I had the honor of calling this evening's challenge, and it was every bit as spectacular and spicy as you might expect! It took all three matches to decide upon the winner, too.
The first match opened with both Archmage and challenger utilizing a shielding spell. They largely remained on a defensive note through the first few rounds, but once Doran found a lead in the second round, he kept it through to the finish. Myth fought hard to gain momentum, but he was unable to catch up to the Archmage.
The first match ended in ten rounds, with a score of 5.5 – 3 in Doran's favor.
The two spellcasters began the second match on a defensive note, too, and Doran was again the first to score, but Myth was not going to let him run away with this match, or the challenge. In the second round, Myth took his first lead of the night. Doran was quick to retake the lead in the very next round, but it wouldn't last much longer than that. Myth quickly tied things and again took the lead, which he kept until the ninth round, when Doran tied things. Once more, the Archmage soon took the lead again, but Myth dug in deep and fought his way back to victory.
The second match lasted fourteen rounds, and concluded with a score of 5.5 – 4.5, in Myth's favor.
We had a brief lull after the second match as the Archmage admitted to being tempted to concede. Though he was advised that he
could concede, if he wished, he ultimately decided to continue on, citing that he felt it would be unfair to both Myth and the audience of family, friends, and Keepers for him to do so. He invoked a little Shakespeare with his decision, imploring Myth to "lay on, MacDuff."
The third and final match of the evening was a fast and furious display of spellcasting. Once more, the Archmage was the first on the board, and soon after, Myth tied things up. The two remained tied for three rounds, each progressing inch by inch, until Doran broke the pattern, gained a lead, and kept it for the rest of the match to secure his
fifth defense of the Citadel of the Stars.
This match wrapped up in a blazing six rounds total, with a score of 5 – 2.5, in Doran's favor.
