2020 Holiday House Party

Post by BardGallant »

Introduction

This annual tradition started as a small gathering of friends, and those people of favorable acquaintance who otherwise had no family to spend the holidays with. Over the years it has grown to include a large number of individuals who have found a special place in many varying hearts. The originator, for reasons unspecified, has decided to cease hosting in this seventh year and is passing on the torch. This event takes place on December 25, 2020, actually on Christmas day like every year before. Being well aware that nobody is likely to actually be online and role-playing that day, we have opted to make this a board only event in which participation is encouraged but not required.

The Setting

Sheridan Driscol and his committed life partner Rhys Germain are welcoming the same guest list from years past, plus some, to their house in the Dragon’s Gate district. Being the social butterfly that he is, the bard has pretty much invited the entire city to come on out any time from sun up until sun down on Christmas day. Rumors get round by word of mouth. If a personal invitation was not extended, rest assured you’ll be warmly welcomed anyway.

For an in depth look, please see the Places of Interest complete description of The Old Pub, an abandoned bar that has been fully restored and renovated into a comfortable and cozy two story home. Of course, Dris and Rhys have decorated for the holidays! The outside of their house is decorated in festive, colorful lights. The interior is awash with sprigs of holly, scented candles, and filled with music that plays softly from strategically placed speakers in every room.

A live cut and elegantly decorated pine tree can be found in the midway between the front living parlor and back dining room. An assortment of wrapped, unmarked gifts is tucked under the tree. Guests are invited to take one if they wish. Each present is unique and could contain anything from a new festive mug, to warm socks, a literary classic, book of poetry, or even a collection of music in any various format. You decide!

Each room has an arrangement of comfortable places to sit, and plenty of standing space in the as well. A grazing board has been placed on the center of the dining room table, where guests are encouraged to place their brought dishes as well. The kitchen peninsula is decorated in a wide variety of glassware and beverages, both alcoholic and not. Help yourself and get to mingling!

As an added bonus, every room has strategically placed games for guests to engage in together. Chess and checkers, a dreidel with a basket of chocolate coins inspired by a friend, classic decks of cards, mind bender puzzles, and more! One can even find a variety of modern video games set out and ready to play on a big screen television in the upstairs den over the garage. No room is off limits, but certain wards are in place to keep thieves from making off with any valuables.

If guests find themselves overwhelmed by the crowd, they are invited to slip out the back door and into the bigger than it looks expansive back yard and gardens. There are several “blanket stations” near the fire pits, in case guests get cold. Plus, a s'mores and hot chocolate bar! Here one is likely to encounter the murder of crows, Gussie when she isn’t under your nose, a pair of gossipy talking peafowl, a mechanical owl, and a friendly foxmoth among other critters. Explore to your heart’s content, and don’t worry about getting lost. Somehow wandering feet will always find their way back home.

The Rules Both In and Out
  • 1. The change up this year from those past is that everyone is invited because Dris is a crazy social butterfly who adores all of Rhydin. If your character was a participant in years past, their invitation still stands and they are welcome to attend again this year. With the venue having changed, feel free to assume word of mouth gets around to find out the new arrangements for 2020.

    2. Please only participate if your character is attending with good will. Damage to the property or harm to any characters attending will not be tolerated. The Old Pub is heavily warded and under even divine protection. Not to mention expertly guarded by a fiercely loyal and loving immortal Irish wolfhound.

    3. Guests have historically been asked to prepare or purchase a single dish that reminds them of home to bring along and share with the other guests in a grand potluck. Should your character decide to follow tradition and bring a dish to add to the table, it is suggested you post pictures and include a recipe in any potential descriptions.

    4. Additional story bits such as collaborated writings, edited live play logs, or personal character reflections of the event are encouraged to be posted to this thread.

    5. Images and hyperlinks to videos or other relative imagery that you think might additionally reflect interactions at this event are also encouraged to be posted to this thread.

    6. Did your character bring any gifts for anyone? Feel free to post about that here too! Bear in mind that gift giving or exchanging while not frowned upon is never expected nor required.

    7. If you do not post something to this thread, we will assume your character was not present for this event. A placeholder post stating something as simple as “my character was there” is acceptable, though we fully encourage at least a teensy bit more like any other board event.

    8. There is no deadline to post, though it is suggested you post something before the end of the year. Characters are likely to talk about who was and was not present for this event in follow-up live play and collaborative writing sessions. If you don't get to it until after the New Year, though, we completely understand. This season gets busy for everybody!
Please note that these rules and other storyline information are subject to change at any time. Thank you for your participation! Happy holidays!

Though the party was, by tradition, meant to be a potluck of sorts, Rhys enlisted a close friend to help him design a menu for the day. He wanted to be sure everyone could find something to enjoy, whether or not they brought a dish.

Breakfast Menu
fluffy scrambled eggs, with or without cheese
sausage links and bacon (vegetarian substitutes available)
herbed breakfast potatoes
thick-cut toast with a variety of compound butters and jams
fresh fruit salad with honey-lime dressing
french toast bake studded with berries and cream
“design your own” waffles station with chopped fruit, nuts, chocolate chips, and more

Morning Drinks
orange juice
holiday punch
fresh coffee
hot tea
milk

Dinner hit the table in the early afternoon and would be available until sundown.

Dinner Menu
roasted beef tenderloin with French onion au jus
roasted vegetable croissant wreath with herbed goat cheese
rosemary-butter roasted potatoes
green beans almondine
maple-roasted carrots with cranberries
citrus salad with avocado and fennel

Sweet Treats
individual black forest brownie trifles
iced chocolate sugar cookies
gingerbread cookies (including mini houses for topping your cup)
cranberry mimosa cupcakes

Cocktails & More
hot buttered apple cider (with or without rum)
mulled cherry wine (alcoholic)
spiced hot chocolate (with or without scotch)
holiday punch (non-alcoholic)
hot tea and coffee (with or without the “Irish”)
anything else you can imagine from a well-stocked wet bar!

In addition to the menus above, Rhys and Dris assembled several snack boards and set them strategically throughout the house so their guests could graze while playing games. These boards and platters featured a variety of cheeses, charcuterie (including some vegetarian “meat” options, which are labeled), fresh and pickled vegetables, olives, nuts, crackers and crispbreads, a variety of dips and spreads, and fresh and dried fruit. There was also plenty of candy available. These were the holidays, after all!

Dris absolutely thrives on social interaction and is happy to welcome anyone and everyone into the home he has built with Rhys on this day. In a sense, this is their belated housewarming party, too. The tree in the midway between parlor and dining room is stacked with a seemingly infinite number of presents. He’ll insist that every visitor take one at random. They may in fact be enchanted to contain something the person is actually destined to like!

Man of Music

Having a baby grand piano in their front parlor living room means that guests are extremely likely to be subjected to impromptu concerts throughout the day. The office upstairs is open and guests are welcome to gather a guitar or tambourine, bodhrán or tin whistle, or just about any other musical instrument of reasonable size one can imagine. Don’t forget that a voice can be an instrument, too! Dris is certain to start up several rounds of Christmas carols at any point during the day. Sing along or listen at your leisure.

Walking Game

In an effort to encourage people to play more games, little baskets containing red and green velcro covered ping pong balls were placed in every room of the house. For a good portion of the day, Dris was wearing an ugly sweater with a bullseye printed on the front right over his belly. The black background sported holly berries and snowflakes, and the message reading You Miss, You Drink! Rest assured that he mocked any misses and pointedly declared a person now had to drink, regardless of the alcohol content of their beverage of choice.

Stories to Share!

Throughout the day, guests are likely to be regaled with legendary accounts of just about anything Dris can think to talk about, should they ask or not. Such wild tales may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • How his loyal Irish wolfhound Gussie’s full name is Augusta Mary Anne Holmès Driscol, and that she might actually be immortal, as well as a superhero in disguise.
  • How Pelia, the mechanical owl golem gifted to them by Mart Di’luna, is named after the comedic ballet Coppélia by Arthur Saint-Léon and Léo Delibes, and is trained to do several tricks. Look! He'll show you!
  • No less than seven different tales about how he and Rhys met, leaving it up to the listeners to gossip amongst themselves and decide which of them is true, if any.
  • How this particular room of their house is haunted and why. The story changes depending on which room of the house they are standing in at the time of his tale.
  • How, over a decade ago, he bested both Kitty Helston and Duel of Fists legend Matt Simon in the original Governor’s Cage Match, and also narrowly beat him in the elections to put a stop to Matt’s potential third year term.
These are only a few of the sorts of stories Dris may tell, and life events he'll boast about. You are welcome to make any other bizarre story he might make up on the fly. Only your imagination is the limit. Feel free to share!

Do Not Disturb

Despite the fact that Dris is an absolute extrovert, running a party from sun up until sun down is exhausting business! At some points during the day he is likely to be found passed out cold in a corner, on a sofa or settee, in a chair in the garden, or sprawled across his own bed upstairs. Naps are important for bards! And are especially likely given the excess quantity of alcoholic drinks he is known to imbibe.

Not to worry, though. These cat naps are short lived affairs. He’ll be up and gossiping again in no time! And he’ll always pop up to greet anyone arriving as well as giving a grateful hug to anyone seeing themselves out.

Anya arrived early. She brought a case of wine from her home, half apple and half spiced. This was dropped off by the door with the strict instruction to not give all of it away.

Her next offering was intended to be enjoyed on the day. It was an iced Matrimonial Cake that she'd prepared the night before and cut in to small squares.

Recipe:
2 cups flour
3/4 cup butter
Pinch salt
2 tsp confectioner's sugar
Combine these ingredients to make a pastry and pack in to a well greased jelly pan. Bake at 300 for 15 min.

3 eggs, well beaten
2 1/4 cups light brown sugar
2 cups chopped nuts
1/4 cup coconut
1.5 tsp vanilla
3 tsp flour
1.5 tsp baking powder
Pour this mixture on top of the cooked pastry. Return to oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool thoroughly.
Top with a thin icing of confectioner sugar and water.

((OOC - this is my family's matrimony cake recipe. It appears at all wedding and baby showers and every Christmas. This is the wording from my very Scottish great great grandmother's recipe box. I kept it all the same because if I tried to translate I'd probably do it wrong. You'll have to trust my ancestors to guide you if you make it. A hint - we usually use chopped walnuts. If I do get time to make it I'll post a picture in this thread. I've never seen anyone else do it quite like this.
Edit: I remembered something else. Let the pastry cool overnight before you ice in the morning. It is excessively runny otherwise.))

One of Bailey's proxies -- the statue with the mottled pink-and-white marble -- made a quick appearance at the house party, more to drop off Bailey's gift and food item on his behalf than to mix and mingle. Besides, the golem wasn't much of a conversationalist.

Oddly enough, the food and the gift for Rhys and Dris were one and the same. They stuck a jar of raspberry preserves (and only that!) somewhere on the table with the rest of the potluck items -- Pinkie would leave it up to the partygoers to figure out the best way to serve them. Toast? Crepes? Some sort of exceedingly strange body shot? The proxy wouldn't really know, since they didn't actually need to eat or drink.

Before they left, they did their best to track down Rhys (or, failing that, left it under the holiday tree) and deliver a second jar of the preserves, for he and Dris' personal pantry. There was a brief note from Bailey that went with it, written on sparkly, glittery stationery from the Archmage's Tower.

Dear Rhys,

I apologize for not delivering you the raspberries I promised you earlier in the summer. Because of my delay, Zevarrna and I decided to make some preserves with what we managed to harvest. I hope this will still serve as an equivalent exchange for the cherry tomatoes.

I hope that you and Dris have a merry and happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Bailey

P.S. The cherry tomatoes were very good. If you like the preserves, perhaps we can set up a regular exchange?

Bart and his lady rolled up in the topless Highwayman despite the winter chill in the air. Armed with two boxes of peppermint and two boxes of brownies, the duo delivered the special{/i] treats from Hot Betty's Wake and Bakery to Rhys and Dris, thanked the hosts, and then went about admiring their digs and greeting other party goers. (If they handed out joints here and there to willing persons, well, 'tis the season for giving.)

They would eventually split up, with Bart shuffling off to play the walking game and getting hammered drunk while Coydog gushed over Gussie and gave the great dog a pet whenever the opportunity arose. Though after overhearing Dris' name and story for the wolfhound, she would forever after refer to her as Lady Holmès.

Good company, good food, great way to round out the holidays!

Lucy and August had family in town, but they wanted to stop by and say ‘hi’ before the whole day got away from them. August had brought a good bottle of wine with him for the hosts and Lucy had a tin full of cookies. “I baked them myself!” She was proud of her baking (even if some of them were a little extra crispy).

Simple Christmas cookie recipe here!

Lucy didn’t eat anything herself except for a little grazing here and there, but she gratefully accepted a cup of hot coffee, confessing that getting ready for Christmas was just so much work she was exhausted! She enjoyed visiting with whomever would chat with her -- especially if the subject was a little bit gossipy -- but she absolutely thrilled when she got to meet Gussie. Abandoning her cup of coffee, she immediately took the dog out back to play chase in the garden. If anyone asked, she’d admit she once had a friend with a similarly large dog that she missed terribly.

Their visit was unfortunately brief, but Lucy and August made sure to thank their new friends, Dris and Rhys, for the invitation, and promised to see them in town again soon.

Mist arrived sometime after noon, likely with Amaris in tow. He was cheerful in a horrible blue suit, already comfortably rumpled, the tie loose around his neck.

Image

He set up a beautiful electric samovar. He filled the tank with water and set tea to brewing in the pot on top...

Image

Then he filled the creamer and sugar dish, and added plates of spice cookies, gingerbread, and biscotti...

Image

and a dozen or so little jars of jellies, sweet, and some hot and sweet!

Image

To make the tea, pour about half a cup, more or less, of the thick, rich tea from the pot, and make up the rest with hot water from the tank. Then add sugar, or honey, or cream, or lemon or spoons of the jelly to the tea, and enjoy!

How the elf had learned about Russian tea was anyone's guess, but he was happy to share the story if asked!

He left the samovar as gift to Dris and Rhys, along with the instructions.

Having decided to choose comfort over fashion, Salvador showed up late that morning looking as though he had just rolled out of bed. His hair was a rumpled mess throughout the day, constantly combed through by raking fingers, often not his own. He was also in desperate need of a shave. The Spaniard was dressed in a pair of black and gray plaid pajama pants with a baggy gray sweatshirt over top. Instead of his usual boots, he was wearing a pair of cushioned slip-on house shoes and wore them whether he was indoors or out during the entirety of his visit. The whole of his left hand and forearm, from fingertips to elbow, was bound up in medical dressing, and he kept it close to his body, refraining from using it as often as possible.

Salvador arrived in the company of his commonly familiar shadow, and actually endured a hug from their host so that he could whisper something in his ear. When he and Dris withdrew from their surprisingly lengthy embrace, the bard’s brows were high and his mouth curved into an ‘O’ of surprise, but when he looked upon the young man known as gatito he smiled before pulling him into a fierce welcoming hug as well. Soon enough they released to their own devices, and made themselves at home.

The Spaniard and his companion had brought with them bags full of groceries. One parcel contained a box of apple cider madeleines, baked fresh just that morning. They added them to the breakfast table for guests to add to their morning meal, or to snack on throughout the day. As an added bonus, Salvador spent some time in the kitchen melting a fresh batch of authentic Spanish hot chocolate to dip them in, or for anyone with a sweet tooth to simply sip.

Later in the afternoon, Salvador returned to the kitchen. Unpacking one of the bags they’d brought with them, he whipped up a fresh batch of his traditional “reminds me of home” favorite, a Catalonian escalivada. Lacking a grill for the vegetables, he improvised with a one pan recipe using the oven. Adding this to the afternoon and evening buffet, along with a loaf of fresh crusty bread, brought some summer flavor to the table. In the evening, he heated a kettle of water to brew a decanter of coffee.

When not in the kitchen being a culinary nuisance, Salvador otherwise made himself scarce. There were few rooms he found any comfort lounging in within the house, and so he spent most of his time tucked away at one of the firepits in the outside garden with a blanket draped over his lap. He kept his distance from all the animals and magical creatures, and they gave him his space too. Though he did not go actively seeking the company of any people visiting, he did not turn anyone away should they have stumbled upon him either.

Salvador and his companion stayed for the entirety of the day and evening, and stuck around after sun down to help Dris and Rhys clean up. Once everything was neatly in order, they bid their hosts a good evening and made their way back to Matadero, giving them their peace and privacy again.

Before he left Mist had helped Amaris decorate a small basket, they added holly all over the basket. Once the basket was decorated Amaris put some items she bought for Dris and Rhys.
Image

Inside the basket, there were two tea tube infusers, a container of bourbon black tea, a small tin of sugar lace doilies that could be placed on the top of their tea, and four fishermen tea bag holders for when they steeped their tea.

Image

a small note inside said

Happy Holidays, hope you enjoy!

Amaris had decided that her dad needed some adult time so she stayed home to work on some painting but was happy to have been invited.

Conner & Val stopped by The Old Pub briefly to wish their friends a happy Christmas. Conner brought a bottle of Schladerer Kirschwasser Black Forest Cherry Liqueur for Dris. For Rhys, Conner had a book with him -- Sourcing Parts Through the Nexus: from Steam Engines to Naquida Converters, a Brief History of Rhydin as Told by its Mechanics by Maggie Liebherr.

Conner never pretended to be a particularly good cook, and Val was the sort who seemed to spend a lot of time in the kitchen before emerging with a simple sandwich. Not wanting to come empty-handed though, Conner and Val brought a small jar of homemade herbed farmer’s cheese and a repurposed cookie tin of rustic crackers that they explained were courtesy of Conner’s mum. With apologies, they had no recipes to accompany them.

When he spotted them, Conner chuckled at the sight of the dreidels, and he made sure to show Val (and anyone else interested) how to spin a dreidel upside down.

Their visit was regretfully brief -- Conner and Val had many stops to make that day -- and Conner said he still planned to be behind the bar that night, putting the light on for any who might need a friendly place to land.

Young Master Desdenova arrived, bright eyed and bushy tailed, with his elder sister Jackie there to hold his proverbial leash. The pair was simply adorable in Edwardian Christmas finery, she in white-trimmed red velvet, and he in dark green. Desdenova was happy to hug Dris, and dragged in the beautiful dulcimer that Dris had crafted for the boy's birthday. Jackie trailed after, carrying her own guitar, and of course, they went right to the piano.

Desdenova played several tunes on the dulcimer, but as his voice was changing, not a chance he'd sing. But that was what Jackie was for. Soon after the teen had stashed a canvas military like bag aside for Salvador, she returned to pick up her guitar and joined in playing, singing old folk tunes and carols and shanties in her spritely soprano voice.

Sometime before dark, they vacuumed down a lot of goodies and chocolate drinks before going forth and finding more yule to spread.

Desdenova left behind a little potted Christmas cactus in bloom, and Jackie, a little birdhouse ready for spring.

Eden was happy to come celebrate Christmas with Dris and Rhys and all their friends! With her family far away, Nat busy volunteering, and everything shutdown for the holiday, Eden was free to spend most of the day with them just hanging out.

She was casually dressed in a sweater and jeans under her coat. And she was wearing the purple boots that Olaf had just given her!

She didn’t bring any presents with her (ugh, more presents!?!?), but she did bring food to share that reminded her of home. A vegan peanut stew with rice on the side. She explained that she used peanut only cause Rhydin doesn’t have the kind of nuts she knew from home, but that she thought the flavors were pretty similar. And sometimes she likes to add meat to it to make it more hardy, but she knows sometimes people here don’t eat meat so she made it without. And back home the rice isn’t white like this, but this works pretty good anyhow! She left the recipe for the dish tucked under the giant pot she brought.

Eden arrived just in time to catch the end of breakfast (delicious!) and since she didn’t have anywhere to be, she spent the day snacking and relaxing, talking to anyone who wanted to chat, basically just in no hurry to leave, enjoying the good food, good cheer, and good company.

Koyan and Aiden made a point to stop by the party and arrived with gifts and food. Koyan had chosen to bring a traditional Turkish dessert, served with a printed placard that read: Tulumba, compliments of the Ottoman Empire. They were fried dough with syrup, similar to Churros.

For the hosts, Aiden had procured a matching set of Pythagoras cups. Known to the Hellens as 'I koúpa tis dikaiosýnis', or 'The Cup of Justice', the vessels were designed with moderation...or maybe deprivation!....in mind. If the cups are overfilled, the entire contents of the cup will drain away through a hole in the bottom.
Image
Image

The Greek also arrived with a sack full of oranges, a sealed jar of thyme-infused honey and some cinnamon. He straightaway found the kitchen so he could peel and slice the fruit and lay it out under a layer of the honey sprinkled with cinnamon. He called the dessert Portokalia me Meli, amusement dancing in his blue eyes. He left the jar with the excess honey open in case anyone wanted to drizzle it on other items.
Image
Image

Given the sudden, sharp change of weather in RhyDin, the Greek had donned a black leather jacket to help ward off the cold. He wore a grey button down shirt beneath it, left untucked over black jeans. He spent the bulk of his time with Koyan and had a ready, wild grin for anyone they interacted with during their time wandering inside and outside the house. He absolutely refused....usually with a laugh!....to sing any Christmas songs or even say the word Christmas, citing an allergy to the particular deity associated with the holiday. He was full of his usual nicknames for any and all he encountered.
Image

Like Aiden, Koyan chose something to combat the cold, but not something too fancy: a gray wool coat, jeans, and a nice shirt of navy blue. He made sure to compliment the duo on both the party and the house, which they had turned into a welcoming home. Besides engaging in conversation and jovial banter, he also partook of the food and drink. They left before nightfall with well wishes and congratulations trailing in their wake.
