Soft smiles and softer curves traced a whimsical path of feminine beauty often seen as attainable and easy going. She could have been the girl next door. Quiet enough to fly under the radar and delicate enough to be a flower on anyone's wall, she mixed bohemian finery with the subtle plumage of a pale skinned peacock.

No matter how hard she tried, no matter how many times she'd practiced her charlatan's smile, she could not get it to reach calculating, shrewd eyes. Seemingly endless classes in etiquette had given her a pleasing posture but not rid her of twitching, dexterous fingers.
