DQ Results (Intro)

Post by Goldglo »

::the corkboard directs those interested in DQ results to Matt or Kheldar’s office, where neatly printed packets are available for them to take home. Each packet contains a small disc as well as something similar to box-scores that other sports often print. The packets contain the following text, while the accompanying disc, for those who play it, allow the viewer to watch each individual match, post-match interviews, and hand-picked highlights of sly maneuvers and vicious blows::

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your interest in the results of Diamond Quest Forty-Two! If you weren’t able to attend this cycle’s event, we hope you’ll make the time next cycle to participate, or cheer on your favorite brawler! We also hope you enjoy the highlights of this past Tournament and look forward to seeing you in the rings!

DQ-XLII began with 7 participants (two Opal-holders and 5 duelers of Emerald rank) and, in a decision that surprised many, Tareth Thorn elected not to defend his title. No DQ winners from the past year fought in the tournament, while three past champions elected to try and climb the pedestal once again.

DQ-XLII welcomed back Alexandria Graziano (winner of DQ-XXX) to the event and longtime Outback brawlers like Ticallion, Anubis, and Koy were on hand for a long night of fighting. With only seven entrants (Alexandria Wells, Anubis Karos, Gork, Kheldar Drasnia, Koyliak, Matthew Simon, and Ticallion Carter) a Round Robin format was utilized allowing everyone the chance to pummel everyone else.

Biographical excerpts on all 7 duelers are available on the following pages, and you will find more detailed information along with picture profiles accessible on the accompanying disc.

For those of you with access to holo-capable devices (feel free to utilize the one inside the Outback if you don’t have one at home), the disc also contains multi-camera angled video of the entire night (edited down to just the fighting) or you can read on for written highlights and blow-by-blow recounts of each fight and imagine what it looked like. There are also interviews with each of the participants and some of the spectators (you will find these transcribed toward the end of this folder).

Whether you’re watching or reading, we hope you enjoy the experience!

We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to all of our patrons for your continued support. Whether you’re a regular, a newcomer, or someone who’s just not dropped by for a while, we welcome you to stop in for a beer or a brawl anytime!

DQ Round 1 Results

Post by Goldglo »

Round One Overview: Kheldar and Gork in the Rink; Tical and Koy on the Bridge, and Ria and Anubis in the Pit

Kheldar vs. Gork

Kheldar, who’s tasted championship status as the winner of DQ-XXXVII, opens with a long slide across the rink, taking down Gork who would love to add his picture to the Wall of Diamonds. Footing, which seems a rarity on that Rink (and we can all thank Courtnall for that), was quickly lost by both men as Gork rebounds to block Kheld’s incoming attack. Somehow finding stability enough to launch himself off the ice, Kheldar rallies for one point and then another by blocking Gork’s incoming leg. Gork, though, won’t go down easily and in a wanton flurry, rattles off four straight points including a nice juke and a well-timed trap that sends Kheldar sliding across the ice with his first loss of the evening.

Kheldar/Gork

1) Sweep/Fancy Dodge
2) Fancy AB/Chop
3) Jab/JK
4) Fancy AB/SnapK
5) Jab/Fancy Dodge
6) Fancy AB/Feint Jab
7) Fancy Leap/JK
8) Sweep/Jab

Final Score: Gork (1-0) def. Kheldar (0-1), 5-3 in 8 rounds.

-------------------------
Ria vs. Anubis

Down in the Pit, weevils scurry for safe haven right from the get-go as the two rivals trade opening kicks. Muck flies as the slaver continues his leg-onslaught, upending Ria who tries to retaliate but finds her own attack denied. Having spent too much time in the mud already, Ria brings Anubis down to her level but finds the slaver able to protect himself when she tries to overpower him. Scrambling to her feet, Ria rushes to find some time and protection, but the slaver’s used to catching people and decks her for the final point.

Ria/Anubis

1) SnapK/SnapK
2) Fancy Duck/Sweep
3) SnapK/Fancy AB
4) Sweep/Fancy Duck
5) Jab/Fancy AB
6) Fancy Leap/Jab

Final Score: Anubis (1-0) def. Ria (0-1), 5-2 in 6 rounds.

-------------------------
Koy vs. Ticallion
Up on the Bridge, both Koy and Tical struggle to retain their footing as the bridge sways back and forth under their sudden movements. Koy opens the match with a point, avoiding Tical’s strike but finds her follow-up attack too high to extend the lead. With a quick punch, she protects her legs and then tries to shake Tical off the Bridge by jumping and rocking the planks. Tical manages to hold on and also retains his footing, kicking Koy in the legs for her efforts. When he tries to take the offensive initiative, though, he finds himself denied. After trading kicks, Koy again refuses to let her opponent close and uses his momentum to propel him to a loss.

Koy/Tical

1) Sweep/Fancy Dodge
2) Jumpkick/Fancy Duck
3) Jab/Sweep
4) Fancy Leap/Fancy Leap
5) Chop/Sweep
6) Fancy AB/Jab
7) SnapK/SnapK
8) Flip/Jab

Final Score: Koyliak (1-0) def. Ticallion (0-1), 5-3 in 8 rounds.

Round Two Overview: Tical and Gork in the Can; Ria and Koy on the Fern, and Matt and Anubis on Styx.

Ticallion vs. Gork

Ticallion looks to rebound from the opening round loss and gets off to a quick two-point lead with a sweep/jab combination. Gork, never to be outdone, launches into a hard strike but somehow pulls back and away at the last moment, leaving Tical exposed. Gork, though, finds himself punched again and though he speeds away from Tical’s incoming leg, finds himself tripping over Tical’s ankle. Sensing victory, Tical lunges in and darts away, leaving Gork to grab nothing but air and a mark in the loss column.

Tical/Gork

1) Sweep/Fancy AB
2) Jab/Sweep
3) Fancy AB/Ft. Jab
4) Jab/Jumpkick
5) SnapK/Fancy Dodge
6) Sweep/Fancy AB

Final Score: Ticallion (1-1) def. Gork (1-1), 5-2 in 7 rounds.

-------------------------
Koy vs. Ria

Koy dominates the only female-female battle of the night from the getgo. After grounding (or, rather, fronding) Ria with a quick strike, she moves through a misdirected block and then flings aside Ria’s first punch. After a respite of two rounds where the ladies try to outmaneuver one another around stems and leaves, Ria finds herself kicked in the stomach and down by four points. She avoids the shutout by sending Koy to the mat, but finds herself struck again for the lopsided defeat.

2) Chop/Fancy LB
3) Ft. AB/Jab
4) Fancy Dodge/Fancy AB
5) Dodge/Duck

8) Chop/SpinK

Final Score: Koyliak (2-0) def. Ria (0-2), 5-1 in 8 rounds.

-------------------------
Matt vs. Anubis

Way up in the air, Matt goes even higher, landing a blow over Anubis’ low sweep. A backhand gets him another point, but Anubis does a high-flying act of his own to avoid a grab. The two men try to keep balance on the crossbeams and Anubis pulls back a sure attack to avoid falling, though he ties the match by sending Matt crashing into the beams. Matt gets the better end of entangled legs and then delivers a punch to regain a two-point lead. The two men trade sides on a high/low combination where no points are scored, after which Matt lures Anubis close and into a mistake that gains him the win.

Matt/Anubis

1) Fancy Leap/Sweep
2) Fancy Dodge/Jab
3) Flip/Fancy Leap
4) SnapK/Ft. Jab
5) Fancy AB/Flip

Ria’s determined to start off quick and trades blows in the opening round. With a burst of energy and some amazing momentum, Ria begins an absolute flurry of movement that lasts the next several rounds. Gork manages to keep pace and even take a lead, but it’s a precarious one until he fools Ria into slowing down and extends the lead to two points. Tired from all the exertion, Ria launches a fearsome punch but finds Gork dropping down and away in a counterattack that sends her to a third loss.

Tical vs. Kheldar

Taking their turn up on Styx, Kheldar hops over balance beams to avoid Tical’s opening punch but finds himself slammed down in an attempt to attack from the air. The two men trade brutal blows before Kheldar again goes high and gains a one-point edge. Another hard strike extends Kheldar’s lead before he tricks Tical into an ill-timed evasion and drives him off the ring.

Matt vs. Koy

Down in the Pit, Matt finds himself shoved into the muck right off when Koy evades his grasp and then follows up with a mid-level kick. Standing, he falls almost immediately when she trips him down but recovers enough to send Koy into the muck as well. With her momentum slowed, Koy tries to attack but her arm’s deflected and then she’s knocked down from the air. The speakers announce the first “SUDDEN DEATH” match of the night when the two collide in mutual sweeps, after which Matt delivers a backhand to complete the comeback.

Matt/Koy

2) SnapK/Jumpkick
3) Fancy AB/Sweep
4) Sweep/Fancy Dodge
5) Fancy AB/Chop

*At this point, apparently not wanting to continue after his bye, Anubis abruptly exited the Outback and quit the tournament.

In Round 4, Matt and Gork fight up on the Bridge while Ria and Kheldar battle up on Styx.

Matt vs. Gork

Both men open up with strong strikes to score, but Matt follows with a lure and counter to open a small lead in the second round. As the bridge rattles, the two men again mirror in dual sweeps, and then again with more punching. With the action fast and furious, the bridge creaks and sways as Matt dives low and under Gork’s high punch to take the win in what turns out to be the fastest match of the tournament.

Matt/Gork

1)Jab/Jab
2) Ft. SnapK/Fancy Dodge
3) Sweep/Sweep
4) Chop/Chop
5) Fancy Duck/Jab

Final Score: Matt (3-0) def. Gork (2-2), 5-3 in 5 rounds.

-------------------------
Ria vs. Kheldar

A battle for Crew bragging rights (Kheldar won the first over Ticallion) begins with nearly-mirrored blows, after which Ria grabs her first lead of the night by kicking Kheldar back and away. Kheldar ties the score be following Ria despite her defense, but Ria keeps up the protection and through some tricky moves, converts her way into a one point lead. Kheld re-ties the match with a straight-in shot but finds himself flat on his back when Ria tosses him over her shoulder despite his defensive stance. In a moment of indecision, Ria seems to lose a bit of confidence and fails to follow through on a sure winning maneuver. Neither Crewmate wants to lose, and Kheldar brings the match to SUDDEN DEATH with some nice footwork. Ria, though, really wants to notch her first win, and does by countering Kheldar’s final punch to claim victory!

Round 5 pits Ticallion and Matt in the Can and Koy and Gork on the Fern.

Ticallion vs. Matt

Fresh off his bye, Tical opens with a quick juke-and-counter followed by a trade in kicks. Matt ties the match by cutting off Tical’s path to freedom, but Tical drops low and under a punch to regain the lead. Tripping Matt and sending him to the ground, Tical finds himself at match point, but Matt refuses to go down quite that quickly and tricks Tical into overcommiting his attack. Leading 4-3, Tical can only be too happy to trade points, and Matt can’t pull back in time to prevent his first loss of the night.

Ria vs. Ticallion

Having bested one Crewmate already, Ria wants to beat up on Ticallion and opens up to take the lead, dropping under his punch. Tical’s not hesitating at all and trips Ria to the bartop, but she drives in with two quick strikes for two unanswered points. -------------------------
Kheldar vs. Matt

With a victory here, Matt could win the Diamond outright, but Kheld’s bound and determined to prevent that from happening. The two start out with some moves and countermoves before drilling each other with fists. Kheldar drives in a second time but finds himself deflected, and a trade keeps Matt up by one. Rounds with contact are interspersed with both men rushing around the ring, and Matt brings himself within one point of the Diamond with a backhand strike. Two miscues later and the speakers blare out the SUDDEN DEATH warning, which lasts for two rounds as the two refuse to let up on one another. Koy vs. Kheldar

Koy’s been on the Bridge before, and tries to continue her hot streak of building large leads. Just as quickly, he goes down a second time after which the battle seesaws back and forth, with each swapping the lead until the infamous SUDDEN DEATH announcement blares. Kheldar puts his ex-Diamond skills to good use, but doesn’t time his low drop quite right and Koy knocks him down a final time to put herself one step closer to the title!

Some Highlights

Post by Goldglo »

Those watching the holovid disc can view these selected highlights, including multi-angled replays and/or montages of the following:

Koy’s extremely hot match starts (going 4-0, 3-0, and 3-0 to start three of her bouts).

Gork’s four-point flurry against Kheldar in round 1 to win the match plus his two-Spinkick effort against Koy.

Matt’s comeback, down 3-0 against Koy, in their first matchup.

Ria’s seemingly tireless and intense efforts in running, jumping, blocking, and diving around all her opponents

Rounds 10 and 11 in the Kheldar/Matt fight that turned the tide.

Some nice moves by Ticallion in round 2 in his win over Gork.

Post DQ Interview with Neo

Post by Goldglo »

((Thanks to Neo's player, who was a spectator, for writing the following))

An interviewer stood in front of the Edges Of Life headquarters, a relatively un-noticeable building in RhyDin City ((Doesn't help that it's not on the map, or that no one's familliar with EoL. :P)) He opened the front door and walked in, being presented with a short hallway, two doors on the side walls, and one door on the end. He walked to the end of the hallway and knocked. "Hello? Anyone there?"

The man who answered the door looked very similar to Neo, even down to the wardrobe. However, he wore green instead of blue, looked a tad more muscular, was wearing a pair of black sunglasses, and appeared to be more laid back. "Who're you?"

"Um, are you Neo Eternity?"

"No, I'm his older brother Jin." He tilted the shades down to get a better look, and then turned toward the inside of the room. "Hey, Neo! Ya got some press dude here ta see ya!"

His voice could be heard. "Let him in."

Jin opened the door the rest of the way, giving sight to a small room with a large electronic map of RhyDin City on the opposite wall, and in the middle of the room, a couple of feet away from the wall, a metal table with a computer monitor situated on it. Closer to the wall, was a seat in which Neo Eternity sat, reclined in the chair, his feet on the table, seeming to be idly tapping the enter key on the keyboard. Ocean blue eyes shot to the interviewer. "Hello there." He returned attention to the monitor, continuing to tap enter, hitting tab once in a while.

The interviewer walked on over. "Hello there, Mr. Eternity. My name is---" He was interrupted by Neo. "Grab a seat." ((I don't want to come up with a name. :P))

He looked around, grabbed a nearby folding chair, and seated himself at the opposite side of the desk, pulling out a pen and a notebook. "Alright, sir... You were at Diamond Quest 42, right?"

"Yes, that's right. I didn't stay through the entire thing, though. Who won?"

"Um... Matthew Simon did. Anyways, tell me what you thought of it."

He stopped tapping the enter key and turned to face the interviewer. "Well, the dueling was great... I wasn't aware that there was an expensive video and audio system in there for some reason, but it was really nice. I wasn't fully concentrated on watching though, because I... And don't ask how... was attending Fight Night at the same time."

"How?"

"Ugh, you asked. I don't know how. Anyways, what I did watch was quite enjoyable. I will be attending the next one, for sure. That all?"

"Yeah, that should be it."

"Cool, it was nice to meet you, Mr...?" The interviewer seemed to be in a hurry now. "Sorry, I've gotta go." And he was already gone.

Neo looked to the monitor and resumed his idle tapping.

Post-DQ Interview with Ticallion Carter

Post by Goldglo »

((Thanks to Tical's player for writing the following))

How do you feel about the format of the Diamond Quest this year?

What you mean the round-robin, then the little improvisation they had to have? Well, I mean, they did the best they could in the situation. Which I think was pretty good. There were only a handful of us going in, so round-robin was to be expected. Then the bracket got busted a little, so they had to fix it. Hell, it didn't matter to me how we got it done as long as we got it done and there was a chance for me to walk away with the Diamond in the end. That's what Fists is all about to me though, thinking on your feet.

How was the competition in the Diamond Quest this year?

Despite the fact we had a small field, we had some of the cream of the crop from the Outback there. Koy's is one of the toughest fights no matter how many times you step in the ring with her. Partly because she welcomes the pain. Then you have Kheldar, who's held title after title here and who I've personally seen lay people out time after time. Ria's a scrapper and she's a former Diamond so she knows how to put it down, too. And then there's Matt, I mean this is what the guy's 5th time winning it? That alone speaks for itself.

How do you feel about your own personal performance, what do you think was your toughest match in the tournament?

Personally? I think my performance wasn't what I wanted it to be. I mean it just tells me I need to focus a little more. I've never been able to close these things out. Partly because of the fact that my toughest match was probably my first. Like I said earlier, Koy's tough and she just opened strong and I never could quite catch up to her, especially because we both had to contend with the Bridge as well. I expected her to take it home after that. I mean there were a few bright spots, my fights in the Can with Gork and Matt. If wish I could've fought in the Can the whole time. Oh well, you take that and you learn from it and you come back stronger next Diamond Quest.

Alright Tical, any highlights of the night for us?

Well, when you're participating in these, you really don't get a chance to watch too many of the matches all the way through, I usually just catch the highlights at home later on. But I'd say that going with the winner is usually a good pick. Matt taking the thing home was a highlight, I mean it's his fifth one so that's major. Plus, that last duel with Koy and him was crazy, they both are tough so just watching them clash like that is an experience. Then it went back and forth and naturally went to Sudden Death. So if there was a "big moment" it was that final match.
