Historic Defense Match Looms - A Look Back At Two Historical Runs
By: Colin Talvitie

In light of the upcoming historic challenge match between Anubis Karos and Captain Futility (Matt Simon), I figured it’d be worthwhile to compare their consecutive defense records. Ironic that these two blokes are fighting one another this time out.
Each defended an opal 9 times in a row which even I’ve got to admit is a pretty impressive feat. If Captain Futility beats Anubis, he’ll accomplish something nobody’s ever done before – 10 consecutive title defenses!
I'm not here to deride either this time around (shocking, I know - it'd be so easy, too, especially with all of those invalid challenged attempts by Anubis). I just wanted to take a look to see which of these two ran through their first 9 defenses in a more impressive fashion? Let’s take a look…and remember, the more of you who read this, the more pay I get. So tell your mates to read up!
Going back in time, you’ll remember that Anubis started his run with FireStar by besting Koyliak VanDuran-Simon (at the time, just Koyliak VanDuran) who’d been appointed champion-proxy for the drunkard Mur Ollavan who didn’t bother responding to Anubis’ challenge.
Captain Futility acquired IceDancer by coming out on top of an 8-person tournament. To this day, I imagine those other 7 are still wondering how they allowed Captain Futility to beat them.
As far as defenses go, here’re a few stats. As a note of interest, Anubis’ first 5 defenses took place within a six-week period (April 23rd-June 2nd, 2007).
Total Duels – Anubis (20); Matt (22)
Total Rounds – Anubis (181); Matt (174)
Points For – Anubis (99); Matt (101)
Points Against – Anubis (59); Matt (71)
Sudden Death – Anubis (4 times, all in the 1st duel of the match; Defense #4, 5, 8 and 9); Matt (7 times, 5 in the first duel of the match, 1 in the second and 1 in the third; Defense #1, 3– first and third duels, 4-first and second duels, 6 and 8)
Defense Duels Lost – Anubis (2: 2nd duel of 2nd defense & 2nd duel of 9th defense); Matt (5: 2nd duel of 2nd, 3rd and 4th defenses & 1st duel of 9th defense)
Won Challenge in 2 Duels – Anubis (7: all except 2nd and 9th); Matt (5; all except 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 9th)
Shutouts – Anubis (1; 3rd defense, 1st duel vs. Artemus Kurgen); Matt (7th defense, 2nd duel vs. Mur Ollavan)
Length of Reign – Anubis (926 days: April 9, 2007-Oct. 20, 2009 - 2 years, 6 months, 12 days); Matt, as of tomorrow’s challenge date (986 days: June 23, 2010-March 4, 2013 - 2 years, 8 months, 10 days as of 3/4/13)
All in all, Anubis beat his opponents quicker, lost fewer duels and wound up in fewer Sudden Death situations. What’s this mean for tomorrow? One helluva match, that’s what! With this Hannibal storm, I recommend you folk stay inside, grab a pint and watch this one from the comfort of your own homes!

A large turned out to see the results of this much hyped matched. If you weren't there, or watching on television, you missed out. Nubes was given first choice of rings, allowing for Old Man Simon to have his pick in the second match with the threat of being sent to the Pit should a tie breaker be needed. Nubes picked Styx and Old Man Simon started strong in the first match, but Nubes kept it close and tied 3-3 in the eighth round. Old Man Simon took the lead again in the ninth and sealed his first victory of the night with a trade.
In the second match, Old Man Simon elected to stay on an ice covered Styx. Despite the display from the opal, Nubes managed to stay close throughout and put them into Sudden Death after nine rounds. But ice won out in eleven leaving Old Man Simon taking it two in two. A good show that puts him in the lead with ten for most successful defenses in one opal reign.
Grats to the Old Man. I'd wish y'better luck next time Nubes... but I got a feeling that's not in my interest.
Anyone suffering damage from the Old Man's ice display should address their grievances accordingly.

I suffered damage to mine right eye! An ice shard from the challenge stabbed me in mine eye and I am unable to see out of it!DUEL Candy wrote:Anyone suffering damage from the Old Man's ice display should address their grievances accordingly.
Everything is dark! I demand access to the Water Towers books as payment for this act or I will have to take it to the courts!
As payment for the damage suffered to mine eye, I have taken your lagoon as mine own.
I believe this trade to be fair and just under the laws of the margretville dance.
