It was her destiny, or so she'd tell you, this job that she did. This job that curled smoke through the passage of her lungs, that stung her green eyes half blind, that left her bone weary with ash suffocating the pores of her skin. It was her destiny, this five-foot-seven redhead insisted, to run back into burning buildings, to try and breathe life back into a still baby's body, and to wrap the mourning masses in the fold of willow-thin but strong arms when all else failed. This slip of a girl with the heart of a lion; this renaissance flower with a cosmopolitan smile; she was built for triumph and tragedy but wrapped it all up in euphoria and sweetness. The marrow of her was golden, down where the eyes couldn't see, but the essence of her told a story as bright as the sun. What you couldn't see, you felt. What you couldn't feel, you breathed.
