How do I duel?

The first step is finding someone in the room with you willing to duel. One way is asking if anyone wants to duel, the other is using the Nexus Bot command ?LFD. The LFD (Looking for Duel) command will put you in a special role so that other duelists will know you’re interested in a match.

Second is requesting your duel to the Nexus Guide via direct message (DM). The How To guide for interacting with the Nexus Guide bot can be found here under Dueling: https://rhydin.org/info/bot_tutorial.php
Example: the command [ ?stab x “Kalamere” ] will create a DoS duel request for the Annex against Kalamere.

Third is sending your move to the Nexus Guide via direct message (DM). Do not send your move to the room and do not role-play out your action for your move in the room yet. (Please see number 3 under Dueling in the Bot Tutorial https://rhydin.org/info/bot_tutorial.php for how to send your move to the Nexus Guide.)

Fourth is waiting until the Nexus Guide bot has sent the results of the round to the room so that you will know what your opponent has done for that round also.

Fifth is now you role-play out the results of the round in the chat room.

You are welcomed and encouraged to role-play the waiting and watching looking for openings in your opponent's defenses or circling them etc. while you are waiting for the Nexus Guide to put your duel results into the room as sometimes it can take a bit between rounds your opponent is thinking on on what to select as their round choice.

We encourage you to role-play as much as possible while you are with us in the room as a lot of fun can be had bantering with your opponent in between the round results being put into the room by the Nexus Guide. Though Role Playing isn't required, it is generally frowned upon if there is no Role Play during the duel, itself.

What is the Nexus Guide?

The Nexus Guide is our handy dandy robotic friend. They are a neutral party similar to a referee that the two people dueling send their moves to via Direct Message. The Nexus Guide will then send into the chat room, and your direct message conversation with it, the results of that round so the players know what the result of each round is.

How do I send my moves to the Nexus Guide?

Send moves to the Nexus Guide by directly messaging it with a command. The Nexus Guide is always located at the top of the member list on the right side of your Discord client.

?m XX is the move command for the Nexus Guide, with XX representing your move code of choice. The correct way to send a move to the Nexus Guide is like this:

?m TH for instance.

Always put the ?m command and then your move when sending them in the Direct Message. For a full list of DoS move codes, send ?movelist dos to the Nexus Guide. You can also see the move codes here.

Can I use the same move twice in a row?

The only move you can use more than once at a time in this sport is Disengage. Every other move must have a different move used in the following round.

For example:

You cannot do...

1. LC
2. LC
3. HC
4. HC

You can, however, perform Disengage as many times in a row as you like.

1. DI
2. DI
3. DI
4. DI

Is okay.

What is a fancy and how do I use one?

A fancy is a modification that allows a defensive move that would normally only gain you a half a point, and change it to a full point, like in the case of a circular parry vs. thrust.

Normally you would gain only 1/2 point. If you were to use a fancy circular parry vs. thrust you gain a full point. To use a fancy you simply send your round move to the Nexus Guide like this ?m FCP instead of ?m CP. The F meaning Fancy!

IMPORTANT: In order to have a fancy to use, however, you must hold a rank above commoner in the standings. The standings can be found on the standings page located in the Duel of Swords menu on the left side of the web page. You can find the current standings here. It is your responsibility to stay current with where you are on the standings.

What are the moves?

These are the moves allowed in the Duel of Swords and their abbreviations. The abbreviated names are what you will send to the Nexus Guide after the ?m command.

Offensive Moves

Thrust = TH - A quick stabbing attack
Low Cut = LC - An attack towards the lower body.
High Cut = HC - An attack towards the upper body.
Slash = SL - A diagonal slice designed to destroy most defensive moves.
Stop Hit = SH - Uses an opponent's momentum against them to deliver a counter attack.

Defensive Moves

Circular Parry = CP - A deflective maneuver that protects the lower half of the body.
Lateral Parry = LP - Intercepts an attack to the upper area of the body.
Sidestep = SS - A dodge to one side.
Duck = DK - A drop into a crouch.
Disengage = DI - A backward movement meant to distance oneself from an opponent.

The first 5 are considered offensive and score a full point when successful.
The last 5 are considered defensive and are meant to be protective or to gain an advantage so they score half a point unless modified by using a fancy.

How you play the attack is up to the player. Like, a High Cut being a "raised horizontal swing" might be Role played differently from player to player, and according to the weapon a character may use.

How do I know who won?

Normally the person that gets to 5 points first is victorious in the duel. In order for this to be happen, you must have a full (1) point lead over your opponent. Until this happens however you continue to duel so you may see a higher score than this in regular dueling hours. Also it is possible to tie in this sport. A tie can happen if two duelers make it to 15 rounds and no one is a full point ahead of the other.

What happens if my opponent or I get booted?

When a duelist Disconnects or are unresponsive then you have the option to send the Nexus Guide the [ ?timer ] command and follow the directions, then after 15 minutes: if the Remaining Duelist is LOSING or TIED, the duel becomes an automatic Tie. If the Remaining Duelist is WINNING, the Remaining Duelist is given their Win.

How do I become a Warlord?

In order to become a Warlord you have to have 15 or more wins than you have losses in regular dueling hours.

How do I become a Baron?

There are several ways to become a Baron.

You are a Warlord and wish to use one of your challenge grants to issue a challenge to a current Baron and defeat them to take their ring.

You might be given the Overlord Grant and challenge a current Baron and defeat them to take their ring.

There may be a ring as a prize at the Warlord Tournament. If no ring is available, a challenge grant is sometimes offered as a prize to issue a challenge to a current Baron.

Other special tournaments are sometimes given challenge grants as prizes.

There are other, more complicated ways to earn a Barony, and are listed in the Duel of Swords rules.

How do I issue a Challenge?

The only people that can issue an official challenge are Warlords and Barons in this sport with a few exceptions to be listed below. All other challenges here are considered regular duels and take place during regular dueling hours.

If you are a Warlord or Baron and have fulfilled all the requirements to issue a challenge, you must issue the challenge on the Arena forums in a post titled "Challenge to..[XX]" where [XX] is the name of the Barony challenged. It is advised to read the Universal Terms of Challenge under the Duel of Swords Rules section found under the Duel of Swords menu on the left side of this web page.

Other duelists, providing they are listed on the standings, may issue challenge if they are given the Overlord Grant, or win a challenge right in a special tournament where a challenge grant is given as a prize.

For information on how to challenge for titles please see the Duel of Swords official rules. A link to these rules can be found here: viewtopic.php?p=183523#p183523

How do I become the Overlord?

You must be either a Warlord with (2) Rights of Challenge or a Renegade Baron to challenge the Overlord and defeat them to be the Overlord. This can be very complicated because unless you have won a tournament whose prize was an intercession free right to challenge the Overlord the reigning Overlord has the right to what is called a "Test of Worthiness" to see if you are worthy to challenge their right to hold their title of Overlord.

This means that they can have you duel someone else before they face you in a duel. If, by chance, you lose that duel, then the Overlord does not have to duel you and your challenge is considered forfeit because you would have been deemed unworthy of their time.

However, this "Test of Worthiness" is entirely up to the current Overlord. They may choose to simply duel you themselves without having another duel you first. Having this as an option is a part of what makes an Overlord challenge one of the most exciting and politically motivating parts of DoS.

For more information see the Universal Terms of Challenge.

How many fancies does each rank have to use?

Commoner = 0
Swordsman = 1
Master at Arms = 2
Grand Master = 3
Warlord = 4
Baron = 5*
Overlord = 6*

* During regular dueling hours Barons and the Overlord are restricted to using only 4 fancies against someone ranked Grand Master or below.
