Applicants for the positions in the Repertory Company will be interviewed individually. They will be asked to perform a prepared audition piece of their own choosing, and sight-read and perform a monologue chosen by the in-house director.
Applicants for positions in the Ballet Company will be invited back to audition with the ballet directors. There will be set pieces, as well as a solo and group audition.
((OOC Note - The Shanachie Theater Companies and House Band are intended to be a platform for players to expand their horizons among the community. Applications can be considered to be successful if made. Regular play, in forums and/or live, would be very much appreciated where time permits. Players' names will be attached to the pertinent productions in varying roles, unless they specifically state otherwise. Please note, if you are currently on the Roll Call of the Shanachie's Companies, you will need to add your details to this thread, or contact me directly via PM, to keep that place in the Shanachie line up. In light of the last couple of years experience at this, we are also adding that should your character join the Shanachie and then do absolutely nothing - play in the rooms, post on the boards, etc - for an extended period of time, we will remove your character from the Roll Call.))

Contrary to past years' auditions, he elected a more serious route this year. Dressed in a brown corduroy jacket, black slacks, and brown loafers, his hair askew and artfully greasy (if such a thing is possible), he started by addressing the Company foremost to give a brief intro that was less an introduction and more an expression of gratitude for all that the Theater had given him the past half decade. From there, he performed
Peter Trofimov's monologue from ‘The Cherry Orchard’. His audition was rounded out with a gritty rendition of
Confrontation from Jekyll & Hyde, in addition to any requests made by the in-house director.

Tori arrived dressed in a simple ankle-length black dress with her long, black hair pulled back. She set up and tuned her instrument, carefully checking the open-holed keys for sticking and movement (as she always did) and the instrument for dings, dents, or other imperfections which might affect the purity of sound for her audition. Before she was called to play her piece, she made awkward chit-chat with the other musicians there. Sylista had asked her to
try to network and become acquainted with other people who had a passion for music.
The piece she chose for her audition was Bach's
Badinerie and
Polonaise and Double from
Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor. Tori was asked to play bars 9 to 32 of a transposed flute solo from Andrew Lloyd Webber's
Think of Me, a piece from
Phantom of the Opera. The young woman thanked those in attendance and waited (anxiously) to hear back on whether she was going to perform with The Shanachie Theatre.

by Eregor
Company Applied for (Theater/Repertory/Ballet/Band): Repertory (regular)
Name: Eregor Túr Gairdín
Address: Gardenhome, across the road from Maple Grove
Is there anything concerning your medical history or state of health that is relevant to your application? No.
How much notice do you need to give to your current employer, if currently employed? None. My time is flexible.
Previous training pertinent to this application (if any): Please see attached resume.
Previous experience pertinent to this application (if any): Please see attached resume.
Do you have any criminal convictions? None in RhyDin.
The attached resume included a number of terms and semesters at various colleges, universities, and journeyman programs across numerous cities, planets, and interstellar empires. It also listed credits from film, television, stage, and even a few radio drama roles, and concludes with Eregor's many past roles at the Shanachie itself.
For his audition monologue, he performed one of Faustus from Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe.
Faustus: Ah, Faustus,
Now has thou but one bare hour to live,
And then thou must be damn’d perpetually.
Stand still, you ever-moving spheres of heaven,
That time may cease and midnight never come;
Fair nature’s eye, rise, rise again, and make
Perpetual day; or let this hour be but
A year, a month, a week, a natural day,
That Faustus may repent and save his soul.
O lente lente currite noctis equi!
The stars move still, time runs, the clock will strike,
The devil will come, and Faustus must be damn’d.
O, I’ll leap up to my God! Who pulls me down?
See, see where Christ’s blood streams in the firmament!
One drop would save my soul, half a drop. Ah, my Christ! –
Rend not my heart for naming of my Christ;
Yet will I call on him. O, spare me, Lucifer! –
Let Faustus live in hell a thousand years,
A hundred thousand, and at last be sav’d.
O, no end is limited to damned souls.
Curs’d be the parents that engender’d me!
No, Faustus, curse thyself, curse Lucifer
That hath depriv’d thee of the joys of heaven.
O, it strikes, it strikes! Now, body, turn to air,
Or Lucifer will bear thee quick to hell!
O soul, be changed into little water drops,
And fall into the ocean, ne’er be found.
My God, my God! Look not so fierce on me!
Adders and serpents let me breathe awhile!
Ugly hell, gape not! Come not, Lucifer;
I’ll burn my books! – Ah, Mephostophilis!

Attached to the application was a resume listing all his performances over the last few years since arriving in Rhy'Din. For his chosen scene, he performed Berowne's monologue from Act 3, Scene 1 of Shakespeare's
Love's Labour's Lost:
And I, forsooth, in love! I, that have been love's whip;
A very beadle to a humorous sigh;
A critic, nay, a night-watch constable;
A domineering pedant o'er the boy;
Than whom no mortal so magnificent!
This whimpled, whining, purblind, wayward boy;
This senior-junior, giant-dwarf, Dan Cupid;
Regent of love-rhymes, lord of folded arms,
The anointed sovereign of sighs and groans,
Liege of all loiterers and malcontents,
Dread prince of plackets, king of codpieces,
Sole imperator and great general
Of trotting 'paritors:--O my little heart:--
And I to be a corporal of his field,
And wear his colours like a tumbler's hoop!
What, I! I love! I sue! I seek a wife!
A woman, that is like a German clock,
Still a-repairing, ever out of frame,
And never going aright, being a watch,
But being watch'd that it may still go right!
Nay, to be perjured, which is worst of all;
And, among three, to love the worst of all;
A wightly wanton with a velvet brow,
With two pitch-balls stuck in her face for eyes;
Ay, and by heaven, one that will do the deed
Though Argus were her eunuch and her guard:
And I to sigh for her! to watch for her!
To pray for her! Go to; it is a plague
That Cupid will impose for my neglect
Of his almighty dreadful little might.
Well, I will love, write, sigh, pray, sue and groan:
Some men must love my lady and some Joan.

Like last year, Carina and Aran had decided to once again perform a duet for this year's audition. As a married couple, it was easy finding time to practice together, and daughter Aluviel was more than happy to serve as an enthusiastic audience member. For this year's audition, they had chosen Christine and Raoul's duet from
Phantom of the Opera,
"All I Ask of You", adding to it a little bit of ballroom dancing they had learned over the last year at the De Luca Dance Studio.
((We chose the movie version of this song because we felt it better represented Carina and Aran's voices than the stage version.))

Song Choice for Audition: Lucy’s
A New Life from
Jekyll&Hyde (The Musical)
A new life, what I wouldn't give
To have a new life
One thing I have learned as I go through life:
Nothing is for free along the way.
A new start, that's the thing I need
To give me new heart,
Have a chance in life to find a new part,
Just a simple role that I can play.
A new hope,
Something to convince me
To renew hope,
A new day, bright enough to help me
Find my way.
A new chance, one that maybe has
A touch of romance.
Where can it be
A chance for me?
A new dream, I have one I know
That very few dream,
I would like to see that overdue dream
Even though it never may come true.
A new love, though I know
There's no such thing as true love;
Even so although I never knew love,
Still I feel that one dream is my due.
A new world, this one thing I want
To ask of you world
Once before it's time to say adieu, world
One sweet chance to prove the cynics wrong.
A new life more and more I'm sure
As I go through life,
Just to play the game
And to pursue life,
Just to share it's pleasures and belong.
That's what I've been here for all along.
Each day's a brand new life.

Rehearsing was really just a formality for Dorian, as he had belonged to the theater since settling in Rhy'Din after spending years on the road with a traveling theater troupe. It was no secret that he preferred comedy to drama, but had proven he was capable of both. For this year's audition, he had decided on a monologue from Shakespeare's
A Midsummer Night's Dream, bringing a somewhat over-the-top performance to that of the role of Puck that had the directors in stitches.
My mistress with a monster is in love.
Near to her close and consecrated bower,
While she was in her dull and sleeping hour,
A crew of patches, rude mechanicals,
That work for bread upon Athenian stalls,
Were met together to rehearse a play
Intended for great Theseus' nuptial-day.
The shallowest thick-skin of that barren sort,
Who Pyramus presented, in their sport
Forsook his scene and enter'd in a brake
When I did him at this advantage take,
An ass's nole I fixed on his head:
Anon his Thisbe must be answered,
And forth my mimic comes. When they him spy,
As wild geese that the creeping fowler eye,
Or russet-pated choughs, many in sort,
Rising and cawing at the gun's report,
Sever themselves and madly sweep the sky,
So, at his sight, away his fellows fly;
And, at our stamp, here o'er and o'er one falls;
He murder cries and help from Athens calls.
Their sense thus weak, lost with their fears
thus strong,
Made senseless things begin to do them wrong;
For briers and thorns at their apparel snatch;
Some sleeves, some hats, from yielders all
things catch.
I led them on in this distracted fear,
And left sweet Pyramus translated there:
When in that moment, so it came to pass,
Titania waked and straightway loved an ass.

Yes - due to a regrettable and recurring condition that has been passed down in my family for generations, I experience headaches, sensitivity to strong light, and nausea after particularly long nights. I may require earplugs, shaded eyewear, and naps on those occasions.
How much notice do you need to give to your current employer, if currently employed?
I will need three days to break off a few engagements, and three more to hide from the paramours in question.

After delivering his application, he stressed how happy he was to be returning to his friends here at The Shanachie, cursed the misery rapscallions in charge of The Shannon's Key, at length and in (wholly fictitious) detail, and drifted further into soliloquy about his woes as an unhappy victim of circumstance, and the unfairness of people noticing him creeping out of bedroom windows when they should be in bed themselves.
At one point, he broke into song.
He then took his leave. Perhaps that was his performance?
