What is it that makes a man a man? Is it his origins, the way things start? Or is it something else, something harder to describe?

For him, it began as a child. His dad was a police officer, his mother stayed at home with Kyle and his younger brother Darius. They weren't rich, and it wasn't a perfect life, but by the standards of a life and city where the odds weigh in heavily in misfortune's favor, their family was ahead.

Even when Dad was killed in the line of duty, the victim of a stray bullet during a police raid, it wasn't bad. Kyle was fourteen, well on his way to becoming a good man, and he made it his job to look after his brother and mother.

Unfortunately, Kyle wasn't his father, did not possess the man's authority or powerful presence that would come in time...far too late.

It was the death of his brother that pushed him into action, that became his driving force. Mother became his motivation, his life, his reason - for her nothing was unattainable.

He threw himself into school, pushing himself, and found out something about himself he didn't even know - he was smart.

Up until that point he had been happy to merely exist, to live an ordinary life. Now, with a reason, something to aim for, he found potential hitherto untapped within himself.

From a mediocre student he suddenly rose to the top of his class, a meteoric rise seen and approved by his teachers, who regarded the boy's turnaround as nothing short of inspiring. Endlessly they would extol this young man's story to other students, an example of one person's accomplishments in the face of adversity.

He didn't notice, only continued to work. If anything, harder. From high school, everyone wanted him - aside from his academic record, seventeen-year-old Kyle Pontius stood just shy of 6'10" and weighted in at close to 280 lbs. and had a natural gift for athletic ability that would've had Lombardi almost creaming his pants.

All of those colleges were to be disappointed when he chose MIT.

Six years and three degrees (in medical engineering and physics, chemical engineering and electrical engineering) later, he opted to use his knowledge in the service of his country as an officer in the Marine Corps for another four years. When he got out, he found he had a job offer waiting for him.

It was the craziest proposal he'd ever heard in his life, but when he'd heard the young man who introduced himself as Ed Batten out completely, he realized that for all its insanity, it was also genius.
