Athlstan: Var Medici-Giovanni(4) vs. Gloria Blaze(13)

Post by Cassius Gaius Maximius »

Var Medici-Giovanni

Gender: Male

Race: Human. Like G'nort Dragoon Talanador, Var is one of a select few "top level" duelists who can claim to have achieved their resume without the aid of otherworldly powers or superhuman physical capabilities...or even formal training in a martial art.

Point of Origin: Var was born in Florence, Italy..but was raised in a valley not far outside Rhydin. While traces of an Italian accent remained through his career, Var's general "native culture" was Rhydinian.

Occupation: Formerly a sailor and a ship captain, an occupation which he maintained in the early part of his dueling career. This helps explain his early "knack" for Arena dueling: Sailors must have a strong constitution, are kept physically fit and capable of long, grueling tests of physical endurance by their daily duties..and if regularly involved in combat, are specifically conditioned to the travails of fighting with weapons in an enclosed space, with an emphasis on quick dodges and an ability to instantly switch from offensive mode to defensive mode to cover a secondary attack from another source...all hallmarks of Var's style. While he never dueled in a King of the Ring, one has to suspect that Var would do quite well indeed(and indeed, the winners of the last two officially sponsored King of the Ring tournaments were...G'nort Dragoon Talanador, a man with a very similar background as Var, and suspected buccaneer Teagan Rielea). Unlike G'nort however, Var gave up the sea lateronsettling down as a landowner with his beloved wife Noelle and his four children.

Preferred Weapon: A rapier named Fallen Crew. According to Var, the rapier was named in memory of a former crew of his that was mostly lost in a storm, perhaps providing an extra boost of determination when he stepped into the rings with that weapon. Although he occasionally used a scimitar, Var was generally loyal to Fallen Crew from beginning to end of his career...and as a result of his accomplishments, the rapier became a famed weapon.

TDL History: 35-24 over six seasons. Var is generally remembered for two things. One is obviously his association with the Tenth Ring..the other is the Phantom Scots. Var began his TDL career in Season 515 with the Jade Gryphons, leaving the team as a result of his fallout with JGR team captain Drakewyn Silvertree in the off-season. He signed with Seamus MacDonnaugh's Scots Pride, only for Seamus to leave the team and the League shortly thereafter: Var took the captainship of the renamed Phantom Scots and as captain, made them a force to be reckoned with from Season 516 until the team's disbandment after Season 520. Best season was 7-1 in Season 520; the single loss did not occur until the final regular week of the season. Var's TDL record generally mirrors his DoS improvement in the rings: An average record in his early seasons, slowly turning into excellent records in his final two seasons.

DoS Titles Held: 7 time former Baron of the 10th(2nd reign, 2 defenses; 7th reign, 2 defenses). Var was Baron of the Tenth for over a year in his third reign, nearly a year in his sixth reign, and over two years in his seventh and final reign. No one has ever established a stranglehold or a dominance over a single Barony as much as Var did over the Tenth: It took a renaming to Seaside, a year-long dominating reign by Karen Wilder, and a further two-year dominating reign by Damien Mortis to even begin to remove his shadow from the ring. Even today, the 10th/Seaside Ring is generally known as the ring of stability, and it has Var to thank for most of that.

Challenge Histories: Duke Leto of Covington(Baronial Challenge-10th), Agrenish Preescott--twice(Baronial Challenge-10th, Baronial Defense-10th), Drakewyn Silvertree(Baronial Challenge-10th), Mornlythe shera-Jorethan(Baronial Challenge-10th), Cassius Maximius(Baronial Challenge-10th, 2-0 B03; one fall a shutout), Arithon Falessen(Baronial Challenge-10th, 2-1 B03), Lupton est Dracoern(Baronial Defense-10th), Cletus Ganderfald(Baronial Defense-10th), Max Quinlan Blue(Baronial Defense-10th, 2-1 B03).

Notable Tournament Wins/Placings: Fall 2000 WLT 3rd place; won the vacant 10th Ring as a prize.

DoS Madness History: N/A.

vs.

Gloria Blaze

Gender: Female

Race: Human

Point of Origin: Unknown

Occupation: Librarian. However, Gloria trained very extensively in the Atreblan Dojos for several years, becoming highly polished in the forms and counters of armed dueling. Originally the wife of a little-known and low-ranked duelist named Braeger, Gloria concieved a desire to enter the duels after Braeger was killed in a non-sanctioned duel to the death with Lupton est Dracoern...the very same Lupton est Dracoern who may face her in the second round of the All-Time Madness. (In Lupton's defense, Braeger challenged him to the death duel, a major reason for Gloria eventually dropping the grudge). After moving on, she remained a committed and ambitious duelist in another forum..TDL.

Preferred Weapon: A shortsword.

TDL History: 28-14 over six seasons, all with Atrebla and at least the last two or three as Atrebla's captain: Gloria is generally credited as the person who turned Atrebla from the team that defined "mediocre" in TDL canon into the only team to ever win the TDL Championship more than once, and her influence lingered until the closure of TDL. Former TDL Champion, as Team Captain of Atrebla in Season 520..sadly, she cannot claim to be a two-time former TDL champion, having left Atrebla before their second victory the next season. Former TDL MVP, in Season 520. Best season was an undefeated 7-0, in Season 520.

Head to Head: Here we have a clash of two duelists who excelled to a superlative level in a certain aspect of the duels, but lacked in other areas. Var never won a challenge match not involving the Tenth. While it can be argued that it was his intense level of interest in the ring that caused this, the argument isn't foolproof: He faced Dalamar Ar'Daumon in three Right of Challenge duels, and lost all three times. Var was a man of principle, who would stand by his friends to death..but not to dishonor. His reputation has varied: Extraordinarily popular in the prime of his career, his dedication to the Tenth and it's honor began to be derided as obsession by the end. Absence makes the heart grow fonder--and allows time for reasoned analysis of emotional opinions--and recent years have seen the "stock" of Var's legend grow in leaps and bounds.

Gloria Blaze is the antithesis of the proverbial Arena superstar who could never perform to their traditional levels in TDL: A TDL wunderkind who could never achieve much in DoS. It's an interesting matchup, with one notable fact: Var has succeeded in TDL as well.
