The Greenhouse

Post by Anjolie Quinn »

The thick layers of steam building up against the walls of the glass-like material of the enclosure continued to press their tropical heat on all who entered despite the bipolar temperatures being experienced outside. Vines of various genus and species clung to wire supports and the warm beds of their terra cotta homes. Five rows of extremely different plants were budding and sprouting heathily under the tender guidance and love of their devoted mother. The controlled environment was disrupted only by a single woman working at a make-shift table in the front part of the greenhouse.

Four drops of something sulfuric were poured cautiously from a vile into the fertile soil of a pot placed in front of Anjolie. The contralto tones of her voice were humming in a near hypnotic manner. A piece of cork was shoved carefully into the narrow opening of the vile as it was placed securely back into a cloth-lined box. The container was being slid into a shelving system off to the side just as a knock rang out on the door. Two eyes of serene blue coloring quickly returned to the normality of violet as Quinn slid from her stool and started heading towards the door.

"Come in."

The rather neutral sound of her voice currently being held until she knew just who was knocking. The greenhouse door opened quickly enough for the silhouette of her daughter Kallie to dash inside and latch the door securely once more. The little girl turned around to see a smile spread across the face of her mother.

"Hello, darling. Finished with lunch and your walk with Lester already?"

Kallie rushed forward to give her mother a hug. Quinn's arms spread open to welcome her daughter in to the embrace.

"Aaaalll done! Ready to help the flowers."

The enhanced progression of both her daughter's vocabulary as well as her understanding of basic gardening and appreciation of the plants was a very pleasing addition to the time Quinn spent with her. Anjolie took her daughter by the hand and escorted her into the first half of the greenhouse. Some of the plants in the back had a tendency to be less child friendly and Kallie knew as such.

"Very well, my dear. I shall get you a watering can and we'll work on tending to the flowers. Agreed?"

An emphatic nod was a sure reply. Anjolie released Kallie's hand, keeping an eye on her for good measure as she sauntered off to the right hand side of the aisles to fetch a bright purple, plastic watering can with pink heart imprints and fill it with a much needed drink. The garden hose was dropped into the container as it was filled 3/4 the way with cool water. Kallie still needed work in the no-spill area of her studies and Quinn wasn't sure Elizabeth would accept another dress spattered in mud stains.

"Now... we need to start with the Hyacinths and Hydrangeas. Which ones are those?"

The flashcard-esque training seemed to be sinking into the child's mind as she very carefully tip-toed around the aisles to lead them both to where the plants made their homes. Upon their arrival Anjolie gave a very proud smile of approval. The watering can was lowered down to her daughter; Kallie's anxious hands taking hold of the watering can and getting to business.

"Hyacinthus orientalis... often associated with rebirth. The white one is a Roman hyacinth from the mediterranean that I am growing for a friend of mine."

Kallie grinned broadly at the description as she delivered the trickling streams of cool water to the variations of pink, blue, yellow, and white. Anjolie waited for her to finish to lead them down the line about three feet to where the hydrangeas were.

"This one is Hydrangea macrophylla. The blue coloring and patterns in this one here comes from high acid levels in the soil."

Anjolie reached out her hand to touch the petals lovingly and Kallie looked at her mother with a beaming smile. The water was given to this plant in turn as their lesson continued on. Whether or not the child truly understood what her mother was saying didn't matter. Kallie was happy and Quinn was shedding her loneliness.
"Even some stories that seem to have been going for ages must eventually come to an end."

With good intentions he built the greenhouse this past Christmas as his gift to Quinn. It started out innocently enough. Trips to the city to stock up on supplies, seeds and everything else under the sun. Over time he watched small building fill with pots of all sizes and watched the progression of the plants. Cory was continuously amazed at Quinn's enthusiasm, knowledge and love for botany. Yet, in recent days he noticed a behaviour unlike what he'd seen before. Late nights grew later and a modest padlock was replaced with a more advanced security system. This he couldn't understand. Some expensive equipment was inside, but it wouldn't bankrupt them for it to be stolen.

His concern was elevated one night when he awoke in early hours of the morning to feel the space beside him cold. Braving the slight chill to the air he stirred from the blankets and stepped quietly through the halls. Passing a window he caught sight of the greenhouse door swing open and none other than Quinn saunter out. On his way back to thier bedroom he took tabs from the grandfather clock announcing the time with it's chime. The next morning he never had the opportunity to privately speak with her about what he witnessed.

It was later in the week, after learning from a likewise concerned Azjah that Quinn had a deep conversation with Moyrloch. Some of the details he knew about, others shocked and worried him to the core. When he finally managed to pin her down in one place it was of course in the greenhouse.
"I took your guilt and placed it into me..."

"Quinn!" Having spent the last fifteen minutes wandering the house, opening doors at random Elizabeth took pity and directed Cory's efforts outside. Through the back door he went, down the small set of steps leading off the back porch. It was the middle of winter and it felt as though it would snow at a moments notice.

The sudden noise startled the femme as the blue was sucked from her eyes and replaced with the normal coloring of violet. Anjolie let out a sigh and set down her paperwork, securing the drawers of her cabinet before making an attempt to direct his attentions further."I'm in here, dear. The door is unlocked."

"What the hell could she possibly workin on in the dead of winter? What grows in winter?" He thought to himself as he opened.the door and poked his head in. "Wha'cha doin' out 'ere? It's freezin'."

"Hurry up and close the door. I hate to lose the heat!" The nearly tropical setting of the greenhouse humidity and heating levels dependent entirely on the systems she had installed by a variety of companies.

It was amazing how he compressed his body through the small amount of space he provided himself then slid the door shut. That's went it felt the drastic variation form outside those walls. "Sorr'a.. bu' wha're ya doin' out here so late?"

"Just getting a head start on some of the things I was planning to do tomorrow. Besides, I didn't really know you were coming over." Initialling a square on the chart to signify the droplets had been given. Anjolie slid down from her stool, tucked the paperwork into the nearby shelving system, and turned to face Cory with a smile. "What's up, dearie?"

While her back was to him Cory went about inspecting the various plants. A watchful eye studying her from the corner of his vision. He reached out to cradle a small plant bud in his hand and craning forward to smell it. "Do I need to send an invite to spend time wit' the woman I love?"

"Of course not, dearie. Jus' don't except her to be so easily found if you don't." A broader smile and step forward in hopes of luring him away from the plants. Granted, it was nothing like trying to sniff some of the hybrids towards the back of the room, but she wasn't going to take any chances. "So... haven't seen much of you lately. Have you been busy?"

"It's no' me the one tha's busy.." He twisted his head to catch her with a look.

The near desperate look in her eyes warranted a more aggressive plan. A hand reached out for him to pull him close as Anjolie put on the most attractive face she could muster. "I know I have been. It'll pay off come late spring and through the summer. I can assure you of that." A pleasant smile spreading sweetly across her face. "Besides, it keeps me occupied when you're away."

"Tha's nice 'n all, but it ain't like I go away fo' weeks on end. I know ya may not like the fact I re-joined the League, but it ain't tha' bad really. There's only one night a week I'm really busy." No matter how high she turned on the heat Cory's icy exterior wasn't melting.

The response caused Anjolie to drop the act and release her grip. She turned to set the nightime settings on the humidity and heating controls. "I don't mind that you re-joined the league at all."

"Ya sure 'bout tha'? I been watchin' ya these past coupl'a weks. You definately seem to be a bit upset or, 'diff'rent' to say the least." He trailed a hand underneath the petals of a larger plant near the ground. A small spider shifted at the feeling of his fingers along its home. The little keepers were welcomed to keep some of the more dangerous insects at bay as long as they didn't reproduce too rapidly.

"Sorry?" Anjolie turned to cast him a rather odd look. Even though the hobbies of her private life had changed slightly she didn't seem to understand this change he spoke of.

He was trying to bite his tongue over the information he'd been given from Mrs. Caer and her "associate". Two days was all it needed to boil over. "Why is ya can talk to otha's jus' fine.. bu' when it really matters tha' I also know how ya feelin'?"

Lips were bitten slightly as she huffed at this continuation of upsetting statements. "Did you actually come here to spend time with the "woman you love" or perform your own version of the Inquisition?" The pause taken was ever so slight. "Is there something you want to ask me or am I on trial for something?"

"Yah, there's somthin' I'd like to ask." Having seen enough of the plants on that shelf he turned to face Quinn sqaurely. No beating around the bush. "Do ya have some kind of fear 'bout comin' to talk to me?"

The bluntness of the comment was true enough to strike the nail on the head and cause a flush to rise in Anjolie's cheeks. The femme looked down at the gravel floor on the greenhouse before finding the courage to raise her head, set both violet peepers on Cory, and answer the question. "About some things... yes. Some things don't strike me as proper to ask. But other than those fair and few exceptions, no."

"Some thin's.. Those thin's bein ya emotions and ya state of mind? Those are jus' as important to ya as they are to me. Yet tryin' to get those outta ya is like pullin' teeth. Bu' ya'd rather talk 'bout it to Moyr 'stead o' me?"

After the name was laid out on the table Quinn had a pretty good idea of what was said. That Moyr would approach Cory about it seemed altogether offensive, but she would have to deal with that later. "Moyr is a seperate party...if I said something to him about commitment and what I want out of life he can't label me as nagging him. He can write it off as talking about how things are going." The edges of her eyes were getting somewhat moist with the emotion building up. "Besides... it's not like I don't try to tell you. It might be subtle and I might've said it a long time ago, but I do try to say these things. When was the last time you told me what you wanted?"

"Moyr is a seperate party.." He snorted, not liking the way that sounded in the least. "It wasn't Moyr tha' came tol' me 'bout this." Not trusting the wooden structure to support the addition of his weight in a lean he straighened and tucked his hands away into his pockets. "I tol'ja no mo'n a month ago exactly wha' I wanted. Those feelin's ain't changed, 'n they ain't gunna."

"Who did come to you about this?" Nearly ignoring the rest of the comment for the moment. Quinn wanted to get her facts straight before leaping into another part of this dual assault they had going.

"Lucien."

"Who? I've never even heard of someone name--" Both eyes narrowed as the features on her face tightened as she took a step forward. "...have you been spying on me?"

His brow lowered into a scowl at the question. "No' at all, Anjolie. This was done on his own accord. No one gave him orders... his concerned associate was the one who came to me.

"Fine..." The utter sharpness of the word nearly an accusation on its own. ".. keep your little informants secret. The point is that we both claim to love each other. You obviously now have the upper hand in knowing exactly how I feel about things and what I am looking for. If you wanted the same thing I sincerely doubt you would not have burst in here upset about me talking to other people about my feelings. Is that a safe assumption?"

"Had I known I would'a come to ya earlier." Somehow, by some miraculous event she'd managed to turn the tides against him. "Wha' upset me is some otha' things ya told him tha' i ain't nev'ah heard 'fore."

"Like what?" Trying desperately to keep herself from shrieking at him as the exchange continued. Anjolie's hands were fixed on each hip as she stared him down.

"Like the fact ya tired of goin' out night aft'a night." Which he could understand wholeheartedly. "Had ya tol'me ya would known tha' I'm the same way. This trip through the League is my las', I have a plan fo' all this once it's done."

"Allow me to explain something to you...." Shifting her weight with a quick sigh. Quinn looked down at the ground to gather her thoughts before bringing both hands up to illustrate the point she intended to teach him this evening. "Whenever you're nearing the 30 year mark, are unmarried, have a child, and spend your nights out having hurricanes at the local dueling centers and hanging out with your boyfriend who just so happens to be the father of your child.... you really can't help getting a little pessimistic after a drink or two and start spilling your problems to a nearby friend who genuinely cares about the state of your life. So... pardon me for not having many female friends to speak with other than Elizabeth and for not wanting to be pictured as the nagging woman who wants to tie you down in the chains of commitment, but I do try to be a better woman than that. Even though you probably can't see it right this second. Ka-PEESH?" Chest heaving as she vented the emotions. It was he, after all, who had asked her to share.

Yes he had, and is was evident by his silence. In all it was better they were getting this off their chest. Maybe things would be more comfortable had Cory gone about wording his comments better."Wha' concerned me the most is ya unwillinness to talk with me about these things? Ya see 'ow difficult and uncomfortable this is?"

The open-hearted conversation seemed not to be keeping her from spilling forth even more frustration and such. "God forbid I would talk to you about all this and not just have the idea pop up in your head. Because God forbid I wouldn't continue to live OUT THE REST OF MY LIFE AS THE WOMAN YOU MADE YOU BREAK ONYX'S HEART IN THE EYES OF EVERY OTHER SORRY SON OF A BITCH AT THOSE ARENAS EXCEPT FOR ******* MOYR WHO IS THE ONLY GOD DAMNED PERSON THAT APPEARS TO STILL BE ON MY SIDE!!!"

There's where things went sour." I'M NOT ON YOUR SIDE?! AFTER ALL THAT IS SAID AND DONE DO YOU NOT SEE ME STANDING HERE?!"He gnashed his teeth in an effort to cease the heated exchange. Nothing positive would come from yelling each others head off. There was a long pause, he threatened to boil over even as he lowered the decibles in his voice. "I've done everythin' I could possibly imagine to have you be a part of me. A part of my life as much as I want to be a part of yours."

The release of energy in the previous transaction left Quinn on a lower volume level as well. It was probably for the best. "It's not that I didn't think you were... more like I wasn't sure that you were. I just... got upset. I wanted the next step bad enough that it bothered me. Does that make any sense?"

His heart pounded in his chest from the fow of adrenaline. Visiblly shaking he lowered a hand to the nearest surface for stability. "I guess I can guess why ya would'na trust me aft'a wha' I did to ya.. I'm sorr'a. Earnestly, 'onest to God, Anjolie. I'm sorr'a."

The defeated look on her face was enough to turn the shade of both eyes to gray. The femme sighed and wrapped both arms around her chest. "I believe you... but it doesn't stop what some people say from hurting. You know I love you and I try... I sincerely try to trust you. I just saw a part of my life that I wanted to change and I was beginning to wonder if you wanted it to. I never meant for you to find out from some random party."

"It's frustrain' when ya hear people talkin' about ya on a subject they know nothin' about. I know tha'.. ya jus' hav'ta try ya bes' 'n put it outta ya mind. They're only being childish 'n ya above tha'. Ya above them, Quinn." He edged closer to her. His hands grasping hold of Quinn's arms as she clung to herself. "I'm jus' askin' ya to be patient, dear. I had a idea workin' 'round in my head t'day."

The color in her eyes lifted and most of her muscles relaxed at the touching. Anjolie inched closer to him after both arms dropped slowly down to her sides, his hands still holding them. "I understand. You men are so hard to read sometimes. Not always so easy to see what you're planning."

"Jus' be patient, have faith 'til the end of this season. Please." Brown eyes stared down, pleadingly. He watched the color change take place in her eyes. One hand sent up to brush along her jaw.

Anjolie took another step forward to press herself very lightly against his body and let her head tilt to rest upon his chest. "I'm sorry..." The moisture from a tear could be felt wetting the material of t-shirt as Quinn brought both arms up to cling to his shoulders and torso.

"C'mon, le's get t'bed. One more day behind his one more day closer to what we want." He held her tenderly, that hand sent to stroke through her hair. Anjolie followed along with him happily, flipping on the nightime security system and locking the door as they left the greenhouse and headed back to the Ranch home for a good night's sleep.
"I took your guilt and placed it into me..."

The shadows is a good place to linger, just out of human sight.

The woman had been a friend of the Marchioness, and was clearly unhappy with things in her life, and if it would help resolve the unspoken problem, he had no compunction about sharing what he'd heard with the man who sat drinking scotch with her that night.

Now the question was, would he use his new knowledge effectively?
