Search for the First Ever Overlord Squire!

Post by Claire Gallows »

So, according to Sylus, the winner of last night’s challenge gets to be the first Overlord in the history of Duel of Swords to name their very own Squire. I know I’m not officially Overlord until next Thursday but by the time this is all said and done, I will be. Rather than just handing it over to the first person that asks, I figured we’d have some fun with it.

For those who don’t know about the new Squire weapon, here’s what I’ve been told:

The Shield of Gondar

While not having any association with the First Overlord, it is tied to the legacy behind the first Overlord for being the first in Arena Existence. An hoplon style shield of wood with a thin layer of polished bronze over the surface. The Shield of Gondar is known to change its appearance to reflect the Squire using it, though this is not always true. How much the shield can do depends on how much the squire themselves can unlock.

With the nature of previous Squire weapons, the power of the shield can either help or hinder the Overlord's Squire. It holds two enchantments. One allows the squire to reflect light from the surface of the shield in an attempt to blind their opponent and the second allows them to bend light around their person in a momentary chameleon state that does not always work.

Isn’t it pretty? If I weren’t Overlord, I’d totally go for it.

So yeah. Up for grabs is that beauty and the opportunity to be the first ever Overlord Squire. Fancy, right? Now I know you’re wondering just how you get it. That’s a great question. Starting tonight, we’ll be running a little contest from September 23rd until duels close on October 5th, so almost a full two weeks. This won’t be your typical squire contest, no, we’ll be judging on activity both in and out of the ring as well as your willingness to hit the books and learn a little more about the history of DoS.

We’re working on a point system here, so here’s how you can rack ‘em up.

First! Every day, we’ll have a Duel of Swords history question. Send me your answer and the first one to send the correct answer gets 5 points! History questions on Thursdays (September 29th) will be worth 10 points.

Second!
Get into the rings! You’ll get a point for every duel you log, win or lose. Tack on 2 more if you win. There’s even more points up for grabs, so let me just lay those out here:

Log a swords duel! -- 1 Point
Win a swords duel! -- 2 Points
Beat a Renegade Baron -- 3 Points
Beat a Loyal Baron -- 2 Points
--Beat multiple barons within the 2 week time frame and add more points! Beat 2 barons, gain 3/2 points for the first and 4/3 for the second. Beat 3? That 3rd will get you 5 points for a Renegade and 4 points for a Loyal. Same for if you beat more than that, keep adding points.
Beat a Squire -- 1 Point
Win with a Shutout (5-0) -- 2 Points (3 points if it’s a perfect 5-0 in 5)
Beat a Baron or Squire in a sport other than DoS -- 1 Point

Third! Show up! Points will be up for grabs even for those who aren’t actively dueling.

Cheer for an active duelist! -- 1 Point per duel, pick 1 duelist to cheer for. If they win, add another point.
Wear your Team Dirty gear! -- 1 Point per day. Don’t have your gear yet? Hit up the Arena Gift Shop for all of your Team Dirty jerseys and shirts.
Thank a caller! -- 1 Point per caller shift. That means there is 1 point up for grabs each night or 2 on Saturdays!
Call a shift! -- 2 Points per shift. Sub or regular, it doesn’t matter. Add 2 points if you call more than 5 duels in a shift. Lend a helping hand and add to your tally!

The duelist ranked Grandmaster or below with the highest point tally as of the end of regulation on October 6th will win the right to the Shield of Gondar as the first official Overlord Squire!

But wait! There’s more!

Prizes!
First Place: Shield of Gondar/Overlord Squireship, 5000 Silver, and the 1st Place Overlord Squire Search Trophy
Second Place: 3000 Silver, dinner for 4 (alcohol included) at the Sassy Owl Saloon in the Marketplace, and the 2nd Place Overlord Squire Search Trophy
Third Place: 1000 Silver, dinner for 2 (alcohol included) at the Sassy Owl Saloon in the Marketplace, and the 3rd Place Overlord Squire Search Trophy

Current squires are eligible as well if they’d like to take the Overlord Squire position instead of their current one but be conscientious of your Baron. And just so the Warlords aren’t left out, any Warlords or Barons that participate qualify for the following:

First Place: 1000 Silver and the 1st Place Overlord SS Warlord Trophy
Second Place: 600 Silver and the 2nd Place Overlord SS Warlord Trophy
Third Place: 300 Silver and the 3rd Place Overlord SS Warlord Trophy

There is also a MYSTERY PRIZE up for grabs to be awarded to one lucky participant of my choosing. What is it? Well it’s a mystery so you’ll just have to wait and see.

Count me in, mostly because I think it would be pretty amusing to be Overlord one week and the new Overlord's squire the next. In truth, I knew I was punching above my weight class to begin with though.

Is it ok to enter both this and Lirssa's squire tournament? I'm guessing you two probably talked that through already and came to some kind of arrangement, but I didn't see it in the rules.

Since Lirssa's squire shindig ends before this one, she'll get prime pick of anyone that signs up for hers. And if you have a squireship but still want to take part in this without needing/wanting the Overlord Squire spot, there are still prizes like silver, trophies, food, and the mystery prize up for grabs.

Have fun!

5 Points to Michi for her answer: "The answer is 29, Dalamar Ar'Daumon with 19 and Imp with 10."

I will take a stab at this, although I suspect I will be less in the running for the squireship and more in the running for, and I quote the popular morning game show "RhyDin Riches" here, the "fabulous cash prizes."

I have very little interest in another squireship as Sabine has been an excellent Baron to be associated with but I do like the challenge presented with participating in this.

Count me in.

5 points for Six (5 for 6 haaaa) for his answer: "I feel like there is something about this question I'm missing, but I'll go with the total 404 warlords."

Nope, not missing anything, just a straightforward question this morning! It's been a long weekend.

A new question will be up tomorrow morning. Tonight's another Fight Night with Sadie in the Annex. Come out for more Duel of Swords (and Magic and Fists too)!
