Xanth stormed up to the public message board to peruse the latest standings. Standing
there with his arms folded across his chest and the red lights under the hood of his cloak
burning, he noted that he was -again- in second place for the Ring of Klytus.

"Arrrrgh . . . gaining this magical trinket is proving to be an irritating frustration",
said he.

He saw that Etherean Esperwind held first place with a commanding lead. Apparently his
loss of the Tower of Fire to Bran, who Anubis had dubbed "the salamander", had lit the
proverbial fire (pun intended) under him.

"Etherean is a skillful veteran who could prove a challenge for me", thought Xanth.

Still, Xanth was the one who inflicted that sole loss on Etherean, even though Xanth only
won by a point and had to come from behind to do it.

"Perhaps Etherean will be distracted by trying to regain the Tower of Fire from the
salamander", thought Xanth. Xanth would have to carefully observe this accomplished mage
in the weeks ahead.
