Challenges, Callers, & Barons

Post by Conner Reid »

On Saturday, May 30, we encountered an unusual and unprecedented situation where the agreed-upon caller for the Dockside challenge was the only renegade baron present who was able to and interested in interceding on an Overlord Test of Worthiness. Because I was present and able to immediately step in as an unbiased caller, I gave approval for the intercession, and took over the calling for the remainder of the challenge.

After discussion among the DoS team, we won’t be repeating this situation. From this point forward, callers may not step in or involve themselves in challenges at the last moment, even if another caller is available to take over.

Last minute drama during challenges is part of what is special and fun about DoS. But there are several reasons why a baron-caller should not involve themselves in a challenge. First and foremost, there are logistical challenges -- callers are required to be arranged and approved by both fighters in advance. This makes sure the caller has the time cleared, is prepared, and agrees to take on the responsibilities of the challenge and the report. Additionally, arranging callers in advance gives time to the fighters to select a caller they’re comfortable with -- time which is not available during a last minute swap. Logistically, a last minute caller swap is not ideal. It should be an exception necessitated only by OOC circumstances beyond the caller’s control.

In the future, if a caller is unable to officiate due to OOC circumstances they should inform the challenge participants. If it is less than 24 hours until the challenge, they should also inform the DoS HC or AC.

We hope that provides some clarity for everyone moving forward. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask here or to DM any of the DoS staff members.
