Winter Storm Hannibal

Post by Poppy Welby »

Reports are filtering in through local tv, radio, and print media of a massive winter storm headed to hit the city next weekend. The worst of the storm is supposed to hit on Friday night continuing into mid-afternoon Saturday. Additional snow may also fall on Sunday even as the city tries to dig itself out.

Keep watch on the local news media for additional information.

((Winter Storm Hannibal will be a completely open Community Event scheduled for this coming weekend. We ask that everyone be allowed to participate (so, please, no attempts to control the weather). Reports will continue through the week and into the weekend about the amount of snow that's falling and how the city is handling it. We encourage you to ruuuuun with your ideas but if you would like to clear anything please don't hesitate to drop me a PM! As always, this SL can be as serious or as lighthearted as you wish to make it. It is also your right to decide whether or not you will ignore it or play into it.

We are looking forward to having a great time bringing a snow-pocalypse down on RhyDin and cannot wait to see where you all take it! Thanks so much!))

Transcript from Good Morning, RhyDin! - Weather Segment

Aired Mon., Feb 25, 2013 - 7:15 am RT

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ROCKY NAIR, ANCHOR: The long range weather models have been flipping back and forth between extremes for this coming weekend. For more information on that, we're going to join Poppy Welby in the Channel Five Weather Center here in Stars End. So, Poppy, what can we expect for next weekend?

POPPY WELBY, METEOROLOGIST: Well, Rocky, there is definitely going to be snow. This massive winter storm has been named Hannibal and everyone agrees that it is going to bring a massive amount of snow to the city. The question remains, though, just how much snow is going to fall. Forecasts remain in the 8-20 inches range for snow accumulation this weekend.

ROCKY NAIR, ANCHOR: That’s quite a wide range there, Poppy. Any idea when we’ll get a clearer picture?

POPPY WELBY, METEOROLOGIST: Hopefully as the storm approaches, we will get a better idea of just how much snow it’s going to bring. It appears that the worst of the snow will start Friday evening and run through Saturday mid-afternoon but it appears there might be additional snowfall on Sunday.

This sort of snow would obviously have an impact on the roads so expect delays when traveling around the city. Also, if you have a flight out of Stars End next weekend, better check with your carrier before heading there as there may also be flight delays. High winds are expected to accompany the storm, meaning that we may also be facing downed trees and damage to homes.

We will continue to watch this storm here in the Channel Five Weather Center and bring reports to the public as additional information becomes available.

Back to you, Rocky.

ROCKY NAIR, ANCHOR: We will definitely be watching those reports. Thank you. Now we’re going to send it to Brad Acer with sports. Brad?

Transcript from Good Evening, RhyDin! - Weather Segment

Aired Wed., Feb 27, 2013 - 6:15 pm RT

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ROCKY NAIR, ANCHOR: The city is buzzing with news of impending Winter Storm Hannibal! For more information on what to expect over the next couple of days, here’s Channel Five’s own, Poppy Welby. Poppy, I’m guessing you’re one busy woman right now.

POPPY WELBY, METEOROLOGIST: We’re definitely staying busy here in the Stars End Channel Five Weather Center, Rocky! Hannibal is definitely a monster of a storm. We’re still looking at between 8-20 inches but we here in the Channel Five Weather Center believe it will be in the higher end of that range.

ROCKY NAIR, ANCHOR: And if I understand correctly, Poppy, that 8-20 inches is just from Friday evening until Saturday evening but more is expected on Sunday correct?

POPPY WELBY, METEOROLOGIST: Exactly! The couple of inches that we’re expecting Sunday after wouldn’t be such a big deal if it weren’t for the fact that there will already be so much on the ground from Hannibal.

Citizens of RhyDin need to take this storm seriously. Already shelters are being opened in neighborhoods across the metro area sponsored by the Clandestine Order of Scathach and Dominion Exports in conjunction with Silver Mark Brewery. The RhyDin Welcome Centers have also made statements that they will open their doors to those in need of warm shelter through the storm. If you’re planning on riding it out at home, particularly in an outlying area, make sure you have several days supply of food, check on elderly and homebound neighbors, and stay tuned to Channel Five for closings.

We will continue to watch this storm here in the Channel Five Weather Center and bring reports to the public as additional information becomes available.

Back to you, Rocky.

ROCKY NAIR, ANCHOR: Thank you, Poppy! Now for a rundown on what to expect from tonight’s Tower of Earth challenge between Keeper Jacen and his challenger, Jesse, let’s turn it over to Sports.

Following the announcement from the Governor's Office, the Rhydin Air & Space Guard sent this to the same outlets as well:

Rhydin [All Districts] / Star's End Port Authority – March 1, 6:04am –

For the sake of safety consideration of its pilots and crew, the RASG will suspend airborne operations and patrols over Rhydin while snowstorm Hannibal passes through. While measures are in place that will allow for atmospheric flight during the storm if absolutely necessary, the RASG will only employ those measures in am emergency situation.

However, RASG spaceborne operations will continue; extra SWACS are currently deployed in orbit to communicate and coordinate both Rhydin and Star's End, as are fuel-transports and several additional pilots and ships from the 209th Kestrels Long-Range Reconnaissance & Early Warning Squadron (VR-209) & the 301st Firebees Atmospheric Defense Squadron (VA-301). Contingents from those squadrons will remain on patrol in orbit starting now, for the duration of the storm.

The RASG Headquarters will remain in operation as well, though with minimal staffing after 12pm today, in order to coordinate response to emergencies that arise during the storm. As soon as it's deemed safe for crews to return to aerial flight, atmospheric operations will resume.

The RASG urges all citizens to follow established safety protocols and advisories, report to the nearest shelter if necessary and to stay safe over the next thirty-six hours.
