I'm far more likely, in a room typically dominated by higher ranked characters, to think we've both made out well by finding an at rank duel when I'm on an alt, than to think "sweet, easy win.. totally going to exploit this!"
I hear you, and I respect that. It's a bridge too far for you and I understand.

But I really want to clarify, I didn't think I was assigning or assuming bad motives to people who duel on an alt and don't disclose it. If it sounded like I was, let me say definitively, that's not at all what I meant.

Just because something might be experienced negatively by one opponent in a duel, doesn't mean that the other opponent was intending to be exploitative. What I meant was simply that I do feel that a person with a lot of experience still has an advantage over a newer dueler even if they face them at the same rank. And there is an additional advantage when the alt dueler has faced the new dueler before under a different char.

Speaking of my own POV. I'm not exactly caring if I lose when I'm on my higher ranked characters, mostly due to having a big enough buffer. So fighting down is never really an issue for me when I get the feeling that the person I'm fighting is new, or is struggling currently in ranking up. Flipped around, if I'm on an alt and a higher rank is offering the chance to fight me at even mods, I feel like I can use their lack of choices mod-wise and even their possible lack of care of losing in that situation to gain the upperhand; along with the W at the end of the duel. The more WOL's I see next to someones name, the bigger the feeling that a loss won't be the end of the world for them. Compared to a mid-rank fighter, they may be less willing to fight at rank since they are trying to get to the top rank themselves. So I can't fault them for their choices.

Plus I have an excuse to pick on Matt.

First off, thanks for starting the thread. It's nice to hear from a true new(er) dueler. I'm sorry you didn't feel you could post it a year ago.
Luna Eva wrote:But like I said in my first post, if we are in fact looking at a declining interest in dueling, and people are expressly stating that some of these things are the reasons why they stopped participating (which they are, to me) then at least we can keep thinking about and talking about ways to try to boost their positive experiences and minimize their negative ones.
I think...we've actually been pretty stable for many years. We're not growing. That's for certain. And we definitely had a fall off from our heyday way, way, way back at the height of AOL days.

We could point to this rule or that rule, or this or that attitude being the reason, but really changes have happened over time. And *most* of the community is reasonably open to change. (It does require some arguing. I do remember having to help convince Matt, and then Kheldar, of the benefits of zeroing losses on a weekly basis. But that change did then get made in both DoS and DoM after a suitable trial period in DoF.)

I think more, from the perspective of someone who's been around for a while, really what we see is a fairly normal "aging out" of folks. Some people stick around for a year or two. Some for five of six. The odd few stick around for a decade or more. Ultimately though, life takes us in new directions. Maybe it's a new job that changes your hours. Maybe it's a baby. Maybe it's move across country. Maybe it's a new hobby that steals all your time (like EQ).

There are lots of reasons that people move on. In this community, or in any other. This isn't a situation that's unique to us here at RoH. I could make the same comments using EQ as an example. I stopped playing after a few months. My wife *still* plays.

It's *always* a good idea to revisit the rules. Review how they are working. Refine as necessary. Get the perspective of both new and old. But, the reasons people move on are usually outside influences, and it's a pretty normal phenomenon for any healthy community. People move on. That's just how it goes.

The place we *really* have a problem (and have pretty much since AOL days) is in attracting new player to visit the site in the first place and giving it a try. We get a trickle feed from RDI. But they have the same problem. Where are the new players coming from?

Mostly it's word of mouth. Player A finds their way here from RDI (or Greater Realms or something else), gives it a try, and maybe sticks around. Maybe they bring along a few friends. Maybe a few of those lose interest right away, but a few stick around.

Beyond word of mouth, we're very hard to find. And no one has ever really solved that problem. A few people have talked about setting up demos or booths at events, but I am not sure if any of those ever actually drew over any people.

Anyway...to get back on point. Yes, over time we've probably lost more than we've gained, but for the most part the reason we've lost is just the normal rotational cycle that any healthy community goes through. We definitely need to find ways to bring in younger players. Younger players are more likely to have friends they can bring along to play. (At 50+, I don't think I'm going to encounter many people my age that I can convince to try RoH.) We just haven't found effective ways to do that, despite years of discussion. So...for now it's still largely word of mouth.

No real comments to the rest of your original post. It all seemed like stuff worth discussion. Carry on! :)

The thing is, I don't think the treatment of people that I'm requesting is the sort of thing that ever has to end. I feel like what you're asking is "how long do I have to be kind and considerate to someone?" and my answer is, "forever."
Sorry, Eva, and I don't mean to be rude, but I can't get onboard with that. I like to think myself a generally considerate person overall and I think perhaps maybe if you're on a low rank alt specically hunting down new folks that's probably a different thing, but sending an IM from an alt I'm on to the low rank person I'm about to duel to warn them I have a warlord / emerald isn't a thing I'm willing to do. I kinda suck at keeping the identity of my alts a secret as it is, I don't really want to narrow the field of choices further.
Here's another perspective on this. Being a considerate player should not mean having to out all of one's alts. My active characters are known/not a secret, but I think I have one or two that aren't often in play I don't openly discuss. I digress. The last time I was IMd by someone I was dueling that wanted to discuss rank, it was not them giving me a polite head's up that their alt had been a Warlord or better. It came off more like an intimidation technique, showing off, or a complaint. A desire to be able to access their highest ranking character's mods across the board had also been expressed. Had I been a new or thin skinned player, that might have bothered me.
Luna Eva wrote:
2) Ask that no alts attend the low-ranks tournaments:

I know people think that no one will attend the low rank tournaments if alts aren’t allowed. But people have stopped attending them because they know they’re just going to face a bunch of Warlord or Emerald alts. I also don’t encourage my RDI side friends to participate because it’s not truly a low-ranks tournament (see above). Plus the advantages the low-ranks tournaments offer to help low-ranked fighters sometimes disappear when they're earned by an alt who stops showing up for regulation once the tournament is over.

I know that this is not how it was when you were coming up and you might feel that you should be allowed to participate in any tournament you want to. I understand your feeling of unfairness, but the community is struggling now and I’m asking you to make this sacrifice to improve the new-dueler experience.
I've been mulling this over since I read Eva's original post and have been trying to figure out how to address it.

As a general rule, I would not encourage new players to have their first experience in dueling to be any sort of tournament. Tournaments by nature are more competitive environments with a prize of some sort at stake. Asking or not asking folks from the RDI side to come and play is a matter of personal choice, but I think it's better to ask. Prepare them for the fact that some of the characters are all about winning and let them make the choice. Start with regulation duels not tournaments. Not trying to be rude with this, but it might come off that way. Many of the players on the RDI side are thick skinned after dealing BS and would be fine in the dueling environment.

A couple of times I have entered a lower ranked character in the Talon to help fill out the field much like I did a time or two in Madness. It's a situation of if I win, great, if not I won't be disappointed. The point is that some people do it just to take part. That should not be interpreted as throwing matches because that's not what it's about.

I'm going to use Lirssa's situation as an example. She won a barony almost right out the gate of starting to take part in DoS. At some point down the road, her player shouldn't be excluded from a Talon tournament, either with Lirssa or another character because she has held a higher rank. In a way, it would be a punishment, for lack of a better word, to the player and the other characters for having done well as rather new player. It becomes a double edged sword situation.

Let's put into a practical example from the IC point of view. Picture Rhiannon Harker trying to explain to Colleen, Rhiannon Brock, Maggie, or some of her other sisters why they shouldn't have been allowed or ever be allowed to participate in the Talon. Collie would have shrugged it off. For Maggie, however, it would have been heartbreaking. I have similar thoughts regarding other requests in that vein.

Much like Jake, I don't think that my friends not already involved in RoH would be interested.

Oh good, I'm not the only one.
Every single duel it is open and I am looking at it. For all 3 sports. It's my security blanket. Also sometimes my brain just dies and I can't remember what anything does. lol
Good to know I'm not the only one. Sometimes though, depending on who I am dueling, I attempt to not look at it.

Poor, poor Ring of Klytus. Always the odd man out.

Unlike the PC and Talon though, the RoK isn't awarded in a tournament....it's given to the highest ranking non-Mage or ME with the required numbers of duels in the previous cycle.

Just my nickle's worth.

That's why I like ROK the best. It's based all together on regulation and putting out dueling numbers to win the prize.

Definitely! Also, if you're inclined, check out the New Duelist Incentive Package to offer your thoughts on that too!

I will check all of the things!

I like the dueling. The rock paper scissors setup gives it a very Killer Instinct feel, the RDI/RoH connections give both sides more to do, and it gives me a whole other IC direction to go with Will (his frustrations on needing to reign it in instead of beating the other person until they stop moving, and needing some sort of actual strategy).

I think some sort of public mentor availability board might be good, instead of digging through 14 pages of the thread. Would give potential mentors/mentees a simpler way to pair up. Unless there's one I missed somewhere.

My biggest issue is my own schedule. Nothing's going on until just before I need to get off for the night, so if I can get a duel in right as soon as it starts I just might be able to finish it before I'm needing to take off. Like I said though, that's just my problem.

The DoF mentor thread you're referring to wasn't really intended to be a place to shop for a mentor. That's mostly for me to see people picking up new mentees so that I know to add them to the standings. Sorry that wasn't clear and you wasted the time to read through all that.

A list of those open to mentoring is something that was raised in this thread and I agree would be a good idea because, you're right, currently there is not a good way to go about finding help.

Duly noted, and deleted.

I don't know if a mentor list is something that could be coded in... something as simple* as an option in your profile info to click that would send your name to a list, or if it would be a text list someone would have to update. Seems like there's a dedicated enough group here that either could work. Most recent activity date would also be good with each name, just so you don't think you';re being ignored by someone who hasn't been on in like 5 years.

*I say simple, but I don't know who maintains the code or how simple it really is, so I won't make any assumptions.
