DoS Madness 2009 Preliminary Round Review
By Jack Smith
It’s DoS Madness 2009! I get to review something! Like a guy who’s been wandering in the desert for months and *finally* gets that first mouthful of water . . . . . . . .ahhhhhhhh.
It’s been a long year for me. No TDL. No IFL. No Dueling Zone! I’ve resorted to reviewing Ants vs. Slugs in my backyard! But now it’s time for me to shine! So here is my review for the Preliminary Round of DoS Madness 2009 . . . . .
ON WITH THE PREVIEWS!
Previews are based upon each dueler's records from the last year: from the 5/15/2008 standings, to the current 5/14/2009 standings. In terms of DoS WoL, I will indicate (0) for someone that has been a commoner with no WoL gained the past year.
Gondar Division
( 8 ) Dawn Shadowsbane-Karos vs. ( 9 ) Ghranit Jones
Dawn’s stats:
DoS: (0) WoL
Ghranit’s stats:
DoS -1 WoL
Dawn is notorious, infamous if you will, for being married to the grumpy Anubis. Then again, she’s a big scary demoness, so maybe that has something to do with his disposition. Kids, that’s why you think before you marry. She’ll be returning to the Swords ring for the first time in over a year. Her opponent will be the lovable little dwarf from TDL’s Atrebla, Ghranit. And is Jones really his last name? Didn’t know there was a Jones family in the Dwarf world! Maybe they have Smiths too! I have cousins I didn’t even know of! Anyhoo, Ghranit made a play for TDL Rookie of the year in 2008, so I’m gonna pick him. Whoever wins this match will have their hands full with the lizardman Bran and his SCALY CLAW OF DOOM . . . oh wait, this isn’t Duel of Magic!
Xenograg Division
( 8 ) Captain Stephen Kidd vs. ( 9 ) Green
Stephen’s stats:
DoS: (0) WoL
Green’s stats:
DoS: What stats?
Stephen’s well known for being (formerly) married to the Little Miss HAWT Jewell . . . aw, shoot. I have to put another dollar in the “Matt Franco” jar. Anyway, Stephen’s been seen here and there in the Arena, so maybe he’ll do well enough against his opponent . . . . Green? With envy? Who is this guy? Soylent Green? Maybe . . . . . HE’S MADE OF PEOPLE! Kids, ask your parents about that joke. Or grandparents as the case may be. If Green happens to win his first ever match in DoS, he’ll be facing former Overlord and current Diamond Jaycy . . . so it’s not easy being Green. HA! I kill me! Did you see how I slipped that in there?? Well, *I* thought it was funny.
Dalamar Division
( 8 ) April Acerino vs. ( 9 ) Alisa Katz
April’s Stats:
DoS: (0) WoL
Alisa’s Stats:
DoS (0) WoL
April was last seen as the smokin’ hot, tough-as-nails babe on TDL Champion King’s Gambit. Then again, standing next to the creepy Xanth Van Bokkelen would make anyone look hot. She’ll begin her Madness quest against Alisa. Alisa withdrew before the start of last year’s tournament, so maybe she felt she needed another year to prepare! It never hurts to be *too* prepared . . . especially when after this match you’d be facing the unhinged Xeric Mues. We’ll see if April is really as tough as she seems, or if all those Tae Bo classes will pay off for Alisa.
Athlstan Division
( 8 ) Tsu Nami vs. ( 9 ) Lily Doucet
Tsu’s Stats:
DoS: -2 WoL
Lily’s Stats:
DoS: (0) WoL
Tsu Nami once held the rank of Swordsman at the beginning of the year, but now he’s back down with the mere mortals at Commoner. Apparently, being buddies with Neo means he’s going to be calling out his moves before he performs them. Piece of advice, Tsu . . . it might not be a good idea to let your opponent know what you’re going to do before you do it. But nobody listens to me anyway. His opponent is making her first appearance in the rings (that I know of), Lily. Well, she certainly has a cute name, maybe she’s a hottie. Either way, the winner of this match will face a challenge in the form of YOUR current Overlord, Tormay Eludes! He’s sure to have Taneth in his corner with her LOADED SNACKBASKET OF DEATH, so it will be a tall order for whoever wins this match.
The Bottom Line:
Being the preliminary round, you’re getting to see some new faces and future stars of the Arena. It will be interesting to see if someone in this round will make a name for themselves by going into the first round and bumping off a Number One seed. But we’ll get to that in the weeks ahead! Enjoy the duels, and look out for my DoS Madness Round One Review! Later.

DoS Madness 2009 Round One Preview
By Jack Smith
The appetizer is over, and now it’s time for the main course! DoS Madness, the First Round, is being served up, piping hot, for all your greedy little stomachs! Congratulations to the winners of the Preliminary round, but don't hurt yourself patting yourselves on the back, because we’ve got a lot more duels to go before the end! And without further ado . . . .
LET THE PREVIEWS BEGIN!
Previews are based upon each dueler's records from the start of the first Madness Tournament, according to the 5/15/2008 standings, to the current 5/14/2009 standings. In terms of DoS WoL, I will indicate (0) for someone that has been a commoner with no WoL gained the past year.
Xenograg Division
(1) Jaycy Ashleana vs. (9) Green
Jaycy’s stats:
DoS: -2 WoL, Warlord
Green’s stats:
DoS: (0) WoL, Commoner
Jaycy is YOUR current Diamond and in the midst of the Intergender War over at the Outback, but it’s a whole different ballgame now – It’s DOS MADNESS, baby! We’ll see if she can continue her quest for female empowerment against the Tournament’s most famous yet least visible face, Green! He/She got the GREEN LIGHT (snicker) to the First Round after Zug withdrew from the Tournament. Green is going to be this year’s BOOF Valentine! GO GREEN! (For the environment!)
(2) Mz. Querylon Smith vs. ( 8 ) Stephen Kidd
Querylon’s stats:
DoS: -3 WoL, Warlord
Stephen’s stats:
DoS: (0) WoL, Commoner
Stephen was able to bypass the Preliminary round due to a withdrawal by the orc Zug, so he’ll be facing the former Mrs. Smith (no relation), Querylon. Querylon and her cute little wriggling nose wasn’t as active this year as she was the year before, but she’s still ranked at Warlord, so she should be able to pull out the victory against the pirate.
(3) Jay Capistrano vs. (6) Zara Coalwood
Jay’s stats:
DoS: +3 WoL, Master-at-Arms
Zara’s stats:
DoS: -1 WoL, Master-at-Arms
Hey, it’s our favorite blue-haired punk with the long nickname, “When the Swallows Come Back to” Capistrano! He doesn’t really have that nickname, I gave it to him. Apparently, the nickname worked, because he’s risen in rank from Swordsman to Master-at-Arms over the course of the year, and he’s been given the third seed. He’ll be facing Zara, who’s the same rank as he is. Other than tending the bar at the Red Dragon Inn, I don’t know much about Zara, so I’m going to say that Jay will continue his upward momentum.
(4) Artemus Kurgen vs. (5) Jewell Ravenlock
Artemus’s stats:
DoS: 0 WoL, Warlord
Jewell’s stats:
DoS: 0 WoL, Commoner
Artemus is known as the former Keeper of the Tower of Earth, and Captain of the IFL team Roshambo. His return to the Arena will be against everyone’s favorite blue-haired fairy, Jewell. Jewell hasn’t been around the Arena much either, but she was showing signs of greatness in TDL as well as DoS the year prior. We’ll see if Jewell can pick up where she left off, or whether Artemus will show why he is a Warlord. I’ll go with Jewell in an upset. Not that I’m biased or anything, no, of course not.

DoS Madness Round One Preview (Gondar)
Gondar Division
(1) Bran Bale vs. ( 8 ) Dawn Shadowsbane-Karos
Bran’s stats:
DoS: +13 WoL, Warlord
One Baron defense, One Baron defense as Champion, Won Baron’s Tournament, One Overlord Reign, 2nd place Valentine Charity Tournament
Dawn’s stats:
DoS: (0) WoL, Commoner
Bran had arguably the best year of the 36 duelers assembled for this tournament. He had the 2nd most WoL gained, he defended the Battlefield Park barony once, championed a barony once, won a Baron’s Tournament, and became Overlord! And rather than take a nice, long rest, he’s back for more. His opponent from the Preliminary round will be Dawn. Apparently, my sources tell me Dawn isn’t really a demoness. Well, she’s big, she’s mean, and she’s scary, so that makes her a demoness in my book. Bran to win.
(2) Gaius Cassius Maximus vs. (7) Maranya Valkonan
Cassius’ stats:
DoS: -3 WoL, Baron
One Baron Ring won, One Baron defense
Maranya’s stats:
DoS: (0) WoL, Commoner
Cassius has added another Baron reign to his illustrious career, and has been able to defend it once against Guillermus. At this point, Cass has had more Baron reigns than Caligula had psychotic episodes. And speaking of psychotic episodes, he’ll be looking to UNLEASH HELL on one of this year’s newcomers, the Russian doctor Maranya and her STETHESCOPE OF DOOM. Maranya will have her Tournament dreams flatline in the First Round; Cass should advance. She looks pretty smokin’ in that white lab coat though, doesn’t she? Ahem.
(3) Rena Cronin vs. (6) Vincent Smith (No relation)
Rena’s stats:
DoS: +2 WoL, Baron
2nd Place Winter 09 WLT, One Baron Ring won
Vince’s stats:
DoS: -1 WoL, Master-at-Arms
Rena had a good year, having taken second place in the Winter Warlord Tournament, and used her prize to claim a Baron ring. The Arena’s quietest Baroness will be facing YOUR current ArchMage, Vincent Smith. TRIVIA ALERT! Vinny is the only dueler other than Avery Shiv Blade to hold two of the three Crown Jewels at the same time, having been both Diamond and ArchMage from January to March of 2007. This isn’t Magic or Fists, however, so I’ll pick Rena.
(4) Kheldar Drasinia vs. (5) Matt Simon
Kheldar’s stats:
DoS: -1 WoL, Warlord
3rd Place Winter 09 WLT
Matt’s stats:
DoS: +3 WoL, Master-at-Arms
16th Talon of Redwin
In one of those Deus-Ex-Machina-Twist-Of-Fates, the two good friends that run the Outback are forced to face each other in the First Round. Kheldar’s biggest achievement in the Arena this past year was 3rd place in the Winter Warlord Tournament, which earned him a shot at the Overlord. Matt, in comparison, won the Talon of Redwin once. Matt is the benevolent governor of RhyDin City, maybe he’ll give me a government grant to perfect my previewing techniques! No? Then I’d say that gives Kheldar the edge here.

DoS Madness Preview (Dalamar Division)
Dalamar Division
(1) Xeric Mues vs. ( 8 ) April Acerino
Xeric’s stats:
DoS: +14 WoL, Warlord
1st Place Summer 09 WLT, One Overlord Reign
April’s stats:
DoS: (0) WoL, Commoner
Xeric had a great year, once again collecting the most WoL of any dueler in the Madness Tournament. He also won the Summer Warlord Tournament, and converted that into his first Overlord reign. He’ll be facing April, who showed Alisa just how tough she is in the Preliminary round. Xeric should win this one, but it will be interesting to see how much of a fight April gives him.
(2) Aya Hayashibara vs. (7) Anushka Sirelis
Aya’s stats:
DoS: +2 WoL, Baron
Two Baron defenses
Anushka’s stats:
DoS: +2 WoL, Swordswoman
Aya was a Baron during this past year, and racked up two defenses during that time. Aya is known for her cold disposition and lack of mercy, so the sweet-natured Anushka is going to have her hands full. Anushka is known for being on TDL’s Team Twilight, and she’s used that experience to rise in rank to Swordswoman. Anushka better hope that’s enough to avoid a slicing and dicing by Aya, who I think will take the win here.
(3) Anubis Karos vs. (6) Neo Eternity
Anubis’s stats:
DoS: +2 WoL, Warlord
Neo’s stats:
DoS: (0) WoL, Commoner
The Arena’s favorite bad boy is back, as Anubis gains a third seed in the Dalamar Division. Anubis is a former Overlord and Baron, so there are plenty of reasons to believe that he’ll come out on top in this match. He’ll be facing the Keeper of Water Neo, who isn’t known for his prowess in the Swords ring, but I’m sure he’d love to give Anubis an EGYPTIAN CONNIPTION by pulling the upset.
(4) Salvador Delahada vs. (5) Ticallion Carter
Salvador’s stats:
DoS: +5 WoL, Master-at-Arms
Ticallion’s stats:
DoS: -2 WoL, Warlord
Salvador is one of the bright new stars of the Arena, having made the rank of Master-of-Arms in a short period of time. I’ve been wondering what his secret to success is . . . maybe its because Salvador Delahada sounds like Salvador Dali. That means he melts all over the ring and his opponent stands back and says “Whoaaaa . . . that’s, like, totally surreal! I feel so deep and artsy now!” And then he has them right where he wants them. Hey, it could happen. His opponent is a veteran of the Arena, Ticallion, who made a return to the ring this past year. I’ll go with an upset and pick Salvador.

DoS Madness Preview (Athlstan Division)
Athlstan Division
(1) Tormay Eludes vs. ( 8 ) Tsu Nami
Tormay’s stats:
DoS: +6 WoL, Overlord
One Baron Ring won, Current Overlord with two defenses
Tsu’s stats:
DoS: -2 WoL, Commoner
Tormay had himself one heckuva rookie year in DoS. He used an Overlord Grant to obtain a Barony, then helped purge the Arena of the unstable Drey Starke to become YOUR current Overlord. And he bagged himself a cute fiancée a la Taneth in the process! Some male fairies have all the luck. Anyhoo, Tsu manages to unobtrusively slip into the First Round after Lily no-showed for the Prelims. I don’t think Tsu will be able to slide past Tormay, I’ll take the Overlord to win.
(2) Xanth Van Bokkelen vs. (7) Myria Graziano
Xanth’s stats:
DoS: +1 WoL, Warlord
Myria’s stats:
DoS: 0 WoL, Commoner
Xanth lost the Tower of Earth last month, so he’ll be looking to make somebody pay here in the DoS Madness Tournament. Xanth made the rank of Warlord during the course of the past year, and participated in some Warlord Tournaments. He’ll be facing the newest Graziano on the block, Myria. Myria hasn’t been seen much since she debuted for the Wrecking Crew last year, but it wouldn’t be a DoS Madness Tournament without *one* Graziano! Xanth should get the win.
(3) Wyheree Ravenlock vs. (6) Aja Bird
Wyheree’s stats:
DoS: -2 WoL, Swordswoman
2nd place in Overlord Xeric’s “Be Overlord for a week” Tournament, was Baroness of Dragon’s Gate for week
Aja’s stats:
DoS: (0) WoL, Commoner
What’s cooler than bein’ cool? Wyheree the Ice Mage, of course! She had a tough year, falling from Master-at-Arms to Swordswoman, but she got to be Baroness for a week thanks to former Overlord Xeric’s tournament. She’ll be looking to put the chill on the newly returned Aja and her PIXIE STIX OF DEATH. Aja’s going to need that spunky attitude, because it looks like Wyh has the advantage here.
(4) Locke D’Vestavio vs. (5) Michiko Ito
Locke’s stats:
DoS: +1 WoL, Commoner
Michiko’s stats:
DoS: (0) WoL, Commoner
And finally we have another cool character, the Ice Elf Locke. While he is still ranked as a Commoner, he has shown that he has skills in the ring. He’ll be looking to finally climb the ranks starting here in the First Round, against newcomer Michiko. Michiko must be highly rated by the powers-that-be to be selected as a fifth seed. I think this will be Locke’s year to break out, and he’ll start with a victory here.
The Bottom Line: This looks like a well-balanced tournament, with plenty of veterans mixed with up-and-coming stars. It’s time for duelers like Jewell, Locke, and Jay to take it to the next level. Newcomers like Michiko, Salvador, and Maranya will benefit from the experience they will gain by participating in this Tournament. The only question left is . . . . who’s going to win? We’ll find out in the coming weeks! Enjoy!

If I wasn’t sitting on a bean bag chair, I’d be right on the edge of it! 16 duels have been completed, and the action (and the betting) has been fierce! A perfect shutout! A bunch of shocking upsets! Wyheree ate a snowcone! WHERE WILL IT ALL END??? Don’t you dare change that channel because the Second Round is coming up!
PREVIEWS A GO GO!
Athlstan Division
This division features a couple of upsets, and no one has over 7 WoL. So if you like your Cinderella stories, this division is for you.
(1) Tormay Eludes vs. (5) Michiko Ito
Tormay beat up the quiet Tsu to move onto the second round. I find it strange that a fairy ends up being the bully in a match. Anyway, He’ll be facing Michiko, who was able to defeat Locke with EXTREME SPUNKINESS. Can the macho fairy keep muscling his way through the tournament, or is Michiko just TOO DARN SPUNKY?
(3) Wyheree Ravenlock vs. (7) Myria Graziano
Wyheree gave Aja a one-way trip to the sidelines, which means she gets to move on and face the Last of the Grazianos, Myria. Myria must’ve channeled the power of Chris, Maria, *and* Tony to oust the creepy Xanth and advance. Wyh is going to have her hands full, and we’ll see if Myria can add another chapter to the legacy of the Grazianos.
Gondar Division
This prestigious division includes a total of 13 Diamonds and 2 Triple Crown winners. I’d tell you how many Baronies, but I wouldn’t want to deprive Cassius of another chance to remind everyone just how many.
(1) Bran Bale vs. (5) Matthew Simon
Bran styled and reptiled his way to a win over the ‘demoness’ Dawn, which gave him his second trip to the Sweet Sixteen. He’ll be facing YOUR governor, Matt. Matt made his friend Kheldar tap out, or maybe he just pulled rank. We’ll never know, I guess. Bran’s been more successful in DoS so it looks like he’s got the edge here.
(2) Gaius Cassius Maximus vs. (6) Vincent Smith (no relation)
Cassius dropped a perfect shutout on the rookie Maranya. Welcome to DoS, kid. He’ll be facing a long-time rival in Vinny, who pulled the upset on Rena. Maybe Vinny is looking to gain the final jewel in his own Triple Crown. That will be a tall order against Cassius, who looks unstoppable going into the Second Round.

DoS Madness Preview Round Two
Dalamar Division
This Division came the closest to a 1-2-3-4 round, but Ticallion had to spoil the fun. Anyway, this is another division filled with hardcore veterans which should make for some interesting matches.
(1) Xeric Mues vs. (5) Ticallion Carter
Xeric had a tough battle with April, but won out in the end. The Mad Russian will take on Ticallion in the Second Round, after he defeated talented newcomer Salvador. Ticallion should provide a challenge for Xeric, and I’ll pick him as my upset special of the week.
(2) Aya Hayashibara vs. (3) Anubis Karos
Aya gave Anushka a lesson in humility to move on in the tournament. She’ll be looking do dish out some ASIAN PERSUASION on Anubis, who defeated Neo. Anubis is no slacker himself, so this should be a must-see duel. TRIVIA ALERT! Aya spelled backwards is “Aya”.

DoS Madness Preview Second Round Xenograg Division
Xenograg Division
And finally we have the Xenograg Division, which features a disproportionate number of blue-haired competitors. Maybe they oughta call this the D’Artainian Division.
(1) Jaycy Ashleana vs. (5) Jewell Ravenlock
Jaycy once again stuck it to males everywhere by eliminating the green rookie, er, the Rookie Green, who turned out to be a hottie! Thanks a lot, Jaycy! And now there’s another hottie in her path, Jewell! Aw, come on! I’m picking Jewell on general principle, because you can never have enough eye candy in these tournaments.
(3) Jay “When the Swallows Come Back To” Capistrano vs. ( 8 ) Stephen Kidd
In a duel of shady characters, we have a pirate and a punk rocker. Well, I’m sure Jay rocks metaphorically, but literally, how should *I* know? Anyhoo, Jay smoked Zara in their match, so things look promising for him. Stephen pulled one of the great upsets of the tournament by eliminating second seed Querylon. Great job Stephen, but I still say this is Jay’s year.
The Bottom Line: Not *too* many upsets this year, but still a fun tournament to watch so far. My Final Four is looking to be Jay, Aya, Cassius, and Tormay. But that could all change if duelers like Michiko, Vincent, and Stephen prove their victories were no fluke! The Second Round looks to be full of action, so don’t miss it! Later!
