The attack erupted in spurts all over the city, spreading street to street, district to district. Not every street or neighborhood was affected; there appeared to be no rhyme or reason to the locations and destinations other than to kill as many civilians as possible. It lasted for hours, a full out assault on Rhydin's population. Groups of men and women popped up during the melee to help fight the beasts back, their clothing plain, their faces set in determined lines. They spoke to no one and did not respond if spoken to.
By three in the morning, the only beasts left on the streets were dead ones. No more rose from the stinking fissures, which, eventually, sealed themselves back up. Smoke hovered over the affected areas of the city from fires set during the mayhem.
As sunrise touched the horizon, it became clear that the demon horde had lost the greater battle.
Or had they? Perhaps this was just a test run for a large scale event yet to come.

(As the post states, not every residential area/business district will be attacked. I'm leaving it open so players can or cannot have their characters involved. Feel free to have your characters fight the beasts or be affected in smaller ways. There will be a live event in the #streets-of-rhydin channel starting at 8 central time. The creatures are typical demons and devils, coming up from hell. None of the fissures open throughout the city until well after dark. Happy writing!)
