Tournament for Dockside
Please use this thread to ask any questions you may have.
OOC rules for the King of the Ring portion of the tournament will be posted at a later date.
Callers, you do not need to report your shifts any differently.
On the night of the tournament, should someone who agreed to participate does not show, a subsitute will not be used and the tournament will proceed with one less entrant. The grace period will be 15 minutes.
The Senior Baron and Overlord picks will be given to the people holding those titles on the April 13th standings.
Good luck to everyone in getting one of those spots!

Oh, you know, now that I stop and think about it I do have a question. Or two.
What will occur in the event that a character qualifies for an invitation in more than one category? For example the number one Warlord in the rankings just happens to be the duelist with the most wins and/or the most duels over the four week period.
Secondly, will there be a running tally kept and made available to the public over the four week time span for the most duels/most wins categories?

The invitations start at the top of the list I posted so that Warlord will receive an invitation for being one of the top four on the WLRs and then that Warlord's name will be removed from the most duels list.Harris wrote:Oh, you know, now that I stop and think about it I do have a question. I haven't decided yet how it will be done, but there will be some type of update posted weekly.Harris wrote: Secondly, will there be a running tally kept and made available to the public over the four week time span for the most duels/most wins categories?

Why is that?DUEL Sylus wrote:Since I know for a fact that the chance Sy will get an invitation is slim and none, more none than slim. Will an extra caller to help out be appreciated?
There's nothing that makes it illegal for you to get the most wins in the next four weeks, or the most duels. Give it a try.
On a more general note, I'd like to approach the community with an idea I brought to Nick(Kheld) for the next MegaBrawl...but obviously, it would apply just as well here. I think it would be a good idea to install a rule where you cannot target the same participant in two consecutive rounds(obviously, this wouldn't apply to the final two contestants

According to the logic of the game, the winner of the vacant Barony should be the person tough and wily enough to survive, not the person with the most friends(or, more often than not, the player with the most friends). Hell, in the Ganderfald Affair, Lupton and Elle chose to co-win the event after being a team the whole time. I think that should aptly demonstrate why this rule is a good idea.
(Heh, and in case anyone might think I got ulterior motives, I've actually benefitted from this tendency more often than not in MBs.)
Also, just a heads up, but I think the name "King of the Ring" might be copyrighted.

Partially correct. However, copyright laws will allow for similar names to be used in different venue. For example, while WWE may own a copyright for "King of the Ring" A jeweler, for example, would be well within their rights to use the similar phrase. "Here and J. Gordon Jewelers, we are 'King of the Ring' "Cassius Gaius Maximius wrote:Also, just a heads up, but I think the name "King of the Ring" might be copyrighted.
Due to WWE being a live action, actual physical competition, I think that we'd be unlikely to get in any real copyright trouble from it due to us being text based gaming. I think at most we could be compared to a WWE Playstation style game titled that or something.
Of course, if all Warlords entered in the KotR tourney using WWE names, then we'd get in a load of trouble.

FYI, it's trademark not copyright. A copyright cannot be held on a word or phrase. A copyright applies to a body of work, like a story or script. Names, e.g., Darth Vader, cannot be copyrighted. They can be trademarked.G wrote:Partially correct. However, copyright laws will allow for similar names to be used in different venue. ...
That's all I have time for at the moment, but given our small size, lack of profit incentive, and if we used it only for a single event using the expression "King of the Ring" is unlikely to cause anyone to stress.

Well, three things.Face Loran wrote:Back to the heart of Cas's post. I think its a good idea to implement that in the rules, unless we want to support the strategy of making alliances before the duel. If thats something that people like in this type of event then by all means it will go on.
1. One problem with promoting the strategy of making alliances before and after the tournament is that these alliances tend to have to be OOC by nature, almost. After all, if you want it to be effective(unless you've got *everyone* on one person, like what happened to Lorance in the Ganderfald Affair at one point), you can't really coordinate efforts IC in the ring. It's gonna have to be IMs.
Before anybody points it out, yes it's technically feasible to send an IM IC in the form of a whisper or such, I know.
I also know, speaking from experience, that these alliances are pretty much never actually coordinated that way.
2. Another problem with the alliance thing in general is that newer blood in the King of the Ring is going to get blindsided. Not having been around as long = Not having the connections to form alliances of your own as easily. In every MegaBrawl, there's been some transient Glass or so who enters because it looks like fun, and they are the first targets of being ganged up on every time.
The invitation structure of this event will make it hard enough for lower-ranked people to get in as it is(Which I don't really disagree with: It's a Baronial tournament, after all). But it is possible for them to do so...just harder. And honestly, to me that just makes the idea of new people being targets for gang efforts that much more unfair.
In general, I think the invitation structure of this event makes the argument for this rule stronger than it would be with a MegaBrawl. How would you like to work hard for an invitation, get one, then be ganged up on and have your chances shot before you have a chance to get going? This applies to anybody, not just newer people.
3. With all of the above said, I don't feel this rule would kill off the strategy of alliances: Really, the idea is more targetted to preventing gang-ups than that. Going after one guy at once is only half of that strategy: The other half is not going after each other, and given the number of participants in this thing, it shouldn't be hard to avoid attacking one or two people for two consecutive rounds.
