Player Developed Settings

Post by Michelle Montoya »

Hello everyone!

In conjunction with this post here on shared settings, we invite players to add settings they have developed, and are willing to share, in this thread here. Some things to include in your post are: a brief description of the setting, examples of how others can engage with your setting, and who to contact with any questions.

Atrebla

Description
Atrebla refers to a valley town nestled within the mountains. It is located on RhyDin the planet, but is primarily accessed through a large portal fifteen minutes south of RhyDin proper. It is inspired by Jasper-Banff in the Canadian Rockies between Alberta and British Columbia. The town of Atrebla is a resort town that emphasizes camping, hiking, and snow sports. Atrebla is protected by the Guardians of Truth, and Gloria Blaze serves as the Warden of Atrebla. Michelle Montoya’s mother and siblings live in the mountains of Atrebla, overlooking the valley. This setting was originally created and developed by the players of Condextint (Dex) Montoya and Topaz Datrazanov and is now managed by Michelle Montoya’s player.

Atrebla Valley
Valley Town Visit

Guidelines
Your characters are welcome to visit Atrebla for a shopping trip, go hiking in the mountains, enjoy backcountry camping, have a season pass to the ski resort etc. Feel free to have a non-lethal confrontation with the Guardians of Truth, argue with a store manager, or get lost in the woods. Magically sensitive characters may also be aware of the layers of protection set around the valley by Gloria Blaze and others. If you want to set up a shop in the valley, or an NPC who lives or works in Atrebla, just send me a quick note.

Portals: The only portals, or portal related transportation, that works to/from/within Atrebla are those built and maintained by Gloria Blaze and the Guardians of Truth. Methods such as Shadow Walk, The Hedge, or Time Lord-esque means do not work well here. If you want to create a portal (such as one for your store or to a private campsite) or use a similar form of transport please contact me first.

ROCBG - Rhydin Observatory Complex and Botanical Garden

Description

The ROCBG was built on a land grant donated to the city of Rhydin by Briarius Ravensheart and is located behind the Ravensheart Academy's Administration Building in Dragon's Gate. Then Governor Fionna Helston al-Amat had polled citizens for opinions on uses for land parcel 34-j7f005. The Observatory Complex and Botanical Garden are public educational and entertainment facilities. Structure design and landscaping were done by Harker and Hall Architecture, Ltd.

This setting was originally created and developed by the player of Colleen MacLeod, Rhiannon Brock, and Rhiannon Harker with the cooperation of the players of Richard D Harker and Albert Hall (The creators of Harker and Hall Architecture, Ltd.) ROCBG is shown on the Rhydin Map in the Dragon's Gate District.

Guidelines

Your characters are welcome to make use of the Observatory Complex’s classrooms, swimming pool, cafe, and other amenities. Planetarium has 3 shows per day, plus special events. Movies are shown on the upper level every weekend and there are afternoon showings during the summer months. Library use is free of charge, other activities have nominal fees to cover costs; a yearly pass is available. Cafe food is made by students and professionals in the kitchen on the second level.

Guided tours of the Botanical Garden run several times a day. Info books and audio for self guided tours are available. There are public use garden plots and greenhouses in several sizes on the grounds. Some securable greenhouses are reserved for individual use; currently Mallory Maeda and Nicole Brock are using two of them.

A sampling of scheduled classes and tours for the ROCBG is listed on the Atlas page.

Want to have a character teach a class or suggest a class? Have a greenhouse for your character’s use? Please drop me a note.
Have a character in need of a job? Contact me. I welcome all all characters as employees and just want to know who is employed at any given time.
Want to have an event? Let me know the date and time that you will need and what arrangements will be needed: catering, special set up, etc.
Events can be indoors or on the grounds between the Observatory Complex and the Botanical Garden.

Portals: There’s a portal at the front of the Complex with access to the Urgent Care in Old Market’s West Side.

Contact Info
Please note that IC contact would be with Rhiannon Harker, the manager of the ROCBG.

WSOM - West Side Old Market Emergency Services and Urgent Care Center

Description

The ground and upper levels of the Fire Brigade building house an office, garage and living quarters. A small Watch Unit also works out of the building. The basement beneath it and the urgent care serves as an emergency shelter.

This setting was originally created and developed by the player of Colleen MacLeod, Rhiannon Harker, and Mairead Harker with the cooperation of the players of Richard D Harker and Albert Hall (The creators of Harker and Hall Architecture, Ltd.) WSOMEC is shown on the Rhydin Map in the Old Market District near the baronial manor/Cardinal Inn.

ROCBG - Atlas Entry
Rolodex Entry
Harker & Hall Architecture Ltd. Portfolio

Guidelines

Your characters are welcome to:

Make reports to the Watch/Fire Station, report and pick up lost/stolen property from The Watch. Call the Watch/firefighters/paramedics, as NPCs, to render aid to a crime/accident/fire/disaster scene in Old Market.
Make use of the urgent care for doctor’s visits (including pharmacy, lab, and xray) and emergency care. Minor surgeries can be done in the basement level. While the surgical wing does have the equipment for major surgeries and to handle childbirth, most of those procedures and births would be referred to and transported to Dockside, Riverview, or Rhydin General.
Take classes in Basic and advanced First Aid and CPR, they are held three times a week.

The shelter is open for everyone, singles would be housed in the bunk rooms, families would be placed in one of the larger ones. Household pets, such as dogs and cats are welcome, and supplies will be provided. Larger animals such as horses would be sent to a livery stable or appropriate location. People needing a place longer than two weeks will be offered alternative and more permanent arrangements.

Want to have a character working in any of those places as:
Watch Officer/Detective
Firefighter/EMT
Medical Professional
Receptionist
Drop me a line!

I am fine with PCs or NPCs from the WSOMEC giving help in all areas and neighborhoods of Old Market. However, please make sure that it’s cleared with any other setting creators involved first!

Portals: There’s a portal at the front of the Urgent Care with access to the Observatory Complex and the Botanical Garden in Dragon’s Gate.

Contact Info
IC contact would be with Rhiannon Harker, administrator or Colleen MacLeod, Chairmen of the MacLeod Foundation.

Nova Liberdade

Description

Nova Liberdade, formally incorporated as the Nova Liberdade Autonomous District, is a neighborhood located in west Old Temple, within close proximity of the wall that divides Old Temple from Dockside. It is .75 kilometers squared (or a little under a third of a mile squared) in area, and roughly rectangularly shaped. The main road through the neighborhood, recently rechristened Avenida do Liberdade (or Liberty Avenue), is where the main businesses and nicer apartments of Nova Liberdade are located, and takes roughly 15 minutes to walk from the northern torii gate that formally welcomes most visitors to the neighborhood to the less fancily demarcated south end of the district. The roads that run east and west into the avenue are less touristy and more working class, with businesses that cater more to residents, like groceries, hardware stores, repair shops, and the like. The houses and apartments here are more modest, too.

At the torii gate, as well as at the other entrances into Nova Liberdade, are signs that read, in Common, Japanese, and Portuguese, “Welcome to the Nova Liberdade Autonomous District”. In fact, nearly all signage in Nova Liberdade is written in those three languages. It reflects the fact that most of the neighborhoods residents come from São Amador, Brazil, or Japan originally, although there are some non-human residents and human residents with other racial and ethnic backgrounds present.

Those with faerie in their blood, however, can see an additional message on those signs: a glyph that roughly translates to read ”No True Fae Allowed.” How this edict – or any other law and order – might be enforced isn’t immediately clear. If there is a formal police force in Nova Liberdade, it does not wear traditional outfits, and any questions asked about involving the City Guard will receive a curt answer along the lines of “they have no authority here.”

Guidelines

Generally speaking, Nova Liberdade is open to the public for visiting and shopping. Becoming a resident is more difficult, and practically speaking, it is mostly limited to those who either lived there before the neighborhood became Nova Liberdade, or for those people originally from São Amador, Brazil, or Japan, or who speak Portuguese and Japanese. If you’re interested in moving a character into the neighborhood, please message me to ask.

Nova Liberdade has declared itself to be an autonomous zone, not subject to the rule of law of the traditional government strictures that RhyDin City follows – most notably, they do not acknowledge the authority of the City Guard to operate within their boundaries. The Nova Liberdade police force is more ad hoc and less visibly present in the district. The Nova Liberdade leadership will meet with City Guard folks and discuss any fugitives from justice who might flee into their neighborhood, but they will do everything in their power to keep the guard out and not just hand fugitives off to them willy-nilly.

Those with faerie blood in some way (except for Stolen Ones) will be able to read the additional message on most of the welcome signs leading into the district. Those that insist on remaining in the neighborhood will find themselves being shadowed and possibly kettled into heading out. Anyone stubborn enough to remain further will find themselves confronted by a group or groups of what appear to be giants, orcs, or ogres, who will make their best effort to get the invader to leave, by whatever means necessary. Please message me if you want your faerie-blooded character to come into the district and behave in this way.

More generally, please don’t fold, mutilate, spindle, or cause general mayhem and destruction within Nova Liberdade without checking with me.

Thanks!

Kaos Coffee

General Info

Hours of operation: Mid-morning 'til well after midnight. Seven days a week. Closed on all Major Rhy'din Holidays.

Layout

Rather than a traditional coffee shop Kaos is set up in an old storefront, which means that the service floor is a long rectangle from front to back.

The floors are old and scuffed wood, honey colored pine under the varnish. There's a walk-way down the middle of the lounge wide enough for four adult men to walk side by side comfortably that leads back to the "bar." Against the walls on either side of this "corridor" are groupings of couches, loveseats, and overstuffed arm chairs around coffee tables.

Each grouping is set up rather like someone's living room; the chair with its back against the wall facing inward, couch and loveseat facing each other over the low coffee table set conveniently in between. There's about three to five inches of space between each "section", and the sections march all the way back to the bar.
The accoustics are such that even when the lounge is packed it's possible to have a private conversation with one or more people without having to raise your voice, or lean close enough to whisper back and forth. The atmosphere is laid back but not lazy. For the most part the customer base falls into the categories of; young, upwardly mobile, beatnik-ish, trendy, moderately alternative, and centered.

As the lounge is set on the edge of what used to be a "hub" for an upper-middle class neighborhood (but is now more tuned toward those with an artistic or fringe bend), the feel is in keeping, and makes sense.
Kaos is the type of place you might bring a friend after catching a play in one of the 'Houses nearby, or meet up with friends for a quiet no-clean up evening out, or for that matter meet up with someone for one of those first date outings. Some patrons choose to settle back with a book, others bring their laptops to catch up on homework or some project or another for work, or simply to email family and friends.

The overall feel is very close to the living room of a friend, with a coffee bar at the back of course.

To the right of the front door is a small raised stage with two mid-sized speakers to be used for Tuesday nights' open mic/poetry reading event. To the left is an old upright piano, the veneer is fading and flaking here and there but it's kept perfectly in tune and damn well cared for. In the back, beside the short hall that leads to the restrooms is a pool table, a quarter a game if you feel like dealing with warped sticks.

No alcoholic drinks are served at Kaos. No food is served here. Just excellent coffee made the way you want it made, and Italian Sodas (which really are just flavored syrups and carbonated water, most often fruit of some sort, served in heavy, lead free vases instead of glasses). None of the furniture matches, none of the cups match, and none of the vases for the sodas match. There are no uniforms for the staff; only the dress code which states - tasteful please! and nothing more.

Customers bus their own tables, and order their own drinks, and no one complains about this arrangement as it keeps the cost of said drinks down to very reasonable instead of outrageous as in some other, larger establishments.

Staff

Derek, Manager. At twenty nine, and a Rhy'din native, Derek knows his way around the block, and a couple over too. Doesn't mean he's going to do anything stupid any time soon though. The boy loves his job, and totally digs the vibe the place has going on. Easily recognized by his rainbow dreads and smiling green eyes, the day shift is his domain.

Staria, Assistant Manager. A little heavy, a little cheery, and a lot nerdy, Staria has a lot going on inside that red head of hers, and isn't afraid to share her opinion when called upon to do so. From Dr. Who to Harry Potter, she wasn't afraid of being wrong, neither was she afraid of being right. Brown eyed, fair skinned, with dark red hair and a smattering of freckles across her nose, the twenty-three year old had a lot of life to live, and a lot of living in her. The evening shifts were hers and she was just as likely to be gaming at a side table as she was to be studying behind the counter.

Terri, Mid-shift. With pale blue eyes, and the foolishly arrogant attitude of most young humans, Terri looked at life like an adventure. Though that adventure might one day be the end of her. She has a ready laugh, a warm heart, and an open mind as well as a work ethic that just won't quit. While she might be the type of person to take the pill you find in your couch and tell you what it does when she's off the clock, at work she's all about her customers. Bleached blonde hair and barely more hip than a boy, tanned skin and knobby knees. She favors flowing skirts and what's come to be known as the Boho style.

Sky, Mid-Shift floater. Young, and confident with it. He's barely old enough to buy a beer after work, and had one too many arguments with Captain Morgan to ever want to drink Rum again. Not quite six feet tall, with deep blue-grey eyes and dirty blond hair. A heavy build that requires some upkeep to keep from going to seed, and a pair of dimples that just won't quit. He's good natured, and slow to rile. Though his mouth does have a tendency to run away with him when he's finally decided he's been pushed too far.

(Since Kaos is a hangout type place, and there's neither booze nor food involved, I think it'd be best if it was a violence free zone. Arguments are one thing, but all out fights should be taken "outside." Player staff are more than welcome to flesh out the four NPCs I have listed here, just ask. Feel free to use. Please don't maim, wreck, kill, slaughter, wound, trash, destroy or cause harm to. )
