Last Love Song
By Matt Costa

If I'd never heard your voice
Never known its pleasant sound
My time on earth would be
Dissonant discord
If I'd never heard your voice

If I'd never touched your hand
I'd mistake love for a blade
Didn't know what to expect that night
But it was someone I could
Hold through my whole life

If I'd never seen your face
Never known my other half
I'd be half the man I have come to be
You're the reason why
Love makes people sing
Today is our anniversary

Love you

Love you

Love you

Right Now by James Bay

Hold me, hold me
Oh, I want to feel you now
Do we, do we
Do we ever need to doubt?

We can do no wrong, so we must be long
Overdue a life together

When will I know? When will it be
The right time to show you you're the only one for me?
Thought I needed a sign, thought you needed a scene
But I look deep into your eyes, and it's obvious to me
That it's right, right now
That it's right, right now

See me, see me
You only see me for who I am
You ought, oh, you ought
You ought to know it, but you hold my hand

This is all we want, so we must be long
Overdue a life together

When will I know? When will it be
The right time to show you you're the only one for me?
Thought I needed a sign, thought you needed a scene
But I look deep into your eyes, and it's obvious to me
That it's right, right now
That it's right, right now
There can be no doubt
That it's right, right now

Words on my chest, I just can't bear
Want to tell you no one compares to you

When will I know? When will it be
The right time to show you you're the only one for me?
Thought I needed a sign, thought you needed a scene
But I look deep into your eyes, and it's obvious to me
That it's right, right now
That it's right, right now
There can be no doubt
That it's right, right (now), right, right, right now

The Sleeping Beauty Ballet, Op. 66, Act II: The Vision: Entr’acte

“Tchaikovsky did write music for the soul. The human soul cannot exist without love, nor can it exist without loss. These are the things that make us human, and in every one of his melodies, emotion is to be found in abundance. Yet what so many fail to understand is that this is exactly why The Nutcracker stands tall as the most truly tragic of his works; it is a product of passion, of grief. It is that product of emotions that we want so desperately to hide, to make nonexistent, as we fear what may come about were they to be actively acknowledged, and yet it is the fact that this remains true for nearly everyone that draws out the profound tragedy present within Tchaikovsky’s story about Sugarplum Fairies and nutcracker dolls.

Nothing strikes the human soul so hard as a reminder of our innocence, as a reminder of the magical way that things once were and our longing to return to that point because, through it, we’re reminded of so much more. We’re reminded of the fact that things change, sometimes bad, sometimes good, but things move on. We’re reminded of the fact that people die, and it hurts, but that the cost of being loved so much is being missed just the same. We’re reminded of how great the old things are, but also how important it is to look to the future with hope. Tchaikovsky may be gone, but his message born from one human soul to another stands taller in today’s world, one of mechanical need and spiritual loss than they ever have before. It isn’t difficult to comprehend, one needs only be human to do so, and yet doing so strums strings in the human soul so key to our very existence as creatures of God or science or anything else under the great blue sky that modern life itself should be scolded for having forgotten, having lived on such a half-truth. His message, Tchaikovsky’s, was this:

Tragedy, in all of its forms, in all of its ways, is best served when forged in the fires of a burning heart.” -Caleb Wallis

Heaven by Calum Scott

I used to count the stars in the sky
Now I count the ones in your eyes
I used to think that my paradise
Was somewhere waiting on the other side, but you, ooh, ooh
Take me higher than I've been
Laying hands on my skin, it's true, ooh, ooh
Nothing compares to you

So tell me why, what good is life
If we're all just waiting to dance in the sky?
I'm already there, here in your eyes
We climb the gates, every time that you lie down next to mе

I rest in peace
Thеy say it's better, but how could that be?
If everyone had a love like us
They wouldn't call that place above, Heaven

Waking up to you feels like a pinch-myself moment
If we're only here for a while
I wanna spend all of it holding you, ooh, ooh
Take me higher than I've been
Got me questioning everything I knew, ooh, ooh
'Cause nothing compares to you

So tell me why, what good is life
If we're all just waiting to dance in the sky?
I'm already there, here in your eyes
We climb the gates, every time that you lie down next to mе

I rest in peace
Thеy say it's better, but how could that be?
If everyone had a love like us
They wouldn't call that place above, Heaven

Nothing comes, nothing comes close to this
Lookin' up, lookin' up even if it exists
My heaven is on your lips

So tell me why, what good is life
If we're all just waiting to dance in the sky?
I'm already there, here in your eyes
We climb the gates, every time that you lie down next to mе

I rest in peace
Thеy say it's better, but how could that be?
If everyone had a love like us
They wouldn't call that place above, Heaven

Meet Me In the Woods by Lord Huron

I took a little journey to the unknown
And I've come back changed, I can feel it in my bones
I fucked with forces that our eyes can't see
Now the darkness got a hold on me
Oh, the darkness got a hold on me

How long baby have I been away?
Oh, it feels like ages, though you say it's only days
There ain't language for the things I've seen, yeah
And the truth is stranger than my own worst dreams
The truth is stranger than all my dreams
Oh, the darkness got a hold on me

I have seen what the darkness does
Say goodbye to who I was
I ain't never been away so long
Don't look back, them days are gone
Follow me into the endless night
I can bring your fears to life
Show me yours and I'll show you mine
Meet me in the woods tonight

The truth is stranger than my own worst dreams
Oh, the darkness got a hold on me
I have seen what the darkness does
Say goodbye to who I was
I ain't never been away so long
Don't look back, them days are gone
Follow me into the endless night
I can bring your fears to life
Show me yours and I'll show you mine
Meet me in the woods tonight

Dear Reader

Dear reader
If it feels like a trap, you're already in one
Dear reader
Get out your map, pick somewhere and just run
Dear reader
Burn all the files, desert all your past lives
And if you don't recognize yourself
That means you did it right

Never take advice from someone who's falling apart
Never take advice from someone who's falling apart
(You should find another)
Dear reader
Bend when you can, snap when you have to
Dear reader
You don't have to answer, just 'cause they asked you
(You should find another)
Dear reader
The greatest of luxuries is your secrets
Dear reader
When you aim at the devil make sure you don't miss
Never take advice from someone who's falling apart
Never take advice from someone who's falling apart
So I wander through these nights
I prefer hiding in plain sight

My fourth drink in my hand
These desperate prayers of a cursed man
Spilling out to you for free
But darling, darling, please
You wouldn't take my word for it
If you knew who was talking

If you knew where I was walking
To a house, not a home, all alone 'cause nobody's there
Where I pace in my pen and
My friends found friends who care
No one sees when you lose
When you're playing solitaire
You should find another guiding light
Guiding light
But I shine so bright
You should find another guiding light
Guiding light
But I shine so bright

You should find another
You should find another
Guiding light
But I shine so bright
You should find another
You should find another

The Seed

Just like the seed
I don't know where to go
Through dirt and shadow, I grow
I'm reaching light through the struggle
Just like the seed
I'm chasing the wonder
I unravel myself
All in slow motion

You cannot eat money, oh no
You cannot eat money, oh no
When the last tree has fallen
And the rivers are poisoned
You cannot eat money, oh no
You cannot eat money, oh no
You cannot eat money, oh no
When the last tree has fallen
And the rivers are poisoned
You cannot eat money, oh no
Oh no

Suffocate me
So my tears can be rain
I will water the ground where I stand
So the flowers can grow back again
'Cause just like the seed
Everything wants to live
We are burning our fingers
But we learn and forgive

You cannot eat money, oh no
You cannot eat money, oh no
When the last tree has fallen
And the rivers are poisoned
You cannot eat money, oh no
You cannot eat money, oh no
You cannot eat money, oh no
When the last tree has fallen
And the rivers are poisoned
You cannot eat money, oh no
Oh no

Feed me sunlight, feed me air
In a place where nothing matters
Feed me truth and feed me prayer (dancing around a shooting star)
And every cell remembers
Feed me sunlight, feed me air (that have taken us this far)
I see images of killer whales
Feed me truth and feed me prayers (sleeping in a desert trail)
Dreaming of a parallel world where nothing ever hurts
Dreaming of a parallel world where nothing ever hurts

You cannot eat money, oh no
You cannot eat money, oh no
When the last tree has fallen
And the rivers are poisoned
You cannot eat money, oh no
You cannot eat money, oh no
You cannot eat money, oh no
When the last tree has fallen
And the rivers are poisoned
You cannot eat money, oh no
Oh no

Dance on the Moon

This voice is calling for a touch to be undone
I hope love will come to us again
As a place we all can come
And if I'm blinded, will my eyes become the planets?
Will I float or will I drown?
This voice, is it calling for the world to pull me down?
I feel time
Looking out my window
Watching me dance on the moon
I feel time
Looking out my window
Watching me dance on the moon
Oh-eh-oh-eh-oh-ah
Oh-eh-oh-eh-oh-ah
Oh-eh-oh-eh-oh-ah
Oh-eh-oh-ah
Eh-oh-eh-oh-ah
Oh-eh-oh-ah
I dance as I'm falling, but I never touch the ground
One day I will penetrate the earth
And explode in motion sounds
And if I listen, will my mouth be filled with fire?
Will I laugh? Will I cry?
This time, I'll become everyone, and the world will wonder why
I feel time
Looking out my window
Watching me dance on the moon
I feel time
Looking out my window
Watching me dance on the moon
I'm an angel
I'm an atom when nobody enters my room
I feel time
I feel time
I feel time, I feel time
I feel time, I feel time
I feel time, I feel time
I feel time, I feel time
I feel time
Looking out my window
Watching me dance on the moon
I feel time
Looking out my window
Watching me dance on the moon
I feel time
I'm an angel, I'm an atom
When nobody enters my room
I feel time
I feel time

Who We Love

By Sam Smith and & Ed Sheeran

Colour the empty space
Kiss in a crowded place
Stand in the summer rain
Tangled in awkward shapes
A new, but familiar taste
You're feeling it all again

It's not wrong
To want the world for someone
It's not a feeling you can run from
'Cause we love who we love
So let go
You don't know better than your heart knows
Whether they're here or long gone
And we love who we love
Yeah, we love who we love

Footprints along the sand
Whispers of sweet romance
Sound of a wedding band
Holding hands in the street
No need to be discreet
Finally feeling free

It's not wrong
To want the world for someone
It's not a feeling you can run from
'Cause we love who we love
So let go
You don't know better than your heart knows
Whether they're here or long gone
Yeah, we love who we love
Yeah, we love who we love

The universe has pulled us closer
I trust whatever's brought me here to you
You can never lose
If love is what you feel then

It's not wrong
To want the world for someone
It's not a feeling you can run from
'Cause we love who we love
So let go (so let go, my love)
You don't know better than your heart knows
Whether they're here or long gone
We love who we love
Yeah, we love who we love

Another favorite warmup song for Josie in the studio.

Queendom

The underdogs are my lions
The silent ones are my choir
The women will be my soldiers
With the weight of life on their shoulders

Drink until you've had enough
I'll drink from your hands
I will be your warrior
I will be your lamb
Oh-eh-oh-ah, eh-ah, ah-ah-ah
Ha-eh-oh-eh-ah, eh-oh-oh-eh-oh

'Til queendom come
'Til queendom come
My queendom come
My queendom come

The sea waves are my evening gown
And the sun on my head is my crown
I made this queendom on my own
And all the mountains are my throne (Ah)

Drink until you've had enough
I'll drink from your hands
I will be your warrior
I will be your lamb
Oh-eh-oh-ah, eh-ah, ah-ah-ah
Ha-eh-oh-eh-ah, eh-oh-oh-eh-oh

'Til queendom come
'Til queendom come
My queendom come
My queendom come

There I Said It

By Adam Lambert

You say you want the truth
But you can't take it
So I give you lies
I give you lies
You say you want the best
But you destroy it
So I keep it inside
I keep it inside

I'll tell ya something
It's a double-edged sword you're giving
And I can't see the truth in living
When we hide behind a wall of fear
And you don't see it
It's a twisted dream you believe in
And what's the use in pretending
Let's make the smoke and mirrors disappear

So there I said it
And I won't apologize to you anymore
'Cause I'm a grown-ass man
And I won't live again
And I'm sick and tired of living in your shadow
So there I said it
I won't apologize to you anymore
'Cause I'm a grown-ass man
And I don't understand
Why I should be living in the shadows
So there I said it

You wanna hear my voice
My mind, my demons
But not too much
Or you'll give up

I'll tell ya something
It's a double-edged sword you're giving
And I can't see the truth in living
When we hide behind a wall of fear
And you don't see it
It's a twisted dream you believe in
And what's the use in pretending
Let's make the smoke and mirrors disappear

So there I said it
And I won't apologize to you anymore
'Cause I'm a grown-ass man
And I won't live again
And I'm sick and tired of living in your shadow
So there I said it
I won't apologize to you anymore
'Cause I'm a grown-ass man
And I don't understand
Why I should be living in the shadows
So there I said it

Rescue by James Bay

I found you all alone
I came to warm your bones
There were twenty million tears in your hands
You found me in the dark
You came to heal my scars
I was slipping, sinking through the sand

They say the more you love the harder you fall
But I would rather hurt than nothing at all
Through the good, through the bad
Through the lonely
I always rescue you
You always rescue me

We never draw the line
But only 'cause you're mine
Only 'cause you promise me I'm yours
You made me fall apart
My sewn together heart
Is better when you're walking through the door
You know you keep me alive, oh

They say the more you love the harder you fall
But I would rather hurt than nothing at all
Through the good, through the bad
Through the lonely
I always rescue you
You always rescue me
I rescue you
And you rescue me

I shelter you, you guide me
I lose myself, you find me
I shelter you, you guide me
I shelter you

They say the more you love the harder you fall
But I would rather hurt than nothing at all
Through the good, through the bad
Through the lonely
I always rescue you
You always rescue me

I always rescue you
I rescue you
You always rescue me
You rescue me
I always rescue you
I rescue you
Oh, I always rescue you
You always rescue me

About three and a half years ago I made a new acquaintance who has, in the years that followed, become a friend and been a pretty sweet writing partner. I really feel I've grown not only as a writer, but also as a person, due in part to our friendship. So I just want to say thanks for being you, for always being a bright spot, and I'm looking forward to whatever trouble our characters get into in the future :)

And for the rest of you, here's the lovely proposal Cane 'wrote' for Isaac by way of song.

Make Your Own Kind of Music

Nobody can tell ya
There's only one song worth singin',
They may try and sell ya,
'Cause it hangs them up to see someone like you.
But you've gotta make your own music
Sing your own special song,
Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along.
You're gonna be nowhere
The loneliest kind of lonely,
It may be rough goin',
Just to do your thing's the hardest thing to do.
But you've gotta make your own music
Sing your own special song,
Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along.
So if you cannot take my hand,
And if you must be goin’,
I will understand.
But you've gotta make your own music
Sing your own special song,
Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along.

Sharing a Cigarette with Joan of Arc, Dante Émile

Sharing a Cigarette with Joan of Arc
& she says, to be touched by God is to be destined to early fire. It's winter. You met her by the emergency exit of some seedy Parisian bar. Told her you liked her hair, she told you she'd cut it herself. Her wine-stained lips ask you if you have a light. She wears her father's jacket & her brother's shoes, both a bit too big on her. Sleeves covering up her red-cold hands. Says she doesn't mind, says she's used to feeling small. Once an angel speaks to you, you are no longer a girl but a bird. Up to you to figure out how your wings work. She gives you your lighter back. Joan speaks out the edge of her mouth, hand-rolled cig hanging on her thin white lips. You tell her you can't roll your own, your hands shake too much, & she takes out her pouch. It's not the flame I fear, she speaks as her slender fingers pack tobacco on paper, but the ashes. I don't want them to keep me. As a saint you lose all autonomy, your body is not yours to bury. There's a field back in Domémy I used to go to as a child, her voice seems to carry time itself within, you put your lighter in your pocket, save it as a relic, where the flowers could grow unbothered. Once, from the corner of my eye, I saw a small fox chase around a butterfly. I stood very still, held my breath, thought to myself: may I always stay this insignificant, may I always be nothing but part of the
landscape.

None of that matters when God has plans for you.
I still love him, I just wish he'd leave me alone. Nothing but the smell of smoke in the air. The sky empty except for her hands. When they burn her, two sparrows will rise from her charred remains, omens of a future in which her name is constantly lit by candlelight. You know this because you've seen it before; over & over, you've seen Joan die. In poets' tongues & in the tip of the artist's fingers. In the sound a young girl's hair makes when it falls on her shoulders, in the way a boy creates himself with a pair of kitchen scissors & his parents' dismissal. Patron saint of non-conformists, angel of the oversized sweater, of the buzzeut & the transsexual. May your cigarette ash linger forever. I'm going back inside, she says (boy girl soldier sweet apparition),catch you later.

(Joan of Arc is very close to Josie’s heart for many reasons. Thank you to Cane’s writer for this gem!)
