What lingered behind that charming smile and playful demeanor?

To the unknowing masses, 'Shepard' was all harmless wit and whimsy, an everyday charlatan with rugged good looks, a swimmer's athletic build, and the mischievous slink of a coyote. He occasionally milled amongst the more socially acceptable masses, drinking their booze and listening (or watching) as much as he engaged. What wasn't likable about that?

There were a precious small lot who knew him better, the wraiths and waifs and nobodies of Rookery Row called him by other names. Fewer still saw the true flip side of the coin, deceptively strong and with a mean streak a mile wide. The thing of tattered rags and freakish moments.

Better for everyone if he stayed in the Row.
