Some Training for the Ring

Post by Leuni »

The parchment was in hand with the address written on it as she made her way through town, heading for the docks area. She was familiar with it, but the trip took her right by the place she used to work.

She still missed that 'ol coot, and the small unobtrusive little bar, which got shut down with his death on the night of the Ball. That night held sorrowful memories....

As she passed by, she could see the place was still in disrepair, even more so since the place had been ransacked for everything people could get their hands on. Even the bar itself was gone, torn out and taken along with the grill and panelling. The place was slowly getting torn down by the rabel of the docks, like a fallen tree by amazonian ants.

It was clear that nobody cared about the place.

Although the majority of the tree had been removed, the stump was still there between the sidewalk and pavement of the street. Leun paused long enough to get a generalized count of the rings. The tree had been well over a hundred years old, pushing an additional fifty.

She shook the thoughts away, focusing herself to the future. It would do no good to dwell in the past.

A few more blocks down the way is where she came to the place Sylus had written down to go. It had only been a few days since then and she had managed to get in a few duels in between.

Her thoughts wandered to that night. It bothered her to think about it.

The thought occured to her to flat out invite some along with her here, or to stop by. And then it occured to her that it might not be a good idea to do so without asking first. Sylus wasn't someone that she wanted to be on his bad side. She'd make a point to speak to him first.

She pulled the paper from her pocket and double checked the address ..... Her gaze wandered over the place, brown hues taking in details before she'd step up to the door.

As if sensing her approach the door swung upon with an eerie creak of worn hinges in much need of being oiled or replaced. From the entryway he showed a large flat-style room with hardwood floors and barely any furnishings at all. A couch here or there with a nearby table and chair, all pushed to the outer edges of the space. In the middle stood several training dummies all bolted to the floor. Their wooden and straw bodies hanging like crucified remnants of a scare-crow massacre with painted faces staring out in blank expressions.

Off to the side of this training field one could just barely make out painted circles with roughly a fifteen diameter. It wouldn’t be too far a leap to note them as dueling rings. However some held strange items from manacles bolted to the floor, or even a single set placed with care in the middle of a second ring. Though not all could be seen, there seemed to be enough space to hold four of such rings besides the training area. Panning over, the entire back wall held various weapons from basic to some rather exotic looking items. Besides this collection several barrels seemed to hold wooden versions of the weapons on the wall.

For the time it appeared no one was in the main room however in the middle of the floor there appeared to be a note pierced in place by a belt-knife. Within were instructions.

"Leuni,

Take the katana that is along the back wall between the Halberd and Warhammer down and pick a practice dummy. Perform twenty lunges to warm-up. If I'm not back by then feel free to look around. I have also included a basic diagram on form in the off-chance something goes wrong so you don't hurt yourself.

Sylus."

Just as he wrote, beneath the words was a small diagram on how to perform the lunge showing her how to grip the hilt with both hands and create a fulcrum with one's wrists. This in turn generates centrifical force from the hips and shoulders to create enough strength not only to pierce one's opponent but give the blow a bit of stopping power.

A step up to the door with hand poised ready to knock when the unexpected happened that would have her standing there, staring at the door thinking about her mother. Doors would come open on their own in their house when her mother was alive, if her mother wanted them to. Sometimes her father would mimic the same thing, opening a door seemingly with just a wave of his hand.

Leuni half expected to see someone either on the other side of the door or else somewhere in the room. She was a bit disappointed when no one seemed to be there and indicated so with a slow exhale while she moved further in, peering round the back of the door, dark hues shifting their gaze to look around the room as steps were taken to spin her direction round towards its center

The place was far bigger and more open then she had expected. It wasn't a living place, as she took it for on the outside, at least not one she would expect anyone to call a real home. It was more like a training center. It certainly didn't look like one could expect this from the outside.....

She paused after a few steps, listening to the sounds of the place and taking in the view of the practice dummies, the sparing rings, the manicles and the various weapons along the far wall. Her gaze came back and was finally drawn to the knife sticking out of the floor pinning the note in place. With a curious brow lifted, she meandered that way.

Crouching down, she pulled the blade from the floor and picked up the note. She smoothed it down over her thigh and began to read it while she slowly stood up.

Sylus."

The first thing that caught her attention was the spelling of her name. Most people spelled it wrong, but he'd gotten it right. Then a smirk formed with the roll of her eyes as she finished reading the note.

"Right... thanks..." she muttered sarcastically and looked back to the note for a few moments, studying the details with thoughtfulness.

She moved to one of the tables and set the note down, leaving the knife lay beside it. Then she walked round the room on her way over to the weapons on the wall, taking a good look at the manicles along the way. Taking the katana off the wall, she paused to hold it, testing the feel of it in her hands. For a moment or two, she held it in both, mimicking the moves in the diagram.

Satisfied, she moved back to the front door, peered out into the street for a moment before she closed the door. She wanted to be able to hear anyone come in, if they came that way.

On to the practice dummy.... she moved to stand before it. Once again she gripped the weapon with both hands as shown. It felt awkward. She had been training with the use of one hand, not two. Still, she practiced a few twirls of her wrists before she attempted the lunge for the first time.

The sword arced up too high and it glazed across the top of the dummy's shoulder when she thrust. It was a total miss.

She let out a sigh and went back to the directions again, taking a moment to look them over again. Thinking she understood, she went back to the dummy to try again.

This time pulling back her elbow and letting it shift the flow of motion for a more direct line in the thrust. This proved better but the twirl of her wrists was awkward and stiff.

She sighed again and closed her eyes, thinking back to when she first met Sylus and to the time she watched him duel in the rings after that. She remembered watching the way he twirled his wrists, the smoothness and control of the flow of it.

Opening her eyes, she spent several moments just twirling her wrists and flowing that into a position to thrust, though never going through with it. She'd just let it flow back to twirling and round again. Finally she nodded and re adjusted her stance...

She held the sword at the ready, then slowly spinning it with the turn of her wrists before she flowed the move pulling the right elbow back, forearm paralell to the floor, body turned slightly to the side, and thrusting, from the momentum of the spin of her wrist, forward into the dummy at about mid chest. The blade sliced through the material and she stepped back, pulling the steel with her.

A broad smile crossed her face. "there... Take that you foul beast." she murmered, amused that the expression on the dummy seemed to take on a surprised edge to the otherwise blank stare.

She returned to the lunges, doing several of them in a row in quick succession, developing a sort of dancing step to her moves.

"That everything Sylus?" Mitchel Flagstaff looked up from puting a few pounds of salmon onto some old newspapers long enough to ask before tying off the bundle.

"Looks about right, want to throw it on my tab? I'll cover the rest next week." Digging through the pouch at his waist Sylus took out twenty nobels and put them on the counter to cover labor.

"That works, I know you're good for it." With a grin Mitchel righted himself and brushed off his hands. "I'll see you tomorrow night for the next lesson. I think what you pay for the fish every week ya get back at the lessons, know that?"

"Just how things work out sometimes, until then remember to keep that flank of yours guarded, Jameson has tagged you in the same spot fifteen times now." Fish in hand, he turned from the monger and returned to his flat less than a few blocks away. Drifting up the sidewalk her scent lingered in the air. She's here, good. Sylus thought to himself upon opening the door in time to see her going through her latest lunge.

"What number ya on?" Without looking at her, Sylus moved towards a side area lifting up a panel in the floor filled with crushed ice and about half dozen fish all ready laying in wait of the fry pan. Undoing the bundle of salmon he just dropped the batch within and let the lid fall shut.

Turning around he started the faucet to wash the fish from his hands and dry them on an old towel. From the ice-chest under the sink he took out a beer and popped the top before heading over to see how she was doing.

Barret and Allie stayed in the backyard like good little dogs for all of ten minutes and fifty two seconds. Then they began to patrol round the yard, poking and prodding with their noses while they systematically tested for the weak point. Leuni had almost gotten her whole fence repaired because of the two trying to find ways to get out. They’d always break down that weak point. Just when she thought she had fixed all the weak spots, the two dogs would find another point. Today was no different.

Before long, the two dogs were snooping along the streets, following the scent of their master. By the time they neared the building where Leuni was practicing, the two dogs were picking up a few more scents along the way. The scent of salmon baited them on faster, yet something about the other scent caused them to linger warily. It was why the two didn’t trail too closely as they followed Sylus the last few blocks.

Sniffing the air, the two dogs knew where Leuni was and so they each picked a spot to either side of the building to watch and wait for her to leave.

She heard the turn of the handle and the soft creak of the door turning on its hinges as she was piercing the dummy for the fourteenth time. She glanced that way briefly before she stepped back and shifted her stance so that the dummy was a little more in between herself and Sylus while she continued to lunge.

"What number ya on?"

Truth be told, Leuni had lost count. She knew it was more then ten, though, but exact number had escaped her. Rather then sound like an idiot, she immediately answered, as if she knew.

“ Eighteen…” she replied as she gave another lunge to the dummy.

From then she counted out loud as she finished up two more lunges. The scent of the fish came to her as she finished the last one. Raw fish was the most horrid thing to her, apparent by the exaggerated wrinkling of her nose as she turned from the last lunge and watched Sylus sipping his beer.

“Gee, Honey..…What’s for dinner.....?” a bit of sarcasm in the question. It was obvious she didn’t care for the current scent.

Her head inclined towards the dummy with a slight gesture of the sword towards the same. Then she asked the question that was more important then what was for dinner. “Was I doing them right?”

Ignoring the sarcasm he just watched as she finished out the set he'd asked, though fully acknowledging she'd more than likely done less than requested. Easy enough to fix that, certainly. A sip taken, Sylus moved to stand in front of the test dummy and pointed at a spot center of his upper body just below the breast bone.

"Perform five more, and aim for the spot I just motioned to." He was dead serious about having her stab him with the katana. Even took another drink while watching her.

The point of the sword was dropped back down as Sylus stepped between her and the practice dummy. She thought nothing of it when he pointed to the spot on himself and told her to do it again. It was when she waited a moment for him to move... and he didn't... that her expression sobered with realization. He wanted her to thrust at him, not at the dummy.

Delicate brows furrowed above soft brown hues.

At first she wanted to refuse, afraid she'd hurt him. But the more she stared at him... standing there sipping his beer... the more she realized he was serious, and a relief eased into her expression. There was probably no way she could hurt him at this point, or so she was silently talking herself into believing. After all, he was her teacher, far more accomplished at this whole thing then she. She even hoped this would show her what to do if she were the one being stabbed at. At the end of the mental struggle, she put her trust in him.

She acknowledged the request with a nod of her head. Then she stepped back appropriately to prepare the thrust attack.

"I hope you plan to move out of the way or something. I'd hate to be the student who killed their teacher on the first lesson." The comment was a bit dry with sarcasm. Obviously, she didn't really believe he'd stay there or let her get her sword into him.

Drawing the sword up at the ready, she started with a slow spin of her wrists for one cycle before swiftly increasing the momentum of the spin, twirling the sword with the turn of her wrists before she flowed the move pulling the right elbow back, forearm paralell to the floor, body turned slightly to the side. Then as one foot stepped forward the other was firmly planted on the floor pushing forward and her body turned with the thrust to face him and sending the blade forward directly for that mark Sylus had pointed to with his finger.... right at the spot center of his upper body just below the breast bone.

Just as the blade bit in with the firmness of connecting against his chest the pressure eased, blade passing through bone and blood as if through water. Idly he watched her, still drinking his beer hearing the weapon connect with the dummy behind him. Another sip of his beer and Sylus moved forward as if unable to feel the blade and went to adjust her grip.

Then the weird part came, he stepped off to the side, her weapon passing through him like light through smoke. With a critical eye he looked over her form, the angle of her hip, and foot placement before nodding once.

"Not too bad...still some work to do, but you're on the right track. Just glad I didn't let you hurt me, or that could have been uncomfortable."

Slightly almond shaped eyes buldged brown hues wide open as the blade seemed to pierce his skin. Her scream had already started the moment just before the impact. The sucking in of air gave almost a horn like effect followed by the high pitch of her voice as she screamed. She realized too late that he wasn't moving and there was nothing she could do to change the momentum. She fully expected the pop of skin and crunch of bone as the blade would slice through.

Her scream stopped short as she realized there was no pop of skin and crunch of bone. There wasn't even any squirt of blood rising in the air as she had expected. Shock of one kind traded placed for a new kind of shock from lack of resistance, which nearly caused her to fall forward. The blade suddenly cut through effortlessly until it sunk into the dummy. She stood there, staring at Sylus watching him with shock as he moved closer to her and adjusted her grip.

By then she understood it had something to do with magic, perhaps just an illusion of the sword or himself. Whatever means he was using to not be hurt, she was glad he had used it. She finally let herself breathe and laughed quietly at herself as he stepped to the side.
Sylus Kurgen wrote:"Not too bad...still some work to do, but you're on the right track. Just glad I didn't let you hurt me, or that could have been uncomfortable."
"Yeah... me too." she was shaking her head, though a grin was visible as she sighed relief and yanked the blade out of the dummy. "I'll just finish the other four..... without you there of course."

She took a step back and went through four more thrusts, making sure to keep her grip adjusted like he showed her. And naturally, she aimed for that spot, but on the dummy instead. Between the scare she'd just had and the workout of thrusting twenty something times, she was beginning to glow with the first signs of sweat breaking across her skin.

When the thrusts were done she turned to him once more, briefly eyeing the brew he was sipping. She didn't let her gaze linger, but brought it back to him. Mirth played in her eyes, though she didn't voice her thoughts. "So...What's next?"

"What's next she asks." A teasing note to his words before stepping back, brew in one hand, the other drawing one of the scimitars at his hip. The curving blade seems to weave back and forth like a serpent waiting to strike as he watches her.

"Well, you've got the thrust down. Every attack is really a thrust when viewed properly. You're piercing substance with another, severing nerve endings and flesh or cloth when it's for points such as the arena. High attacks you're swiping at shoulders or the neck, lower assaults going for legs and thighs, superficial injuries at best." A slow roll sets his blade in motion, demonstrating each.

"Now I know "A cut to the neck superficial?' sounds like I don't know what I'm saying. But they are survivable even though the chance at irreparable damage to the vocal cords is a given. Yes there are major arteries in the neck and legs that can make a person bleed out, however those are the closest guarded. A person will sacrifice an injury to an unimportant place to protect a vital. In a fist fight a male fighter will protect his groin, eyes, and throat over his knees or abdoman."

Watching his every move intently, listening to his every word. If there was one thing she didn't think, it was that he didn't know what he was talking about. If anything, her brow had only lifted with surprise. Had she seen anyone do a head shot before? she didn't think so and would not have thought about doing that herself. Still, hearing him say it told her that there were some who might call in a headshot. She made a note to learn some counter moves to avoid or lessen the severity of blows like that.

"I would hate to lose my head...." she grinned, commenting when a moment presented itself. "But I see what you mean. I would sacrifice my arm or hand to protect my neck. Although, I would hope there are other ways to move to lessen the severity of blows like that, moves that would also help save extremeties. How would you handle head/neck blows from various angles?"

"In time. There is a universal rule in martial combat. Master the basics and you've mastered all you need to know. Everything after is flash. A mundane parry is just as effective as one with lots of flourish. You learn the movements, and then you add movement. " He shook his head at how she wanted to jump into the thick of things.

"Combat is as much a battle of wits as it is weapons. Every movement is connected to the one before it and the ones ahead, a Flow, if you will. You perform one action to draw out another from your opponent just as they are out to do the same to you. Feints within feints within feints within feints." His right hand came up then showing the bottle, almost empty, still wavering back and forth. "Before I'm done you'll be more like a rare serpent that displays it's tail as a harmless target..." In the blinking, literally, of an eye his fingers let go and the scimitar in his left would appear as magic under the bottom, holding it up. "...As the head strikes from within the coiled body."

She recoiled slightly from the shake of his head, uncertain what she'd done to give him the impression of jumping into anything. To her, she was just asking a question. However, she listened and took his words into consideration, nodding her understanding of them.

The movement had her take a step back in surprise, brown hues flared wide. She laughed. "Whoa, now there's a switch! Nice trick... will that be my first feat, to master the sword catching beer bottle move? I'm idly disappointed it wasn't the sword swallowing move though I'm sure I'll get over it soon enough... That is, if its somewhere on the list of flash and tricks?"

The thought made her chuckle a bit. Even though she was teasing him, somewhere in the depths of her gaze was a look that she most certainly took him serious, even a thankdul humbleness that she had him for a teacher.
