I've been trying to avoid all the commercials and trailers for this movie so that when we go see it there will still be some surprises.

I did the same thing. I only watched the very first trailer and read the New York Times review.

The commercials and trailers don't even scratch the surface. The special effects are, in a word, awesome. The people who worked on this movie had an eye to the detail, down to the shadow a moon cast on the gas giant Pandora orbits.

I LOVE the new "depth of vision" filming technology they use in "Avatar" because it emmerses you in the setting environment without making you feel like you are going to get hit in the face with some flying object like typical old 3D. The fantastical world of Pandora with all it's elaborate creatures and colorful foilage were just incredible and how they mixed technological with primitive cultures in a violent clash was spectacular too. Unfortunately, James Cameron is the typical Hollywood activist using the cheesiest dialogue and gross characterizations of different factions like military personell and native american peoples to try to make a very simlistic point about corporate aggression on primitive cultures. "The People" of the forest were way TOOOO perfect, not a bad apple in the bunch, though I do love how they had a great connection to their home planet through that crazy bioelectrical matrix.

With a much better written script that movie could have gone down as one of the best ever, instead it's another good movie that left me with a lot of .."yeah buts.."

So.. it sucked, and was too damned preachy(Ferngully) but looked snazzy? (Steroids)

I don't much care for preachy movies. Even Wall-E was a bit too much for me. :)

Avatar.... IMAX 3-D ...

ROCKS!!

You gotta go see it that way. It's Awesome! Love the new technology, too. Glasses were better, not the red/blue ones you have to have both eyes working to see it. I didn't get a headache this time. yay! 8)
