I thought I heard something negative said about making my own title.

Okay seriously, I've been doing this for... is it five years now? Haven't hit a rank above Ruby. I have however hit the ranks I am entitled to. I may not be the typical duelist, honestly I don't care so much about rank or gaining it. I've said it to enough people that they're likely nodding right now.

I am about something completely different. Sabine, you're awesome, don't let anyone tell you different... including you! I like to be where I am, low ranked, fighting whomever whenever. I love a loss to a new person as much as a win over one of the ranked emeralds and above. (I only use fists rank here because it is THE BEST SPORT!)

This thread was originally about a new system, and for me in those first months I could easily have been in the negatives more than twenty maybe even more than fifty points. That was when rank didn't reset weekly. There have been these questions before, and those with the authority are always considering things. I personally don't believe in instant gratification, however it might be fun for a cycle to make PC challenge-able. In my head, or maybe on paper I see that as a good training tool for those who do want to make the grind for emeralds and opals.

Hell, I might be able to be convinced to put up the title of Anvil for challenge. Unfortunately it comes with no benefits except a lot of pyrotechnics and a tendency to act mad as a hatter!

The Opal BioHazard listed in this profile is a self-made title. Dioxane even challenged Jesse for it, won, and then Jesse proceeded to challenge for it back and won it. Jake was the coolest when I got the okay and was allowed to make an icon for it too.

This idea is adorable!

We have a lot of people who are self titled. It'd be fun to try and steal titles and be the "Insert title of the Arena" or "Best at this of the Outback"

I'd totally go after Jewell for Empress status

Little things like this could add a really fun element.

There's plenty of things players can do. You're only limited by your imagination!

I still want to give this a test run, but after reading the downsides that Jake and Jewell and Colin pointed out, I'm less convinced.

I'm also in agreement that the need to attract new players needs to be balanced with the need to retain older players. Besides the more sanguine aspects of the importance of stable vets(coaching, calling, history, etc..), we need to be honest with ourselves: A huge influx of new people isn't going to happen no matter what.

Call me an on-the-fencer for right now.

Hi Aric, you don’t know me because I’m not often around and I’ve actually pushed this character to have left Rhydin but I’d like to make a case in the point of “making your own titles”. I took a page out of Spell’s book and Grace took over the Tower of Death, becoming the Keeper of Death. It was a place that Spell created on Twilight Isle and Grace went so far as to challenge Spell for it and make a key out of bone. All of this was purely RP. It never made any game difference, I never got an additional mod, I got story in a FFRP game and Spell was cool enough to let me run with their idea and even take it over.

I’ve encouraged others to create other made up Towers on the Isle – the Tower of Candy was a suggestion I nudged both Ahni and DemiBob in and they’ve both been lucky enough to combine that notion with the actual Tower of Earth. Again, more story in combination with the actual title.

Before I hear “Yeah that’s cool fam, but I don’t do DoM it’s intimidating, Magic makes my character itchy, etc. etc. etc” –There’s the Opal BioHazard in DoF. Spell and Dioxane Carcin (I believe, correct me if I’ve looked up the wrong character) have had challenges fighting over this Opal, also known as the Official Unofficial Opal.

I’m not super aware of what’s been created in DoS, but that doesn’t mean it is closed off.

Why not have challenges between squires? I haven’t followed what the Factions will do and become, but fights against opposing factions could be a thing. Rivalries can be born. Nemesises for all! I’m looking at you Whitemane.

If you’re looking to give out prizes that are out of your control, talk to the Sport Coordinators and see if there’s something they can pass out. Maybe a barony doesn’t have a squire (that’s an extra fancy right there), Maybe there’s emeralds that have a mentee spot open.

Eden has done a few theme nights so far for dueling in general, showing her great creativity skills! Nachos? Lazer Tag? What’s next in the books Eden? (but please don’t burn yourself out on it, I’ve been there before too)

Sabine has hosted a fabulous double challenge, further building up the opposing sides of the Fire and Ice Opals.

I’m unsure of how far back it was but Jewell (presuming with the permission of the DoS Coord) hosted a Fight like a Squire night back when she was a Baron.

Hope just had a Squire Tournament.

When I was calling for Tuesday Nights (this is well over a year ago) and we were seeing a major lull in activity, Grace gave out special Twilight Isle kittens. I posted gifs in an event thread and people had to duel to get a kitten. Another night she gave out Silver Nobles because I was a super rich Squire thanks to my Baron at the time, Shadow.

My tl;dr point is: I disagree wholeheartedly that coming up with ideas for events and titles, “make up your own titles” is an elitist statement or unwelcoming. It’s a request for MORE IDEAS.

Also, I apologize for repeating some of the stuff that’s already been mentioned, but I hope that it just helps drive the point home.
