Overlord Island, February 17, 2013, 10 PM
Renegade Baron Rakeesh Sah Tarna vs. Overlord Candy Hart
With remodeling wrapping up in the Arena and Annex, the challenge to the Overlord will be held on the beach of the Island. Staff are present to guide arriving guests to the area set up for the challenge and to kindly suggest guests do not wander further than that. For those not interested in listening to the helpful suggestion, Clockwork robot soldiers—courtesy of Dillon T. Jones—wait beyond the perimeter to be more convincing. If pressed, the staff might indicate that the additional security is due to a certain incident from Wednesday morning. Those present that morning can still remember the smell. Torches will also be useful in guiding the path. Bonfires burn around the central location for the challenge, offering additional light and heat. Though, who needs bonfires with the Overlord herself present?
A large singular ring has been set up on the beach, the sands marked by stones and dry driftwood. Two mage healers, Rufus and Gustav—twin brothers with blonde hair dusted with grey, stand to the side of the ring to maintain the wards. It is hoped that the pair are able to set aside all personal feelings toward the renegade baron for this task. Seating and tables are arranged outside of the ring for the comfort of those who desire to watch the challenge. A deep brown wicker couch with lime green cushions and pillows is provided for tonight's official and two servers stand by to take care of any food or drink needs the caller may have while overseeing the proceedings.
A white and blue striped tent indicate where food and drink can be found for all others. The manor's kitchen staff have supplied a small buffet line up that consists of crispy five-spice pork ribs, honey soy garlic chicken wings, shrimp gyoza dumplings, vegetable spring rolls (fried), Chinese donuts, Chinese egg tarts, and the featured dish for the night—lion's head meatballs (made of pork). Bottled water, Badsider, Silver Mark's energy drink: Blue, and a selection of soda are available in coolers. For those that desire something with a little more kick, a small bar is set up at one end of the tent. The two girls manning the bar are skilled at mixing and flirting and look forward to generous tips.
((Will use the RoH Arena chatroom but the setting is the Overlord Island))

Unless Baron Kalamere would wish to declare Old Temple renegade, I declare him loyal to the Overlord.

You DO realize you have -NO- right to declare Anything of Any Baron unless they have NOT declared withing seven days of winning title, right?
Or is this another one of your idiotic proposals?
"4. When an Overlord is dethroned all Barons must declare alignment within one week, to the Standings Keeper, or their alignment is set by the new Overlord."
Learn to read.

Rakeesh,
Stop trying to impose your haphazard will upon this city and its citizens. Kalamere has a week to make his own decision. After that, if he chooses not to align himself, you can determine whether he'll stand loyal or renegade. Your impatience and impertinence are grating. That you continually repeat and engage in the same destructive behavior is infuriating and offensive.
You keep rushing headlong into decisions - that is one reason, among many, that you will not last long as Overlord.
If I'm fortunate enough to be first in line, expect my challenge for your newfound title.

G'nort, do you truly consider yourself still relevant?
I'm well aware of the rules. I've stated my intention to declare Kalamere loyal; he may still make his own personal decision. I would have done it, more articulately, after the challenge match, but I instead had to defend myself from multiple violent attacks, as Candy had abused her authority to attempt to trap me in the same ring that I defeated her in. I was very disappointed in the entire ordeal, after an evening of honorable proceedings. But no, let's not take a look at those actions.
Strange, what passes for acceptable and what passes as damning in Rhy'Din.
Matt, you are welcome to challenge me, as is your right. It has been a strange night; The Crew champions Candy, who took them to pasture just months ago. Candy's hired staff attempt to help her murder me after I defeat her in the rings. And yet I am the impertinent one, for declaring an intention to make loyal the very same Warlord that acted as my Champion?
Have you really weighed out the logic in all of this?
Never-the-less, your right is your right. Be well.
Sincerely,
Rakeesh Sah Tarna

I'm pretty sure it wasn't Candy who was trying to murder you. And her hired staff was busy containing FireStar's fury. Trying to, anyways. They were protecting the crowd, not trying to hold you in to get murdered. You've been around long enough to know damn well what happened in there, yet here you are trying to sully her name.
Oh, and putting intentions into someone else's mouth is just universally tactless. What's gotten into you? Seriously, you're making me look like a straight up moron, already after having just come back, for trying to support your character despite the actions you've taken, because I thought I knew you. I don't appreciate this shift in your character.
I've been away for way too long to have a dog in this fight, but considering how many bad moves you've made in a row, you can consider the support I had for you withdrawn.
To everyone else, if you'd like to deal with the Myr'khul insurgency in a more responsible manner, come find me.

Neo,
I do sympathize with Candy. I understand, all-too-well, the amount of willpower it takes to not let one of the Opals take hold of your mind. However, that burden and the responsibility of keeping FireStar in check is hers alone, as its bearer. Her hired wizards kept me trapped in the ring while she raged, and during the duel - they did not heal me as they healed her. An ex-Overlord, Tasslehofl, attempted to attack me as well - and would have certainly slain me if I'd allowed for it.
All-in-all, I do not find myself out of place for questioning the judgement of some others, when this sort of activity is swept under the rug while I am criticized for wanting to offer loyalty to Kalamere, who fought a great duel against Tical and championed me. The aftermath is not being brought into question, while I cannot seem to make clear my intentions for helping the city despite my best efforts; in the past week, I have reached out to the major schools in the city to offer my aid in supporting their programs and protecting their children. I am currently in the process of working alongside Bristle Crios and its Mage House to develop a plan to continue to protect mages and non-mages alike.
I have apologized, numerously, for the unforeseen consequences of my now resigned proposal to register mages in the Old Temple District. Despite those tragic consequences, my intention has always been to protect the innocent, including mages. As you may have noticed, I myself am a magic-user living in the Old Temple District.
I will put this incident to bed and move on to what lies ahead. I do not intend to pursue action against Candy, or Tasslehofl, for what happened after the match ended. But it's time for the people of this city to open their eyes and look at what really matters. The pettiness should be beneath us.
Sincerely,
Rakeesh Sah Tarna

Rakeesh,
You did not offer loyalty to Kalamere. You ordered it. "Unless Baron Kalamere would wish to declare Old Temple renegade, I declare him loyal to the Overlord."
Essentially, you've written that unless Kalamere thinks about becoming Renegade, you are ordering him aligned loyal. You didn't write 'Unless Kalamere declares Renegade' or 'Unless Kalamere chooses to align Renegade'. No, you wrote 'Unless Baron Kalamere would wish to become...'. And what if he does wish to become Renegade today and changes his mind tomorrow? Will your order stand?
"I declare." That's no offer. You insult us all by attempting to couch it as such.
Now, before you accuse me of twisting your intent, that is not my goal. Kalamere's alignment is his own. Your wish for Kalamere to align Loyal makes sense as he may be the only Baron who does so. But alignment doesn't matter - your methods, however, do. What your words represent is something much more dangerous than alignment. I know what you meant in writing what you did but others may not. Your words are the only thing they can point to, the only thing you can fall back upon in the future. But your words, once again, are careless. Your actions and decisions continue to be rushed and hasty - you keep replicating this disturbing conduct.
You began this pattern with your ill-advised registration proposal and continue the same behaviors to this day.
You repeat the same mistakes instead of learning from them.
That is why you find yourself opposed. That is why the bulk of this city stands against you.
Yes, I have weighed the logic. I continue to find a lack of discretion and wisdom on your part.
You question what passes as damning - I will tell you: your actions and your words.
You state that it's time for the people of this city to open their eyes and look at what really matters. You're correct. What matters is one's conduct, one's treatment of their fellow citizens. Yours is continually destructive.
You tell this community that your actions regarding mage-registration were unforeseeable - that's either a blatant lie or one of the most ignorant statements I've seen in years. The consequences of such a proposal were entirely foreseeable because they've happened before with Proposition 37. To claim otherwise is simply unacceptable and insulting to this city. It insults the memories of those who died as a result of that Proposition and your attempt to revive it.
You want to put the matter to rest. Stop focusing upon dueling titles and offer proof, more than severed heads in the midst of a public meeting, of the dream-catchers you would have us believe are infiltrating Old Temple.
Your actions. Your words.
I've yet to see, in the recent past, any good come of either.
--Matthew Algiers Simon

Creature,
I retired from these politics because I choose to be with and among the people to serve them. It was out of respect for the sport which I helped grow from its inception that I waited until your match was ended.
Now, let me be blunt.
Win or lose, I cared not the outcome of your match with Candy. Nor do I now.
I come for your head.

Uuuugh. Do I have to be the voice of reason here, play referee, and be the guy that says that this is going a little bit overboard? Really? I do have to be that guy? Okay, fine.Tasslehofl Momus wrote:Creature,

This is going a little bit overboard. Feel however you want to feel about Rakeesh, I don't care. He's earned it, that I will not contest. But death threats? Really?
I'm not saying he shouldn't be taken to task for his numerous missteps, but this isn't really fixing anything. At all. I thought this was the kind of thing we were trying to avoid. And don't come at me all takling about how his actions have endangered etc etc etc etc yes I know. You know that I know.
I'm not part of the Watch, I haven't been for years. I'm just an adventurer who tries to do good. I'm just saying, this is dumb. Knock it off.

Oh, DH.
Matt says most of what I wanted to before I got the chance, but as to your cute little attempt and an insult, I am far more relevant that you shall ever be, don't make that mistake. If you Truly believe that you can come in here, after how many years away, and think that taking a title will make you important, you're very wrong. If you think that taking a title enables you to attempt to rewrite rules, you are, again, wrong.
You will be challenged, you will lose your title, and you will fade into obscurity, a minor footnote in the historic annals of the world of Rhydin, where as I will always be better known and far more relevant than you could ever hope to be. You will always be about as meaningless as Parsley.
But feel free to make believe that I am not an important member of society. I can use the amusement. After all, it has been gone for about as long as you were. Funny how the entertainment returns with you.
Now, remember how to read the rules and stop making demands you can't back up.
