Tonks and Lupin died because Rowling felt that she had to kill characters that were ones we felt closer to in order to give you the scope of the war. So that you could feel how serious the situation is.

If she killed off no-name characters, we wouldn't care as much about it. but killing Lupin and Tonks, well, it "tugs on our emotions" a bit more.

Though, in previous books I think killing off Sirius and Dumbledore were more than enough. She didn't really need to kill off so much in this one.

I wanted Moody to survive. I have an appreciation for the grizzled war veteran, so I was a little bummed at that. I was amused and surprised that she killed off Hedwig. It's the owl! And Harry lost his Firebolt.

Lupin and Tonks didn't get to me nearly as much as Fred dying. I hate when really cool and fun characters are killed off, and Fred was that. Dobby's death was ok, but I wasn't really caring about him.

Colin Creevey though was a death that I think is a mistake in her writing. It clearly states that muggleborns are not permitted to Hogwarts once Voldie took over there. Colin was a muggleborn so should never have been at the school in the first place. He is said to be saying he wanted to fight before the battle takes place, so was at school before Harry and Voldie got there. He's too young to apparate, and likely lived too far away to fly on a broom or whatever.

So, why was Colin at Hogwarts?

What happened to Fudge?

What about Pigwidgen and Crookshanks?

Tonks dying was the one that got me, though I can't really say why. I guess I just liked her character. Hedwig sucked, too.

I wonder what happened to Dudley.

And, I was glad my theory was proven correct, in that Snape really wasn't a traitor (ok, he was, just to the bad guys' side). Even at the end of Book 6, I wasn't convinced, and when I watched Movie 5, I really wasn't convinced. If he really was a Voldemort lackey, I don't think he would have tried as hard to teach Harry the Oculmency (or however it's spelled) stuff to block Voldemort from his mind.

I figure Dudley and the Dursleys are all okay. They were hidden and protected. Dudley's turnaround came because of Harry actually saving Dudley from the dementors in book 5. I figure maybe he decided that his parents weren't exactly honest about how freakish and bad wizards and magic is. Plus, Dudley is used to Harry being there. He's always been there. Now they're going seperate.

I imagine that Dudley's shaking Harry's hand becomes a moment of forgiveness for Harry, and maybe he'll even visit Dudders from time to time. He called Dudley "Big D" without any mocking tone or intent of ridicule like he did previously. I think Harry actually forgives Dudley. It was a touching moment.

Snape. Well, I don't know if anyone was really convinced that he was a good guy. I had several theories which were wrong, except for knowing that he was really on Dumbledores side. I was kinda right that he had a thing for Lily, too. His death was the second worst one in the book. So anti-climactic and stupid and worthless. It could have been done better. Wormtails death was the worst.

Wormtail's death could only have been worse if he had been defeated by a rogue slash in round 5.

Tell me about it. It really was lame, not to mention that he didn't really redeem himself as was hinted, or help Harry that much. He just hesitated as he was thinking about it and it cost him. Bland.

I loved the moment of reconciliation between Dudley and Harry. It honestly played out perfectly in my mind as I read it and it truly felt like it fit. And I am sooo not surprised that Al thought Hedwig dying was amusing, but I (being a sissy little girl and all) cried my head off.

I get the reason behind Lupin and Tonks dying, but with them being new parents and all it really hit me hard. Especially after the spat Harry had with Lupin originally.

Fred's death was hard to swallow. It's hard to imagine that the family (or even George) will ever truly be okay after such a hard loss like that.

And the only moment where I literally laughed out loud (other than when George insisted that he could now make a bid for sainthood on the grounds of being "holey") was Harry chewing out Ron and Hermione for kissing right in the midst of fighting.

Same here. It was funny as hell. "Oi! We're in the middle of a war here!"

If they don't keep that line in the movie I'll kill them

Well, they didn't keep "Constant Vigilance" in Order of Pheonix OR Goblet of Fire... so I suspect nothing is beneath them.

Call me a nerd but every so often I go around shouting "CONSTANT VIGILANCE!" It's funny to me. I was mad they killed Moody

re the link: Thanks Karen. I'd tried finding it other ways from Billy's but I'm silly and it wasn't working for me.

Re the contents of the link: Yay, I finally get to know something of what happened (though I'd been reading articles from her many interviews and they had some of that stuff in the other ones). The new information in this article was Ginny for me (though in another article JKR said Ron was an auror with Harry or something).

Fred dying was really sad, I really liked the twins together - George loses an ear and they sat around making jokes about it right away like it was no big deal. I guess the Weasley's had to lose someone, their family was too large and too involved to not suffer some way.

Lupin and Tonks was sad too since their son became an orphan the same way Harry did. One thing I didn't get at the end, when Harry's son saw Teddy making out with Victoire? on the train at the end and they said maybe now he could really be in the family, who is the girl? I just imagined maybe she was Bill and Fleur's daughter.

I know Dumbledore is one of the greatest wizards in history and all but I felt really bad for that kid being named Albus.
