The name of the business was carved from bronze and the bold letters were set against a smooth slate gray wall. A soft glow of Aegean blue lamps back lit the lettering and naturally drew the eye inward towards the interior of the lobby. The soft trickle of water could be heard as it seeped and dripped like rain down the uneven stack of stones to collect in an impluvium styled pool set amidst a marble and mosaic floor where brightly colored live fish meandered about. The art and décor had an undeniable and purposeful parthenonic feel…right down to the replica of The Three Goddesses to one side of the large Snakewood reception desk and the Goddess Nike to the right.
The Three Goddesses, what was left of them, reclined in peaceful repose to watch the birth of Athena from Zeus’s brow. The stone had been carved with such skill that the turning of the bodies made them seem anything but static while the remarkable production of draping fabric actually appeared wet and clung to the alluring figures as it united one to the other. There was neither anger nor pathos in their posture…no action at all…just a profound and deeply poetic sense of being. The headless Nike which flanked the opposite side of the desk was captured midmotion as she bent to remove a sandal which signified, in ancient tradition, that she was about to step on holy ground. Her wings, one open and the other closed, had been thoughtfully employed to assist in keeping her balance with purity of elegance while the deeply cut folds of her garment mirrored those of the nearly sheer gowns opposite her.
