East of RhyDin and currently accessible by portal only lie The Silences. I was born and raised east of them in a small farming community not even big enough to have a name. We just called it Anvil. Why? Nobody knows anymore. I left there as a young man and made my way in the larger worlds and returned some dozen years ago. Farming was not for me so I did a bit of sell sword, merc, and caravan guard. It was the last occupation that led me eventually into running caravans into the Silences which I have been doing these past four years.
I now have sufficient contacts within the Silences and Centaur City where any caravan that I guard has a 85 percent chance of success. Accordingly if you are interested in trade in the Silences and Trading consortiums may seek access by filing requested forms and financial bonds with Portal Engineering License Group in RhyDin city.
Once approval is granted a suitable device will be provided that will open and close the portal as needed. Portals are all one-way entries. License must be renewed annually. Access is guaranteed, beyond that no further warranty is provided. Trading groups are encouraged to secure the services of caravan guard organizations that have practical experience with the Silences.
Once portal is opened and the group translates through, the first thing visible to the eyes are the long, rolling hills covered with grass-like vegetation in varying shades of emerald green. Areas of the Silences have this vegetation that can reach as high as seven feet.
The arrival area is made of hardened earth properly warded to prevent unauthorized access from native sentients and non-sentients within the Silences. The trading group and their property are quite safe as long as they stay within this sheltered area. Once ready to disembark the trading group moves onto the trade route and departs the secure encampment.
BE WARNED. Once the first member of the trading group steps onto the trade route the portal closes and normal occupational risks may be encountered.
The next thing that captures the senses is the silence which settles like a heavy cloak over you. The only sound the soft soughing of the eternal winds that play there. A place of peace and quiet. Not hardly. The dense vegetation muffles sound and the winds further diminish it but at ground level life is the cheapest commodity there is for the thousands of sentients and non-sentients that live and die there unobserved. A person wandering off the trade road and/or clan roads into the bush will most likely never be found. Weak appearing caravans also have a tendency to vanish abruptly also if they leave the trade routes. Bear in mind that a side road without a clan mark at the entrance is a trap.
There are clan roads that lead to villages and towns, even a city or two but the risk is high traveling there for the clans fight one another constantly and make and break alliances at the drop of an insult. What was a safe and prosperous route may easily become a war zone. Be sure of your intel if you plan on visiting a particular clan.
Still, it is possible to live and thrive there. The center of the Silences contains a nexus that allows the traveler to reach realms that welcome the traders with open arms and more importantly open coin purses.
All manners of convoys thread the Silences on the two main trade roads and all roads meet at Centaur City where the rulers of the roads exact their tolls from travelers. Be warned. Not all tolls are coin, some cost life itself and sometimes the soul as well.
Also, competition between trading groups is fierce and on the trading routes there have been major fights between groups for whatever reason seems to be good. Only in Centaur City are you peace-bonded and that only protects you from one another. The rulers of Centaur City recognize no authority but their own so politeness is always the best policy.
I make my living there guiding and guarding caravans across the Silences. My band of drovers, mercs, and duelists are above average and we only travel the two main roads. Adventure is not what we seek nor is it desired. So, if you wish to travel the Silences to some of the outer realms you should seek elsewhere. Our contract is for a one-way trip to Centaur City. Beyond that it is your issue. We do not normally visit any of the clans for any reason. However, if you can provide documented proof from a clan guaranteeing safe passage in and out of their lands for all caravan personnel (it must say personnel as in the past some of the clans attack guards since they are not true caravan members but escorts).
Our group is available for certain high-risk expeditions into the Pristine Lands. However, payment in full is required upfront and there is no amount of money that will take a group into the temple valley or within ten standard miles.
If you are planning an expedition into the Silences I may be contacted in RhyDin city generally at the Duel of Swords establishment when I am in the city. Nothing in life or the Silences is certain but our success rate on guiding caravans to Centaur City is currently at 97 percent.
