Okay, so this program looks freakin' awesome, but I have to make a comment.
I actually read the RoH main page and most of RDI boards. Admittedly I only go through the DoS and DoF boards to look for challenges and whatnot, but I was really disappointed that I NEVER heard about this until it started this week.
Someone IMed me to chat about it and I had no clue what he was talking about. I don't mean to complain because it's clearly posted in the Soapbox, but what are the odds of getting something like this to be publicized a little bit more in the future. This thing looks awesome and I'm super sorry I missed out on it.

I don't see how this could've been publicized more. Kalamere posted something in the Soapbox, and on all the IC boards for the sports. I remember seeing an advert for Duel Assassin on the RoH Log Viewer attached to the Madness site at Dueling Zone. It was in the headlines on DZ's front page. I don't think there was a front page announcement made on the RoH site, but from what I've seen Kalamere did an excellent job making people aware of it in the timespan that registration was open. If anyone missed it I don't think the publicity for the event is to blame.

Sorry you missed out on registration. As Harris points out, I tried to cover all the bases, without actually spamming the whole community.
You're not the only person to have missed it though. So: What could I have done better? Or, I guess more specifically, where could I have posted the announcement that you would have seen it? I can add it to my list for next time (assuming the game works out and we want to have a next time.) The RoH main page, I guess?

I could have done the front page announcement. Never thought to do so though, since it's not an officially sanctioned event. I wouldn't have had a problem with doing so, but I think it'd be best that the other coordinators are on board with making the announcement first.

A front page announcement would definitely have caught my attention. Like I said, I'm not trying to complain. I think it's cool as shit and had I known to be looking for it I would have, but I just wasn't. Granted, I duel mostly on RDI hosted nights save for DoF here so I'm probably more out of the loop on these things than most people.
Putting something in the side notes on the front page OR under the announcements would be killer for next time. I'll definitely know to keep an eye out for it. Thanks!

Kal did try to make sure the word was out. But it does bring up a good question. For you, and for anyone else looking for "updates" about events that might be happening in/around dueling...what means of notifications would be useful? How do people get their information fixes?Samilee Burke wrote:A front page announcement would definitely have caught my attention. Like I said, I'm not trying to complain. This is a question above and beyond what updates that might be available on RoH itself. (Neo and folks do a pretty good job of *trying* to post headlines for stuff.) But it does sort of require that people visit those pages to see them.
There IS a Facebook page for RoH. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=52751821186 G makes most of the updates, but the page isn't heavily used (yet). Is FB a good means for people to get updates?
What about Twitter? Xeno (I think) created a Twitter feed for RoH, which has a few subscribers. And Kal has created one for Duel Assassin. I am debating the merits of creating one for Dueling Zone.
RSS? Do people use Google Reader or other RSS Readers to get their updates?
What sorts of media/notifications (above and beyond the front-page headlines on RoH, DZ, etc.) would be useful for people to find out about upcoming tourneys and events, their results, and/or other items of interest about happenings at RoH?

Part of me almost doesn't want to say this because it makes me feel a little guilty inside. I don't read DZN. In fact the only time I ever kept up with DZN was during TDL and IFL.
Facebook would be a pretty decent way of doing things as long as the announcements were sent out in the form of events and not just status updates, yanno? If there's an interesting discussion, make that a status update, but for tournaments or things like Duel Assassin, make them an event with a link to the post describing them. I check my FB daily. I know TONS of RPers who do because we bicker back and forth throughout the day.
I'm sure there are people who use Twitter, but I am not one of them. And I have no idea what an RSS feed is.

Well, hard to take offense. Most of DZN's content came from TDL/IFL (or Madness). It's been a challenge trying to sustain any sort of regular content contributions outside of those events.
The question isn't just applicable to DZ, tho'.
Hmmm...for tourneys or challenges, an event on FB might work...but results posting, less so. And for things like Duel Assassin, or TdR, where it's a season of dueling vice a specific event, I'm not sure an event on FB would work.Samilee Burke wrote: Facebook would be a pretty decent way of doing things as long as the announcements were sent out in the form of events and not just status updates, yanno? Still, thank you for the feedback. Hopefully others will chime in as well.
All of this gets to how best to promote RoH/dueling in general.

It might work if the "event" is the registration deadline (or maybe a day or two before).Hmmm...for tourneys or challenges, an event on FB might work...but results posting, less so. For Duel Assassin, I've made a facebook account (though i should probably have made a group thing rather than an individual thing.. I don't know the ins and outs of FB very well since I don't really use it much), a twitter account and an AIM SN, so that I could link them all together via lifestream. That doesn't help for this season's notification.. but for next season, just adding the SN duelassassin to your buddylist would start showing the news/status updates that I toss up there.

Right, but for on-going things, like TDL, IFL, Madness, TdR, Duel Assassin, where there may be many duels and many nights of activity, a single event notification doesn't provide a way to provide updates during the course of the tourney/competition/etc.Kalamere wrote:It might work if the "event" is the registration deadline (or maybe a day or two before).Hmmm...for tourneys or challenges, an event on FB might work...but results posting, less so. Facebook: RoH Facebook is updated as I remember that I can/should/probably can update it. But anyone who is a member can make posts there as far as I know.
I may have my Facebook and all, but I don't know or am that proficient in FB to make use of all of it's intrusive programing. (I mean, really, do I need CNN.com telling me what one of my Facebook buddies has linked? I'm not even logged into CNN!)
Twitter: I know there's a Rings of Honor twitter, and I follow it, but I don't pay much attention to twitter because I think it's one of the more lame of the social networking sites.
I don't do anything involving RSS as far as I know. I don't even really know what RSS is for sure.
We really do need a "Playables" section here on RoH like they have on the RDI.
I think Playables would be one of the better things we could do.

I would like to suggest that instead of making an FB group, make a fan page. That way you can assign admins and they can go to the page, make an update and it looks like it's coming from Rings of Honor, Duel Assassin, Dueling Zone, or Red Dragon Inn, and thus looking more official or a sanctioned event. The plus to this is you don't need to log out of your regular FB name and log in to the individual page (like Duel Assassin would).
Then whenever you update the fan page, you can link it to Twitter, and Twitter will update too. And Twitter can be subscribed to via RSS.
I can help someone with this if they'd like.

Right, but like Kalamere said the registration deadline would be a good event to put up. Unlike just postings, events come up on your homepage on FB. That's why they're harder to miss. I think posting something like that would be great. I have no idea when TDL, IFL, or Madness start unless there's something big posted about it.Jake wrote:Right, but for on-going things, like TDL, IFL, Madness, TdR, Duel Assassin, where there may be many duels and many nights of activity, a single event notification doesn't provide a way to provide updates during the course of the tourney/competition/etc.Kalamere wrote:It might work if the "event" is the registration deadline (or maybe a day or two before).Hmmm...for tourneys or challenges, an event on FB might work...but results posting, less so.
