The Stolen Child by W.B. Yeats

Post by Bailey Raptis »

((Mason's player introduced me to this poem, and it served as an inspiration for this thread, this thread, and my original folder's name.))

The Stolen Child
W. B. Yeats, 1865 - 1939

Where dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water rats;
There we’ve hid our faery vats,
Full of berrys
And of reddest stolen cherries.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.

Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim gray sands with light,
Far off by furthest Rosses
We foot it all the night,
Weaving olden dances
Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight;
To and fro we leap
And chase the frothy bubbles,
While the world is full of troubles
And anxious in its sleep.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.

Where the wandering water gushes
From the hills above Glen-Car,
In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star,
We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.

Away with us he’s going,
The solemn-eyed:
He’ll hear no more the lowing
Of the calves on the warm hillside
Or the kettle on the hob
Sing peace into his breast,
Or see the brown mice bob
Round and round the oatmeal chest.
For he comes, the human child,
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than he can understand.

I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat quietly, agreed politely
I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything

You held me down, but I got up (hey!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, your hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up
Get ready 'cause I had enough
I see it all, I see it now

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar!

Now I'm floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero

You held me down, but I got up (hey!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, your hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up
Get ready 'cause I've had enough
I see it all, I see it now

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar!

Roar, roar, roar, roar, roar!

Low Roar : I'll Keep Coming

Faintly I'll go
To take this head on

Soon I'll come around
Lost and never found
Waiting for my words
Seen but never heard
Buried underground
But I'll keep coming

Wipe those tears off
And make your heart proud

Soon I'll come around
Lost and never found
Waiting for my words
Seen but never heard
Buried underground
But I'll keep coming

I'll keep coming

Storyline: The Deep Dreaming

Whatsername by Green Day

Thought I ran into you down on the street
Then it turned out to only be a dream
I made a point to burn all of the photographs
She went away and then I took a different path
I remember the face
But I can't recall the name
Now I wonder how whatsername has been

Seems that she disappeared without a trace
Did she ever marry old what's his face
I made a point to burn all of the photographs
She went away and then I took a different path
I remember the face
But I can't recall the name
Now I wonder how whatsername has been

Remember, whatever
It seems like forever to go
Remember, whatever
It seems like forever ago
The regrets are useless in my mind
She's in my head
I must confess
The regrets are useless in my mind
She's in my head
So long ago

And in the darkest night
If my memory serves me right
I'll never turn back time

Forgetting you, but not the time

Credit where credit's due: a piece of the dialogue in the latest Coup de Main post is inspired by one of Kendrick Lamar's bars toward the end of King's Dead (video link, lyrics NSFW).

The title and slogan from the "Bailey for May Queen" post and poster come from this excellent song by Perfume Genius.

Queen by Perfume Genius

Don't you know your queen?
Ripped, heaving
Flower bloom at my feet
Don't you know your queen?
Cracked, peeling
Riddled with disease
Don’t you know me?

No family is safe
When I sashay

Don't you know your queen?
Gleaming
Wrapped in golden leaves
Don’t you know me?
Rank, ragged
Skin sewn on in sheets
Casing the barracks
For an ass to break and harness into the fold

No family is safe
When I sashay

I used a chunk of this song for a while as my signature, and I reused it for as an epigraph for a recent post. It's not a perfect thematic match, but it closely reflects a lot of the conflict Bailey faced both with elements of Faerie and the Stolen Ones in RhyDin.

"Haemoglobin" by Placebo

I was hanging from a tree
Unaccustomed to such violence
Jesus looking down on me
I'm prepared for one big silence

How'd I ever end up here?
Must be through some lack of kindness
And it seemed to dawn on me
Haemoglobin is the key

[Chorus]
Haemoglobin is the key
To a healthy heartbeat
Haemoglobin is the key
To a healthy heartbeat

At the time they cut me free
I was brimming with defiance
Doctors looking down on me
Breaking every law of science

How'd I ever end up here?
Reaching strain of color blindness
Then it seemed to dawn on me
Haemoglobin is the key

[Chorus] x2

Now my feet don't touch the ground
Now my feet don't touch the ground, go
Now my feet don't touch the ground
Now my feet don't touch the ground

As they drag me to my feet
I was filled with incoherence
Theories of conspiracy
The whole world wants my disappearance

I'll go fighting nail and teeth
You've never seen such perseverance
Gonna make you scared of me
'Cause haemoglobin is the key

[Chorus] x2

Now my feet don't touch the ground
Now my feet don't touch the ground, go
Now my feet don't touch the ground
Now my feet don't touch the ground, go

Now my feet don't touch the ground
Now my feet don't touch the ground, go
Now my feet don't touch the ground
Now my feet don't touch the ground

There's a lot of musical inspiration already in Protège-moi, but I couldn't resist slipping in one last turn of phrase inspired by the spacey rock band Spiritualized at the end of the post: "She Kissed Me (It Felt Like a Hit)".
