-thick straps of her tank top. Clara rubbed at her face and shook her head.

“Tonight started off okay. I went down to the harbor to feed the uni-duckies. You know the ones with the horns and the teeth? They don’t like bread so I took turkey. I saw Sain there… I had told him and his girlfriend about the ducks the day before. Really I thought they were going to go see them last night. But I guess not. They got interrupted by this faerie asshole that’s been after his girlfriend. And… after that they broke up. Because Sain has some doubts about whether she’s genuinely in it for him or because he can stop this douche canoe. And because he doesn’t want his feelings for her held against him when the time comes to finally put this dog down.” She licked at her chapped lips and winced. In her pocket she found a tube of pink lemonade chapstick and layered in on over both lips before continuing.

“He was just so… angry. And then without even realizing it, I was talking to someone else. One moment Sain and I are talking and the next, it’s a complete stranger. I… I didn’t even notice until I looked at him. It sounded like Sain. It even looks like Sain to a point. Except the eyes. The eyes aren’t right. They’re black with gold light. It’s a little unsettling. He’s a little unsettling in general.” Clara swallowed hard, trying to rid herself of the dryness in her mouth and the lump in her throat.

“He’s pompous and flirtatious and terrifying. With just a sweep of his hand, he impaled a bunch of ships in the harbor with these giant icicles and then set them on fire. All because he said he was bored. Sailors were dying and I couldn’t do anything about it. I should’ve run… I should have. It was stupid to stay there but I couldn’t make my feet move. Only my mouth would work…” A common enough occurrence, everyone knew that Clara was a talker. By now she had hit her stride in regards to her rambling and after a shallow breath, kept going.

“Eolai wants to take everything from Sain… break it and hurt it and ruin it so that it ruins Sain. But what I don’t think he realizes is that if he does that… if more people get hurt… Sain’ll end it. And that’s the end for Eolai too.” Looking down at her lap, she fidgeted with the rings on her fingers then spoke quietly without looking back up. “I think I understand why Sain would want to get rid of that. Even if it costs his own life. And I think Sain will do it too if it comes down to it. So… I have to find a way to keep that from happening. Even if it means engaging Eolai myself.

“I don’t think that everyone is capable of being reasoned with… and I may get hurt doing this. But… it’s the right thing. It could be the difference between my friend living or dying. So… if I can get him talking… keep him talking instead of acting… maybe I can figure him out. I told him I can help him… I can help them both. I didn’t offer to save him because you can’t save everyone. Isn’t that what you say, Mom? We can’t save everyone but we can help them save themselves. And though their existences and objectives are at odds with one another… I’m going to find a way.” By now her voice was a whisper, shaky and breaking in places. She tugged at one of the rings on her fingers, twisting it around the digit then jamming it back down on the joint.

“He made me think he was going to kill me with Sain’s sword. I… I thought he was going to. But he stopped short. Not even an inch, I can still feel the itch that blade gives me. But he stopped. And that means that he can be reasoned with. So… now I guess we just have to see if I’m as good at poker as I think…”

“It’s… about nine thirty in the morning. And, um, I need to get some of this out of my head so that I’m not dwelling on it the rest of the day. I’m going to Stars End with Trick and he deserves Happy Clara instead of ****ed up Clara.” She exhaled a soft sound and pushed her hand back through her hair, tangling it midway back. Fingers still snarled in dark locks, she set her elbow to her knee and sighed.

“I saw Sain again last night. He said some pretty terrible things to Roni, hoping that she might hate him enough to go away. That way he doesn’t hurt her more if Eolai decides to cause more problems. I guess… I guess I kind of understand it but hurt begets more hurt. How much are we allowed to inflict in the name of preventing future damage?” She eyed the camera for a few moments, working her jaw before shaking her head. Her cheeks were pale, almost ashen.

“Eolai tried to convince Roni to shoot me. Likely because getting someone else to hurt me isn’t the same as hurting me himself. She didn’t do it. Obviously. But… it’s probably a matter of time before something happens. I’m doing my best not to let anything happen… I wouldn’t want to let Jake and E and Yunni down...

“I’m not really sure what to think about what’s going on with Jake either. Before… back home, he was my friend. A good friend, but still just a friend. We’ve known each other since we were kids, you know? Babies even. I asked him to marry me when I was five. He said no. But he’s still been my friend ever since. But it’s different here and I’m not sure what to make of it. We went to the beach just him and I for a little food and night surfing. It’s not so choppy at night, you know. Not so different even if we are. There’s kissing and stuff, you know. I know nobody wants to hear about that. But he’s…” Her cheeks flushed as she trailed off, pinching one shoulder up in a shrug. “He’s a good kisser. He said he was going to ask me to prom before I left but he didn’t wanna throw a wrench into things between Malik and I. What a dummy… I would have said yes.

“Anyways, back to what I was saying. I gave Sain another focus ring… previously I made him a lead one to try and block out some of the magic that was happening or to at least channellock it. This time it was cold iron for his Zagan issue.” Taking off her own cold iron ring from her middle finger, she held it up to her eye to look through it with a frown.

“I can’t really help him test out the iron ring but we went and tried out the lead one finally instead of him just wearing it around hoping for passive benefits. I think he’s really getting the hang of it. The amount of latent power in him is… well, it’s astounding. The lead ring ought to be a good outlet, you know. It made him feel less likely to snap, kinda like taking a pot of boiling water off the burner.” Clara slipped the ring back onto her finger and glanced to the side of the camera.

“I asked him about the night with the ducks. He didn’t remember any of the time in which Eolai controlled things. He was worried that he may have hurt me. I didn’t tell him about the sword incident. We, um, we went back to his place for a bit to talk more. Nothing bad happened, I swear to the goddess.” She held a hand up to go with her swear. Still she looked troubled. “I dozed off though, like super lame, head to his shoulder sort of dozed off. I’ve just been so… tired, you know?” The deep inhale was audible even to the camera’s microphone, her exhale coming slowly past pursed lips. Once more she avoided the camera’s lens in favor of staring at her lap.

“I woke up to him kissing me and stuff. Except it wasn’t Sain.” She whispered, swallowing back the inevitable frown. “He got annoyed when I rebuked his advances in favor of sleep. Dumped me on the floor. I called him out on his crap. Which I think caught him off guard. He made me breakfast… or well, had this creepy clone make me breakfast. I made him swear on his power that he wouldn’t hurt me with it or in general. The food was really good but I didn’t get much of it because I got mad and left. They’re both so different but there are certain things about them that are the same like their inability to accept help when it’s offered. I don’t know. The whole thing left me incredibly put off and confused… I just… yeah. I need to get it all out of my head before I head to Stars End. Hopefully I’ll have better news later.”

A sharp contrast to the listless girl that had appeared on camera earlier in the day, Clara now is a windblown mess sporting a wild grin to match her hair. She had tried to restrain it with a charcoal grey bandana, tied in a knot atop her head but it mostly just kept the maelstrom out of her eyes. Still holding the camera, she flopped onto the neatly made bed at the dojo set on Adenna’s embassy grounds.

“That. Was. AMAZING.” She exhaled then laughed, rolling over onto her stomach to position the camera at the foot of the bed. From there she propped her chin on her hands and set her elbows to the mattress.

“I just got back from Stars End and ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my god! Okay, so, like I said before, Trick does podracing. We went out there today to celebrate him getting his cast off and so he could show me around. I’ve been around Stars End a ton but never have I had a chance to check this stuff out. I got to meet his racing team too, they all seem super nice like brothers, ya know? And thennnnn, eeeeee! Podracing!” Clara squeaked, rolling over yet again until she was looking at the camera upside down.

“So, like, we don’t really have these things where I come from. They’re just… not quite used anymore, ya know? For those of you back home who’ll hopefully get to watch this eventually, podracers are a sort of repulsorcraft. They use repulsorlifts, like anti-grav thrusters, ya know? It’s essentially a hovercraft but… faster. More dangerous. And SO much cooler. Like… when I say faster, I mean like over seven hundred kilometers an hour. Whoosh!” She gestured with her hands and laughed.

“Anyways, so it’s like a one man cockpit pulled along by two engines attached by cables. They really vary in design and style depending on their racer but Trick’s was way cool. Once he gets back into it, he’s going to be one of the best. I know it.” Fixing the camera with a grin, she tipped onto her side and shrugged a bit. “You know, it was kind of nice just hanging out like that. No drama, no doom and gloom, no blah-de-blah. Just fun. Low key. Trick’s a good guy. We’ll have to do it again soon.

“Buuuuuuut, I need to go harass Jakey now, so I shall return soon!” She smooched the camera lens, leaving behind a chapstick-y lip print before switching it off.

The camera clicked on and took in Clara, sideways-ish laying on the bed. Her eyes were on the ceiling and even in profile, the frown was easy to see. In her undone hair, a single cherry blossom had been stuck behind her ear, lending a pretty contrast to her obviously unhappy demeanor.

“What’s in a name. That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. It’ll also stab the **** out of you with its thorns, but that’s besides the point, isn’t it Juliet? What is in a name though? There are false names and true ones, nicknames and those given at birth. Of course there is power in every single one of those but none so much as the power invested in one’s True Name.” She rambled without looking aside at the camera, using it less as a recording of her day’s events and more to get the thoughts out of her head. It was her third entry in less than a day, capping a tumultuous day of highs and lows. This? Well, she didn’t know just whether it was a high or a low. Maybe it was the sudden jolt of the rollercoaster when it came to a stop.

“The power of a Name reverberates in our blood, in our magic, in the aether around us. It can be used to strengthen us or it can be used to bring us to our knees. To know a Name is to know the very core of us. Such can be said for magic, for religious invocation, for mysticisms as old as time itself. Isis learned of Ra’s true name and as such gave her complete power over him to the point she was able to install Horus on the throne. It’s… it’s a big deal.” Her hands clasped over her ribcage and her fingers fidgeted with a circular object on the tip of her index finger. Even in the dark the line of gold in the ring glinted with preternatural light.

“It’s why so many religions avoid invocation of their gods’ names, because such a name carries so much power that they risk incurring the wrath of their chosen deity. I mean… even the silly little fairy tales speak of such power. Look at Rumpelstiltskin. Figure out the man’s name and you’re free, little girl. Though I’d probably be a terrible person and kidnap pretty girls too if my True Name were Rumpelstiltskin. I don’t have a True Name though… I’m just Clara. Mama’s got one though… Addie too. All Weavers do. But not me.” Hesitant to nudge the ring on her finger past the pad of her index, she tugged it free and held it up to the dim light for further exam, her frown deepening.

“So just why would anyone give their Name and their power so freely to another in a trinket like this. Of course I’ve to find a way to said name… but it’s there. I can feel it. I can feel him. He says he can’t hurt me if I wear it but surely it can’t be that easy, right? There has to be something more to it than that. Jake says I have to be more careful… so I’m trying to be. It’s just… so much.” Rolling the ring between her fingers, she sighed and shook her head. Beside her on the bed, she scooped up a little rosewood box and set the ring inside before shutting it with a soft click.

“I want to trust him. I shouldn’t, but I want to. This is, I dunno, it’s a leap of faith on his part. I don’t want to let him down but I can’t do anything that’ll hurt me… or will hurt Sain. But with this… I can call to him if I want to. If I need to. Can send him away too and he can’t stop me. There has to be a catch though, right? I just need to figure out what it is.” Clara sighed again and rolled over, patting along the camera’s side and jostling it until she found the power button.

A black screen is accented by the crackle of static and a slight shuffling. After a moment, she cleared her throat and spoke up.

“So… it’s been awhile, huh? I’ve been really busy with, well, pretty much everything. Recording has sort of fallen to the wayside as far as priorities go. But I have a lot of stuff in my head that I think I need to get out. Sorta like… I dunno, RAM or an overloaded cache. I guess that means I’ll sit here and ramble for a bit and see if I come to any profound revelations. Where to begin, where to begin. I suppose at the start would be best… well, from where I left off last time.

“The day after I got that ring, I saw Sain. I made sure to meet him somewhere public, just in case. Jake’s afraid of me being alone with him… it’s dangerous. It is. So. Public is safe, right? We met at the beach so that I could help him learn how to use the iron focus ring I made for him. I’m still kinda proud of how the ring turned out. Delicate without being girly, ya know? Apt for the metal. I, uh, sorta paid a pixie to load up a few spells for me. I used those to let him test the ring out.

“It… um… well, it was interesting. I think maybe I threw too much at him too fast. Fae magic is potent and nefarious. Granted it was illusory but still. The magic use was hard on him. For all that Eolai wields it with ease, Sain has trouble doing so without extreme strain on his body. We’re talking soft tissue damage, broken bones, yada yada yada. I shouldn’t have pushed him so hard. The one for breaking a glamour was a good exercise at least. Especially if he has to deal with Zagan in any capacity.

“All I really want for him is to be able to take care of this problem and do so without getting himself hurt. Not sure if I’m leading him the wrong way to doing so. But faeries don’t fight fair and they don’t stop just because you’re tired or have a bit of a boo boo. The last one… made him watch me die right in front of him. As if Eolai did it. Or as if Sain himself had done it. Well, not Sain himself, but a copy of him. It may as well have been Eolai. I don’t know.

“I had to heal him… it took a lot out of me, but his aura’s good at amplifying my abilities, so there’s that. It seemed like everything was going to be alright until I opened my stupid mouth. He’s got these… wrist cuffs. They’re really heavy and they sort of give me a similar vibe to his sword or the ring Eolai gave me. I was right. They’re the same material, forged into bullets and tuned to a specific hunter. In this case, him… they made bullets just for him…

“It’s an insurance policy of sorts. I sort of lost my *** on him about them. I couldn’t help it though. The thought that he might… that… that there might be a Rhy’din in which he no longer exists is bad enough. That he’d have to do it by his own hand… I just… yeah. I said some things that I probably shouldn’t have. Hurtful things. He left…

“We didn’t talk for days until Eolai contacted me. He’s… remarkably charming when he wants to be. He wanted to talk, I agreed. I just wanted his company without any more arguments… so we went swimming. We talked about space and flying and the stars. I think we’re going to the space station soon, just so I can show him what I meant about the view. And then… then we flew. Right over the water and we went so fast and so far that eventually I didn’t know which way was the sky and which was the sea. That far from the coast, the sea reflects the stars and it’s all endless space.” She paused with a soft sigh.

“Reminded me of Aladdin. You know, a magic carpet ride all I can show you the wooooooooorld. That sort of thing. It was pretty freaking magical. I… I got caught up in the moment… got caught up in him. I don’t regret it, I don’t think. But then, we got to talking about Sain and stuff afterwards. I thought we might get into a fight like I had with Sain… but, it was different. He seemed to understand why I was upset, explained things to me a bit. Then he gave me this… marble thing. It had Sain’s memories of his hunter training in it.”

Silence reigned for almost a minute before she swallowed hard and spoke up again, a bit softer than before. “They were… pretty horrific. A few days after watching them, it was all I could see when I closed my eyes. The… torture those children go through is absolutely atrocious. I can’t understand how anyone could do such a thing. They’re just kids! These little mages that they turn into hunters. They’re beaten and tortured and pushed to their limits, broken and stripped of their identities until they are perfect subservient weapons, beholden to an Order that cares not for their lives in the least…

“It pisses me off. It made me wanna throw up but after that feeling passed, I wanted to dismantle every last one of those bastards, you know? But I can’t. I’m just a girl and I’m very, very far away from where ever this Order comes from. But… I think it gave me a better understanding of Sain and how his brain works. It’s some of the worst brainwashing I think I’ve ever seen. That sort of thing isn’t easy to break through. But I want to. He’s my friend and… and I care about him more than I might want to admit.

“Not that it matters. He doesn’t really know how he feels toward me. Besides… I’m going home eventually. It’s better to not get overly attached to anyone here. Really… really I should just stick to the dojo and the embassy… with Yunni and E and… Jake. That would be easier right? Less complicated? Safer?

“Then what do I do when something bad happens and I could have done something to stop it. That’s my hangup. I couldn’t live with myself if I could have helped. So I’m going to keep fighting for my friends. Both of them. All of them. The ones I’ve met here and the ones that came to find me. They need me and I need to get them home.

“Umm… where was I. Right. Okay. I’ve been writing a lot of this down, just because the days are sort of blending together. After I talked to Sain about the Order and stuff he said I should talk to Eolai again and ask him about why mages are the danger that they are. I feel like I’m playing Telephone with these boys. But… eventually I talked to Eolai. It was….” She went quiet for a few moments. “Not fun.”

“Mages don’t live very long where they come from. Their power destroys their bodies and then when it degrades too far, they essentially implode. Like… literally. Boom. Everything for several miles, gone. Hunters kill mages to keep that from happening. Eolai, is, well… different from normal mages. Firstly, the back and forth trade between Eolai and Sain isn’t normal. Once a mage manifests, that’s usually it. He’s older than most mages that hit that point… which is bad and good. Evidently the signs of degradation are there… Sain knows what to look for.

“Eolai thinks that when the time comes, I may be able to help Sain survive it. I don’t see how. I’m not… I’m not indestructible and even if I was, my healing abilities aren’t that strong. I don’t know. I don’t know how to handle this information. They’re both so resigned to this as a definitive thing and neither one wants to accept the hope of the possibility for more. I can fix this. I know I can.

“I was going to stay the night with Eolai that night but when we got back to his place… he left me with Sain instead. That was… awkward. I felt used and lied to, like he only took me there to get back at Sain. I… it’s not a good feeling. So after that I sort of ignored both of them for a few days. I was hurt and angry and I don’t know what else, so I threw myself into research. It’s a comforting thing, you know, studying. I filled page after page after page with theory and ideas, but it was all arcane. Because that’s how you approach magic, fire with fire. Except… I was wrong. I was way off. I saw Eri and Mallory at the inn while I was working on things and Mallory said something that gave me an idea.

“I was approaching it all wrong. Magic would fight such theories but technology… that bends to our will so much more easily. Of course Mal said you still have to be careful with such a thing, especially if you’re trying to contain something volatile. But I got to thinking… if it’s possible to separate Sain and Eolai… there is the question of where one of them goes. What if… what if I could build something, you know?

“Of ****ing course Eolai popped in. Quite literally, said I summoned him and all. So, note to self, writing his name down and playing with this stupid ring are enough to do that. He… he told them about stuff with Sain, about leaving me there as a prank. I’ve never been so embarrassed. I just sort of… snapped. I haven’t been that angry in a really long time. I don’t… I don’t like getting that way. Weird things happen and then… yeah. I don’t like it.

“It, uh, got a little foggy there. But… I got ideas. And more importantly, I think they’re viable. I’m going to, and this sounds crazy, but I want to build an AI model. Rewrite a reimann matrix and open it up for human consciousness rather than pre-written code. Custom built framework, likely a focus metal to account for soulbound magics. Real-feel synthetic flesh. Fully operational, you know? Then we just have to split Sain and Eolai and we have a duplicate. No longer do we have to worry about two contained within one.

“It of course poses an issue of… who. Who moves out. My worry is that… that since Eolai is technically the originator, if we remove him from, it’ll negatively impact Sain’s existence. But if we can go the other way around, free Sain up and allow him a body that isn’t impacted by the detriments of Eolai’s magic… it could work, right? It’s ****ing insane. I know. It’s… foolish and playing god, but I think it’s his best shot. From there, I want to reinforce what’s left of Eolai with some sort of focus metal to better ground and channel his magic, re-attune it to Rhydinian frequencies, you know?

“I could save both of them… I could give them a chance at a legitimate life. I think I need to go talk to Sain about this…”

Sigh. “I think I broke him. I took a sweet, kind, considerate man and I broke him. Instead of convincing him that my plan is the best way to help him and Eolai both, I’ve made Sain question his very existence. He now knows that Eolai was there first… that it was Eolai all along until the Order broke a child so severely that he had no choice but to protect himself psychologically with a separate personality. Eolai isn’t the split… Sain is. How do you deliver that kind of news without ****ing someone up?

“You can’t. I tried. And I am not very good at that sort of thing normally. He damn near lost it… but like he always does, he reined it in. Put on his Hunter’s mask. Pretended he was fine. At least for the sake of letting me finish laying out my plan. I explained it all… he pointed out a few issues I’ll have to work on. I’ll need a better containment backup in case this fails. But in the end he said yes. He cried, but he said yes. I stayed with him awhile afterwards to make sure he was going to be okay. I think he was afraid I was going to leave him… that I wouldn’t care about him anymore because I didn’t think he was a real person any longer.”

In the background, plastic crinkled. “I don’t think I could stop caring if I tried. But the past couple of days I’ve been working on the preliminary plans. I still needed to talk to and convince Eolai of everything. If I didn’t have both of them on board, it wouldn’t matter. All this work… it’d be for nothing. It took me two days to get the gall to talk to Eolai about it. I was still angry at him… for everything.

“But I met him down at the divining shoreline last night. Earlier yesterday, Camellia and I had gone hunting for titanium. I need a lot of it if I’m going to make this work. We, um, we ended up at St. Luke’s… they’ve got a pretty good orthopaedic department and Doctor Al’amin just finished her residency. I can’t outright tell her who I am, but I think I can get in good with her enough to get her to offload what I need. Thankfully I didn’t see Mom there… that would’ve been weird. I run the risk of running into her if I go back there… but I may need their help. This is a big undertaking and I don’t think I can do it alone even if I design and build everything.

“Anyways… Eolai was a prick as I expected. He was a dick from the get go so I don’t know why I even bothered going down to talk to him. He already knew what I was going to ask.” Clara exhaled, terse. “He said no. He said no and I snapped. Because all he could do was *** on my idea without offering anything in return that didn’t involve leveling a couple miles worth of Rhydin and hoping it wasn’t near any population centers. That’s… that’s not good enough for me. He said that… he’d never hurt me. And I pretty much told him he would.”

A few moments of silence were followed by a sigh. “I wasn’t very nice but everything I said was true. I told him he already got what he wanted. He got to hurt Sain and he even got to use me to do it. Hell, I ****ing broke him myself. That’s on me. One hundred and ten percent on me. But Eolai wins in the end. Of course he does… the sweet moments, the… the seemingly genuine feelings and sweetness… the times where he wasn’t this… this ****ing sociopath… none of it could possibly be real. And I was the ****ing sucker who fell for it all. Who fell for him. And his tricks and his lies and his manipulations.”

Her voice cracked and again she went quiet. The microphone barely picked up quiet sniffles and a light bit of shuffling. When Clara continued, she was quieter than before, defeated. “For a few moments I wanted nothing more than to not exist. Because the… thought that I could have been so stupid to fall for that **** was too much to take. For all of his bluffs that I called, I didn’t care about one more. I didn’t care if he’d hurt me physically. I took my rings off… all of them. Begged him to do his worst. I wasn’t… thinking straight. And I hate it. I hate not being able to think clearly around him.

“The next thing I know, my rings are gone. All of them except that stupid aetherian steel one. Gone. Nothing more than ash. It was the bucket of cold water over my head that I think I needed. It was like someone slapped me right across the face and for once I could see clearly. Just a few words, that’s all I had in my head. A question. We were at the divining shoreline after all… It’s just supposed to be a silly urban legend that it’ll answer your questions for you… but I figured I’d try. Four words… that’s it. Because I realized… that it doesn’t matter if he cares about me. It only matters if I care about him. Because if I do… I’ll go to the ends of the universe for him.

“I’m so stupid…” Another quiet sob was picked up by the microphone just before the feed went dead.

“Stupid thing… what is wrong with you?” The microphone crackled a bit, screeching through the recording and making Clara hiss in annoyance. “Ow, stop that! Okay, fine. I’ll fix the video later. Jeeze. I think I broke my recorder… I know it’s picking up audio but the video’s out. I suppose I can pull it apart and figure out why but it’s not super high on my priorities right now.”

Sigh. “It’s been a little while since my last sit down to record, so I apologize if I’m a little scattered. I’m trying to go chronologically so we’ll see if that helps. Uhh, where’d I leave off? Right… crying like a baby because Eolai’s a jerk. He texted me the next day, or well, later in the day from when I recorded my last log. We met at the little garden where he first gave me the aetherian steel ring. It was raining, well, more like drizzling. He apologized as soon as I got there.

“Color me surprised, I didn’t think he was capable. But, uh, he said that this… thing… between us. It’s real. Supposedly. He said it wasn’t about getting at Sain but rather about making me smile. I dunno. He said he understood if I didn’t want to talk to him anymore. Some part of me wishes I could make myself stay away, to do exactly that and never speak to him again. But maybe that was sleep deprivation talking. Who knows… I ended up dozing off on his shoulder

“He agreed to it though… said he’d go through with things on one condition. That I’ve got to actually start getting rest. That if I’m gonna do this right the first time, I need to stop pushing myself to the point of exhaustion. I’m gonna try… I don’t think it’ll work, my brain’s just not wired that way, but I’m gonna try. For them at least. It’s been going okay-ish, I suppose.” Okay was subjective, as evidenced by the quiet yawn she tried to stifle in the background.

“A few days after that, I met up with Eolai again. He had something for me. A little suspended elemental… like, a little AI tuned to water as an element. I call her Pix. She takes the form of a little water sprite and she’s pretty much the cutest things ever. Also super useful, it’s been transferring a lot of my notes directly to a digital format so I don’t have to try and write everything down or try to remember it all. It’ll definitely cut down on the work I have to personally put into this build… like by hours.” Clara went quiet for a few moments as she flipped pages in her notebook.

“The next night… Jake and I went to prom. He told me awhile back that he wanted to take me to prom but he had been afraid of asking… then I disappeared and he couldn’t. So… he set up our own private prom on the beach. Food and drinks and twinkle lights… slow dancing… and other stuff… it was… wow. He’s been one of my best friends since we were little, you know? To think that we could have more than that… is… well, I promised him that we’d always be best friends no matter what.

“It’s Jakey though. Why am I surprised? Tall, handsome, sweet Jake. It’s him, it’s always been him. I compare ‘em all to him and I guess now I know why. But… things right now are complicated and messy. If he and I are going to do… this thing… I wanna do it right. Even if it means waiting until I’ve straightened **** out with other things… even if it means waiting ‘til we go home. How’s it possible to have feelings for more than one person?

“I’m still figuring that out… I should probably do that sooner rather than later before I hurt someone. I probably will regardless. Sex is one thing, sex isn’t a big deal… it’s just something people do. But the more in depth feelings? That’s where people get hurt… where it gets messy, you know? Stupid me… I care about them all… Jake… Sain… Eolai. Stupid, stupid me. I don’t even know what the **** I’m doing, let alone how to handle that mess.” She groaned quietly, shuffling the recorder’s position slightly.

“Complicated is overrated. I much prefer things like… the Seaside Spectacular. That was lovely. It was a lot smaller than I remember, but the display was gorgeous. I went with Jake and Yunni and E. Yunni’s moms were there too, but we didn’t stay with them very long. I think they’re excited Liyun’s here. It kind of makes me wonder what my mom and dad would think of me being here… or Jake’s parents would think, you know? But neither of us are born yet, hell, I’m not even thought of yet, I don’t think.

“Lisa’s taking us to the surf contest down at King’s Cove here in a few, so I should probably finish getting ready. I think Jake wants to enter. I might even though I’m not as good as he is. He’s worried about his family being there but I pointed out that his mom’s pregnant with him right now, there’s no way they’ll be there since she can’t rightly surf, you know? But yeah. Anyways. That’s all my rambling for the day, so I’ll catch you later I suppose. Maybe with video.” Clara snorted as if to say it wasn’t likely, just before the recorder clicked off.
